[attachment=146231:pup.jpg] I appreciate this may sound like a real newbie question but I've recently upgraded my old upright bass and subsequently taken the Shadow pickup off the bridge of my old bass to put it on the new bass. It was a tight fit on the original bridge but I'm having the opposite problem with my new bass and the pads simply slide out of the gaps in the bridge. Where am I going wrong? I figure I can't be the first person to have this problem so looking for tips / advice. They really are quite loose and just fall out. I don't want to buy a new pickup and it was an aftermarket pickup so it's not like it should fit the old bass and not the new one.

Has he washed it?

If you prefer flats to rounds (& forgive me there isn't a lot to go on in terms of likes) then something like a Quarter Pounder is much more modern and high output. You may prefer a more traditional sound like Seymour Duncans SPB-1 which gives that classic tone. Changing the pickup can take the bass in a number of directions so any decision really comes down to what you are hoping to achieve. Fixing a problem with strings may mean something better quality but less dramatic is required. if you wanted more oomph then I'd be looking an SPB-3. The second hand market is good for pickups as they don't really hold their value and the Antiquity range by Seymour Duncan are expensive but eBay bargains can be had. Equally I've tried and used nice alternatives by Wizard (recently stopped making them but still around 2nd hand), Kent Armstrong (not quite as good but cheaper) and Dimarzio. It's really just a case of knowing what types of sound you are looking for.

I have a pine tele that has been running for years with no issues. I was going to mod mine but it turns out the only changes needed were cosmetic - I got the Bassdoc to do a white pickguard, added ashtrays and a thumb rest. Oh & strung it with flats. The pickup was a certainty to go UNTIL I actually got the bass and plugged it in! Those Duncan designed pickups are amazing - saved me a fortune! I think there is a market for most things so in principle it would work. You would just need to tap into the right market. It comes down to whether you'd be playing for money or fun. I was with Musicguard for years until I heard bad things about them being difficult paying out - I phoned them to query it as I don't have receipts and they said I'd need valuations on everything.... I had a recommendation for Newmoon insurance and phoned them. They worked out more than 50% cheaper and were cool with photographs of the instruments with online quotes. I can't see me claiming but I want to know that if the worst does happen I'm not paying out for nothing. Sound advice about small print here and especially for those reliant on home insurance.

I'm pretty much with Dingus here. I don't align myself with one or the other and take it on a bass by bass basis

I echo the sentiments about how you play when it is stripped back - it sounds terrible when bands play the same way as you should be really dialing everything right back. Personally I've used an upright bass, I've plugged a P-bass in though a PA and I've used an acoustic bass guitar. I don't think there really is a right answer in kit used, more the way you approach the songs
