School boy errors at gigs - my worst was last night
lurksalot replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Worst I do, and I do it every time, is mixing up the input and output up on my Zoom pedal. Obviously this results in no sound Thankfully the 'problem' is fully resolved by the time I've actually got to play...........

Ah now then Rich, I can help you here. What I do is look closely at the pedal to see where it says OUT. I plug the amp into this one. Then cunningly, using the principle of elimination, I calculate that the other one must surely be IN. I plug the bass into this one. Never fails! ...........
Ah yes, but 'my' Zoom pedal also has a 'control' input/output socket which will eventually incur a fail if accounted for as above -
I had piano lessons as a kid and really didn't get the stuff I was being taught and packed in, bought a epi SG copy from a 2nd hand shop(only cos it was £12 I had no idea what Gibson or SG was ) and messed with that , obtained a proper vox organ and vox head and crappy speaker from a cousin and had some great fun pretending to write and perform . The next door neighbour could hear the racket and said that her son who had left home had a guitar he did.t use , did I want it for £20 , I said yes , and took it . I was a bit surprised to find it had only 4 strings and a neck that was separated from the body . I screwed the neck on with acouple of woodscrews and I was a bass man , I did'nt realise it was an original 60's Hohner violin until a lot later after I flogged it on , but it led me to proper performing as I was the only person in school with a bass , so I was in every show, at every assembly, and even dragged to church on occassion , It was quite a novelty at the time and kind of baptism of fire .
Wasn't there one of those in Pentangle?
That Is obtuse , the triangle corner issue however is acute .
Bass. Then triangle. Came back to bass when it became apparent the triangle circle was just too cliquey. Want five different answers? Ask three triange players! All they would talk about is, is this good for metal? For f***'s sake.
I always found triangle players a bit square to be honest

how does 'educated' fit for those who are just contradictory , I know a few people who would like X but because ( insert name, relative, enemy etc here ) like X ,they will declare a preference for Y .

Auditions - why are some musicians so damned rude to others?
lurksalot replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
I am a lucky [s]tw4t [/s] individual who has 'auditioned' twice and got the gig also . however , I run a business that inevitably involves selling , and an audition is no more than selling what you have to offer , sometimes it isn't the best technique on offer , it may be the attitude or the craic that will get the gig. How many times have you asked a professional to come and offer advice at your house , kitchens, landscapes, drives or even double glazing and NOT given feedback to the losers ?? same meat, different gravy perhaps , but that is real life to some. I suppose band stuff is real life to some also, ( where is the jealousy icon when you need one) but it might lack the importance of the note perfect rehearsal technique that a group of jammers might expect, hell . someone who can actually play the stuff they asked for might even be a bit intimidating -
Barney Miller theme.
Doh , this has made a liar out of me on another thread , I had totally forgotten about this , but was a BIG influence on my early learning , a great riff , although I did seem to recall the bassline being left to play on its own for a while with less interference from everything else

best investment I made was a little gas solder gun like these http://pro-iroda.com/pro50.htm they seem to work better and easier than plug in models for me .

The more you tinker with it the more you will get out of it , I find it surprisingly versatile especially when you start to get a feel for the effects that you can dial in. I have been using it for a few years now and would be a bit lost without it. I play it straight through into an amp (with DI coming out of the pedal if needed ) , don't often use 'phones so concentrate on the sound through the cabs .

I watched with interest one of the fundraising shows , Children in need or such , when Jesse J sang Price tag ....... 'we don't want your money ,money ,money ....' I thought that an interesting concept in trying to get peoples money

Good afternoon - blues bass is alive and well in Edinburgh

from a relative newbie myself , dive in , looks like you have some tales to tell with a kit list like that , so don' be afraid to chirp up when the oportunity arises -
If you got 40 in then that is a decent start for a new venue..I hope this encourages this LL and venue to keep this up...and good attendance can't always be there straight away. If you think the venue needs support ..and you'll get more gigs from that as well..then I'd go out and see if I could help promote it in some small way. I always try and post on our website and FB detailing the recent gigs..even though you can't and probably shouldn't slag off many places if you intend to go back there... so you have to be 'positive' and not so much, objective. ...... Play the game.
We hope to take some more as well next time , and we do the FB stuff best we can, We always provide posters ,plenty of B/W A4 and a couple of A3 of us on a festival stage, always big up the pubs when we can , a bit of mutual promotion never hurts

