superglue and bicarbonate of soda works well as a slot-filler too - careful though as it gets very hot, very quickly

Plucking Hand Muting - Technique Advice needed
Paul_C replied to ritch12's topic in Theory and Technique
as I've always moved my thumb when playing different strings, my method, as taught to me by Steve Lawson, is to mute the strings below the string I'm resting my thumb on with my thumb, so: E string - thumb on pickup/neck/ramp/thumb rest/etc. A string - thumb on E string D string - thumb on A string, muting E G string - thumb on D string, muting A and E -
The Mandobird VIII has 8 strings and therefore counts as a proper mandolin.
"For the purists! By popular demand, we've taken the amazing Epiphone innovation Mandobird and made it an 8-string." do you think they had a few annoying gits who asked the same question ?
that is absolutely amazing
though as it only has four strings, not eight, is it really a mando or more an electro uke ?
I'm really excited about this bass. The only concern I have is over the final fret dressing/leveling and setup etc. May have someone do that for me - although I really would rather not.
maybe first time round you need to pay a pro to show you how it's done

Having done many guitar headstock breaks I can say that it should be relatively easy to repair as there's a decent amount of surface exposed which will make for a strong (usually stronger than the wood was before) joint.
Hey there people, Here's the deal. A distand cousin of mine from back home got hold of an old japanese hollowbody bass which I was thinking of getting. Being free of charge just made it more attractive. however there are no pots or the pots have sunk inside the body or something rather. Has anyone got any ideas how to change the pots or will it simply involve to open the body something which i dont want to do unless it is the industry standard to open up hollowbodies in order to change pups/pots. Any magical input is highly valued. anyone have any pots that they could sell to me? Im guessing the hollobody ones on a passive bass might be 500k, depending on pickups i guess. Thanks
you have to pull the wiring out of an f-hole, or a pickup hole - then reverse the process to put it back together the easy way is to tie fine cord, or wire, to the pots and drag them through, ship in a bottle style
If the middle frets are flat, wouldn't that mean the neck was back bowed?
yes - the frets were levelled while the neck was bowed backwards, rather than straightening it out I had a defretted bass like that - the fingerboard was much thinner in the middle than at either end because whoever lined it and then levelled it did the same thing.
Thanks for your help folks. Like you say, the answers are probably elsewhere, but I find some of the explanations a bit tricky for my addled brain - this is really clear though, thanks. I know the cab's specification is pretty good but it just seems to lack bottom-end sometimes. Tis a shame I can't add another speaker - it looks like I'll either have to stick with what I've got or sell the speaker and buy a couple of 8ohms cabinets. Cheers! Steve
Two things you could try: one, experiment with placement - close to a wall (and in the corner of a room) will make a difference. two, get someone else to play through your rig and stand back and listen - quite often what sounds poor to you will turn out to be much different to those further away.
Hi there, can anyone help? I currently have an: * Ampeg SVT-6 Pro amp (with an output power rating of 1100 Watts RMS, 4 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD, and 750 Watts RMS, 8 ohm load, 120VAC, 5% THD - I copied and pasted this from the brochure) * Ampeg SVT-410 HLF speaker cabinet (4 ohms impedance). I'd like to add a bit more bottom-end welly to my sound. So, I thought about getting an Ampeg 1x15 speaker. However, the impedance on these in 8 ohms - which is different to my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF. Could I use an 8 ohms Ampeg 1x15 with my 4 ohms SVT-410 HLF speaker? Or does my choice of second speaker also have to be 4 ohms? If so, I was thinking about getting another SVT-410 HLF to make the most of my amp. Or is there a better speaker cabinet for getting some trouser-flapping rumble? Thanks for your help folks - much appreciated. Steve
the way cabs are usually wired, you'd need 2 x 8ohm cabs to replace 1 x 4ohm cab - if you run a 4 and an 8 you'll dip below 4 ohms and risk blowing things up (assuming the limit is 4ohm)

Bongo is the way to go, and having owned just about all the variations of the 4 string, HS is the sweetest sounding of them all (IMHO, of course)
Don't mind the green body. I notice that the body isn't made of basswood so should sound pretty decent. (I could be wrong about basswoodBTW as this seems to be on cheaper basses-correct me if I'm wrong ) I don't like the look of the neck or hardware tho' which imho does look cheap.
MM Bongos are made with a basswood body, as that worked best with the pickups and preamp that was developed for it.
apart from the one I built for a show ages ago which is being repainted at the moment (pics when complete)
Here it is . . . It was finished with satin and oil before, but I tried a new stain and it proved unstable, so it's now painted
probably a 35" scale or something and that combined with the string thru body stringing has made the strings too short.... though you would think the owner would buy appropriate strings.
I was about to ridicule your suggestion of 35" as it looks much shorter, but it turns out to be a std. 34" scale - no idea where why those strings are so short unless the owner thought it was short scale too.

Well I've owned a bass or two in my time too lucky for me I found one ! apart from the one I built for a show ages ago which is being repainted at the moment (pics when complete) I only have the Bongo 4HS which is plenty for me
