I'm kind of torn between being skeptical to the point of dismissal, and intrigued to the point of "at that price it might be worth giving them a try". Any experience and/or opinions? Cheers.
  2. Also, don't trust staff in music shops, make sure for yourself. I've had experiences where ill-informed staff have tried to tell me that there's no difference, or that the instrument cable they're trying to sell me is a speaker cable. Considering that, in the most extreme situations, you can end up burning your house down and everyone in it, it's not a matter on which to trust a piano playing salesman, who may have never used an amp in his life.
  3. We start the first set with "Dreaming of You" - The Coral. This means I get to start and have my four seconds of glory. Second set starts with "Whistle for the Choir" - The Fratellis. This means I'm free to sort out my drink, have a good scratch and hoist up my trousers while all the adoring girls make eyes at the guitarist/singer.
  4. A 2004 American Standard should also, I believe, have "Fender" molded into the neck plate on the back. This could, of course, have been replaced at some time, for some strange reason, but combined with the lack of glossy finish, the lack of string-through holes and the truss rod adjustment being at the wrong end of the neck, I'd struggle to believe this was an American Standard. Edit: To further complicate matters, further research seems to indicate that there was no 2004 American Standard. They became the American Series, with the addition of the S-1 switch, in 2004. The American Standard was only reintroduced in 2008. All in all it's looking like the best thing to do is, KiOgon said, ask for the serial number.

I think they're around that price new, and that's with the graphite reinforced neck, some upgraded electrics and a badass II bridge. I paid around £350 for mine some years ago, but having said that, I wouldn't part with it for £700+. I hear talk that they can be a bit "hit and miss", but if you get a good one they're very, very nice, in my opinion. I have a couple of american G&Ls and a Lakland, and they sit at home sulking while me and the HW1 are out having fun. I used to have an American Standard, and for my money, my HW1 is every bit as good, if anything I love it more. That one looks very nice with all the added extras, but without playing it, I wouldn't personally fork out over £700 for it.

Before that they had the spaghetti logo, after that they had the 70s style and graphite reinforced necks.
  8. When I started it was playing along to early ACDC (Bon Scott period), early ZZ Top (pre Eliminator) and Green Onions- Duck Dunn again. All really easy to remember, but tightened up my timing and consistency and felt like I was playing something, rather than practicing. Moved on to Tommy Shannon (Stevie Ray Vaughan) when I was ready for a few more notes and some variation in feel. Also,personally, I'd not worry about tabs etc. Most basslines you don't really need them and working it out yourself will train your ear to what the intervals sound like.

  10. I have TI JF344s on the El Capitan; they sound and feel lovely..but then again, I have flats on almost everything. I started putting some La Bella 760FMs (49-104) on once, but by the time the A string was on I started getting nervous and bottled out. It's probably totally illogical, but I started having nightmares about pulling the bridge off. The FMs ended up on a G&L SB-2 that has a neck that looks (and feels) like it could take the cables from the Humber Bridge.

