1. I too use rubber rings (Grolsch bottle tops) and I think they are as reliable as anything. I've not had an accident in 15yrs of use.
2. I agree - it always looks overpriced for such a flimsy effort
3.
Sound clips?
I have no clips of me and YouTube has one video which is a bit rubbish and takes 1.38 for the guy to even start playing
4. I think it can be down to habit, it can be down to friendships, it can be convieniant, it can be a number of reasons. My last band had a pretty woeful second guitarist but he was great as he did what he was told, was a great platform to underpin solos and as importantly, he always showed up on time with money for rehearsal. I'd rather work with a steady musician who was a good laugh and reliable than a virtuso primadonna. However I don't like people who can't play in time. Poor gear is never an issue and stuff can always be bought once the band is earning.
5. I've lost count of the number of gigs I've done to a handful of people with poor PA and cramped up in the corner. The reality is that you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Work out what went wrong, what can be done differently to ensure it doesn't happen again and then move on. I live for the bigger better gigs but I've learnt to enjoy the less exciting ones too. In terms of people coming, a lot of "promoters" are really just bookers and it comes down to bands to promote. In terms of your tone, this is something that comes with experience and you can always tweak an amp slightly between songs. Sounds like you worked out the earplugs weren't helping on this occasion and rectified that soon enough. Things will get better I'm sure
6. Any classic bass fitted with Rotosound TruBass strings. They are like double bass strings for an electric bass. I have some on a P-bass and have had several comments about them (even someone coming in from the other room as they thought it was a double bass).
7.
I think the latest issue of Bass Player has a review of the 1x12.
It does indeed. I'd not heard of them but there have been a few threads recently. I'm certainly interested in trying one
8. Me too, just first time I log in, not going from page to page. No big deal though as if I click the link again I get in on a second attempt.
9. I must have missed all discussions on Basschat regarding this guy (!?!) but I've been a fan of his listings for years.... purely as a spectator sport of course
10. I've said it before but once the feedback slips below 99.0% I always avoid. The reluctance to answer questions is bizarre, in part because it is the seller's option as to whether answers go online. Bizarre
11. I used one at a recent gig where my amp blew a fuse & it was awesome. I hadn't any opininions before but really liked the tone. Don't know what it was but it had a 4x10 cab and took no time for me to dial in a great tone
12. We sometimes go for a meal as a band, just don't fill up too much & it's no issue
13. That's a hell of a price drop for 6wks of ownership! Somebody will get a real bargain here!
14. I use both techniques & try not to get too hung up on how other players play bass. I can name great players who use both techniques. It will always be hotly debated though
15. I used one from that era on some recordings about 10yrs ago and at the time I was blown away with how good it was. Someone ought to do well here
16. I like to use powerball to get my hand stronger, recommended to me on these very pages
17. Out of interest what the hell did you type in the search engine to find that?
18. In an update (that possibly should have just been a PM to NiceGuyHomer! ) I thought I'd share my thoughts on this. First up as a sideline Absolute Music haven't impressed me. I received generic emails stating I'd get contact on dispatch which I didn't. Not professional and not good service. As a plus it arrived within one working day (most online firms offer this) but the tolex at the back is slightly scuffed and the end pins to the kettle lead were bent and broken. Surely a very basic inspection prior to dispatch is not too unreasonable to expect? I have emailed them and I'll see what they have to say. In terms of the amp. Fancy packaging. Even the tape around the box was customised with an Orange logo. Inside the card box was a very colourful box that immediately made me feel like I was somehow buying into a lifestyle. In a positive way. The size of the combo is fair, bigger than a practice amp but half size of a small gigging combo. The tolex is thin and slightly badly finished at the back in places. From any kind of distance it looks stunning though. A very manageable weight and striking looks. The controls are what you would expect with Orange and I like these. I did momentarily get confused with how to plug it in and did have a muppet moment of wondering why I had no signal plugging a 51RI into the headphone socket! D'Oh! Tonally it's a good sound. The correlation between the gain and the master volume isn't like with a tube amp (second muppet mistake and I was well aware this was solid state) so you can crank it very loudly without colouring the tone too much. I like this as I plan to put the double bass through it. I played around with both the volume and the tone controls and was able to get a fair range of tones that were pleasing. The 12" speaker feels solid. The tuner is cool and the lights look funky if you leave them on. My overall feeling is that it will be useful for small acoustic jams, a light bit of home use and even use with light drum accompaniment at a VERY intimate gig. Not the most well built on close inspection but certainly on an acoustic stage it allows you to buy into a retro chic without blowing the budget. I'm pleased with it.
19. I don't know the Zoom product everyone is raving about is but I was going to put my vote on the Boss Micro BR which again is also easy to use
20. Welcome - I love it when I find out just how Global this site actually is.
21. the Boss one for me and it seems also standard issue with a lot of musicians that I work with
22. My playing certainly woke up when I started lessons and I'm never afraid to go back when I'm in a rut. Good luck with it
23. Just to revive this older thread I found this Ed Friedland video that I thought I'd share. If he'd have "Bass" in the title I'd have found it a lot sooner!
24.
And on that brighter note - I JUST GOT A JOB!! Only part time hours atr the local Odeon cinema but it's a start, and I'm made up about it! Yays!
Nice one. My family has been affected by redundancy too this year and we're bouncing back now. All the best
25. I would always point people in the way of something like a precision or a jazz as they cross genres / styles and are classic. I too rate the Squier range but there is some really good advice on this thread. Try as many as you can and pick what feels good for you As a personal view, if you are a guitarist and looking for a recording bass I would give Danelectro a bit of serious thought. The short scale basses are good for guitarists who are just dipping in for a bit of home recording.