If youv'e got little hands ,it might be easier to play the lower stuff with having to strestch your fingers across the neck , and if you haven't been taught you often find a way that suits your own limitations

The Railway Inn , Coed Talon Pretty quiet really as the landlady has just started putting bands on , there were only about 40 in, but they rocked the place , it turned out to be a brilliant intimate kind of gig and got to re-book in 8 weeks . the room pulled the tone right out of the gear and any bass effects were pretty much lost . My sound varied from a deep boomy thud, to a less deep non boomy thud Guitars seemed to cut through OK , and in general a good night out ed for spelig

Depressing things your bandmates say.
lurksalot replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Interesting Ideas , but does it actually mean anything in the real world ? I understand that everyone in the band has to have a sense of timing and rhythm but it kind of goes out of the window ,cos you do have to make an effort to play to the drummer , he may not be responsible , but he won't look to anyone else for reassurance, it is all a bit of a jazzy trainwreck if everyone played to the agreed time signature except the drummer . Ebbs and flows in tempos really can add a lot, preferably when the ebbs are not done on someone elses flows , or maybe ..... -
One song that troubles me that we do ( very well ,as it happens ) is Poisons , Every Rose has its Thorn ...... I have to say that having recently done some research, I have planted a Zephrine Drouhin and can categorically state that it is a climbing rose which has no thorns I am worried that one day our fans will see right through us , should we put a disclaimer at the start of the set stating that the opinions of the songwriters do not necessarily reflect the the views of the band Having said that, I really think that they SHOULD fear the reaper

I think that monitering and sound quality is important on stage , but so is body language, a couple of glances , eye contact, nods , raised and dropped necks , laughs and even walking across a stage , helps to bind a performance. It is sometimes not easy to identify who is wrong even when you can hear it all , and it is often a surprise to the offender , just being able to hear the racket sometimes is not enough , .......... not that is ever me of course

in a previous band and after a few comments on speed variation and fills that spill .... 'Look guys ,it is NOT the drummers responsibility to keep time ' The guy is a great dude but -
I have most often found that if the room or stage is boomy , i can roll of a bit of the low end and raise the output so that the mids cut through. every room is different and none seem to be be the sonically passive test rooms you would test your hi fi in , if you asked everyone in the room to analyse the overall sound of the band , you would get a different response from each , in the same way that if you ask every member of the band, it would be a different response from each

2 things here raise an eyebrow 1
Ah well, it seems there's lots of people on here with more ambition than cash....they ask for a deal.........I agree..........they still don't buy it! Window shoppers!
this 2. I am surprised they took it back , most second hand / pawn shops I have dealt with are sold as seen , used, and unwarrantied. caveat emptor or something like , any product is only worth to you what you are prepared to pay for it, why negotiate a price if you are not prepared to pay it then and there ?
Saw this repeated in the early hours this morning. What a rare treat! Imagine having that amount of time and creative freedom to record an album. PG totally obsessive. Really shows why a lot of contemporary recordings are not up to standard
Did I hear correctly that the track listings were not as originally intended due to the way Vinyl did not produce the bass response quite as well nearer the middle of the disc as it was effectively travelling slower and could not produce the tones with the same energy ??? That is maybe a touch anal , but incredible attention to detail

The green Spector that is a beautiful guitar I haven't really tried enough basses to dislike properly sorry !!! or even spent too much on a bass that wasn't worth it , but , I have a feeling that Fender has a snob value with some that I don't get . Sunburst doesn't do it for me either it just seems soooo dated . the 'violin' style might get knocked but its a lightweight shortscale that my 11 yo daughter loves to pick up and play .

Led zeppelin and black sabbath just dont do anything for me !
lurksalot replied to gub's topic in General Discussion
I certainly have not got any 'hate' impression from the thread, I think sometimes a question such as the OP raises is almost out of seeking some like minded reassurance . After all, you here people banging on about how wonderful some bands are , and if an individual doesn't get it , it is quite reasonable to ask if anyone else feels the same .