Personally I learned alot about bass in this style of music from Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill's left hand on the clavinet, and as someone who occasionally dabbles in a bit of bouzouki, I could listen to Donal Lunny all day.   13. Same here, reluctantly sold my Big One and LM mark III rig to Neil in Jan. The one consolation is that it went to such a good home. Smooth, no hassle transaction, met half way between us and had a good chat. Top bloke to do business with and top bloke to chat with too. I'm pleased to see he found a buyer for his Hartke too, nice one mate.
  14. With great reluctance I'm looking to sell the best rig I've ever owned, but really can't justify keeping right now. Likewise the Markbass Little Mark III is well documented, but official info is here...... The amp has, from day one, been kept in a very nice Gigskinz bag that could have been made for it and which is included in the price. I'm not in a position to take trades I'm afraid, if I wasn;t desperate for the cash I'd never part with either of these. Looking for £450 for the cab and £400 for the amp, or £800 for the pair....which I can assure is a very nice, lightweight yet heavy sounding rig. To illustrate how perfect this rig is for a gigging bass player; I can place the bass case and the amp bag on top of the cab and trundle along on the rear wheels pretty much one handed. My entire rig in one trip, without a next day visit to the chiropractor, all without having to make any compromise in sound. Collection is welcome (Louth in Lincolnshire) or if you take both and aren't in either Cornwall or Scotland I could possibly deliver. Even if an extreme distance I could possibly arrange to meet half way. Failing all that I'd expect shipping to be £20-30 ...or there abouts.   15. For sale: Markbass Little Mark III. Has served me well for a year or so but I haven't really needed it much of late and to be honest could use the money more at the moment. It's been well looked after and is still in "as new" condition, No knocks, scuffs or scratches anywhere, and has never let me down. I'm sure I don't need to go into any great length about what fantastic little amps these are ...... in size that is...they're anything but little in sound. If I can find my camera I will post pics later. Looking for £450 for it, shipping included. Or collection from Louth in Lincolnshire is welcomed, in which case the price will be more like £430.   18. With great reluctance I find myself having to part with my beloved Sunburst Bob. I bought this last year from Jase and he'd looked after it well...hardly used it. Since then I've gigged it two or three times and it's still in pristine condition. But times being how they are something has to go, and for what our band is doing now this is unfortunately getting the least amount of playing. I comes with a Hiscox case and currently has La Bella Deep Talkin' 760FM strings on (49-69-89-109) with which it gives a lovely old sound. If preferred I can switch these for either Ernie Ball Roundwound Regular Slinky (50-70-85-105) or Roundwound Super Slinky (45-65-80-100) ...a couple fo unopened sets I have kicking about. Or I can leave the flats on and throw in one of the round sets....your choice. I really am sad to part with this as it both plays and sounds fantastic...the neck is a thing of great beauty. I'm looking for £550 for it, inclusive of shipping costs. Collection is also welcome (I'm in Louth, Lincolnshire) but I'm unable to deliver or meet half way at present due to the car being off the road. For collection it'll be £20 cheaper.   19. Selling my two Aguilar DB112s I bought earlier this year from the Bass Merchant in Colchester. These are the tweed ones which they had to ship over from the US. One of them has the tweeter. They've been gigged twice and practiced through three times, and are in immaculate condition. Also included are the RoqSolid covers I bought for them. Sound lovely, but I also bought one of Mr. Claber's Big Ones this year and can't justify keeping everything. I payed something like £720 for the pair if I recall ....I'd be happy to get back £500 for them if anyone's interested. I'm sure anyone interested knows what they look like, but when I've figured out this bloody camera I'll add pics to confirm condition etc. SOLD Thanks for all the interest.
  20. So, last night was the first proper gig with the Big One. I'd used it a couple of times in rehearsal, but due to volume restrictions and the abysmal acoustics in the old village hall we practice in, I hadn't been able to get an accurate idea of how it performed. Suffice to say that by the end of the night I was one exceptionally happy bunny (and not just due to the jiggly lass in the lycra devil costume dancing at the front). Firstly a word on the weight. Alex had mentioned how much (or how little) the current incarnation weighs in a PM, but I'd sort of read it and thought "oh that's good" without really taking in what it meant in real terms. Honestly, when I first unpacked it I thought for a minute that he'd screwed up and sent me an unloaded cab. It's unbelievably light.....worryingly light until you hear it. Both the placement of the handles, and the handles themselves are perfect for making it manageable ....even though it's light it's not small and poorly thought out ergonomics could easily have cancelled out the benefits of the low weight. I said it's not small, but it seems alot narrower than most of the cabs I've had in the past, although I've not measured it...perhaps the excellent weight and ergonomics make it deceptive. I certainly didn't experience the usual knuckle skinning on the door frame of the pub we played at. Chest height with the side handles, lengthways in front of you with the top handle and one of the side handles, above chest height to clear pool tables etc, or even trundled along behind you on the wheels with amp etc piled on top.....the design and weight give you numerous options and make this by far the most gig-friendly cab I've ever owned. Of course all that is nice, but ultimately meaningless if it sounds sh*te. That's not an issue with the Big One though. I actually felt my trousers flapping for the first time since I ditched my old Ampeg B25B 2x15 cab years ago (christened "The Bastard" by band-mates who would avoid helping to move it like the plague). I'm not particularly well versed in all the standard phrases used to describe sounds, nor can I listen to a sound and analyse all the frequencies and how much of each etc......what I do know is that this thing sounds HUGE. I was using a Lakland 44-01 through a Little Mark III, EQ all flat on the amp, VLE at 9 0'clock-ish...maybe a bit more, and the VPF around 8ish. On the bass I had the treble cut a little and a very slight boost on the bass end. It sounded great to me, but of course that doesn't always mean alot, so afterwards I spoke to a mate who comes to see us play regularly. He said it was the first time since I stopped using "The Bastard" that he'd really felt my sound hit him in the chest, but without being oppressive or overwhelming. He said it just seemed to be everywhere, very warm, very smooth, and very, very big. The only negative comment he had was that the vibrations in his bar-stool gave him, what he called, "a lovely, special feeling" until he remembered it was me doing that to him and then he felt rather dirty. I'm afraid he's going to have to get used to feeling dirty, since I'm going to be using this cab for a very, very long time. This may not have been the most technically eloquent of reviews, more based on general perceptions both on stage and out the front, to me that's what matters....and besides, you know how when you're really happy with something and you've just got to tell some one who'll understand......? I'm so happy to have joined the ranks of the ever-growing list of satisfied Barefaced customers. P.S. have to dig out the camera now to stick the pair of Aguilar DB112s up for sale.....and they were so pretty, all in tweed.
