Just for a larf, list your favourite five bass players who impessed you when they cut their mustard in the 1970s. i.e. they were around, gigging & recording in that decade. Why the 70s? Well it's a decade that some of us BC boys 'n girls have either a memory or connection with, AND it was a decade of change. McCartney to Vicious, Mingus to Sting, Jaco to Lynott etc. No rules ...any genre, any level of success or obscurity (and especially the non-obvious). The only thing is, PLEASE keep it to only five names, and in rank order [#1 being your favourite). It will help (me) for you to state which band(s) they were with. If this thread gets popular enough, I will compile the results and 'publish' the results ...for no other reason than it will be interesting to see WHO (amongst you conoscenti of the deep) deserve a mention in despatches in the anals of an 'interesting chapter' of modern music history.
*whisper* it's spelt "annals"

Fender Precision Problems- Can't hear it!!
Paul_C replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
The irony is that over the last 10 years or so I've ALWAYS played with earplugs in order to protect my hearing!! I failed to realise that the 6 or 7 concussions I've suffered from (as well as all the other bumps and bangs; the stingers) have probably done more damage. Agree entirely that earplugs are essential for all musicians. Again, thanks for all your suggestions guys. I tried out an EBS preamp on Saturday and although it helped a bit, the sound that was produced was so far removed from that of a P Bass that it (to me) defeated the object of having a P Bass. I've got another session on Wednesday so will try out the Wizards properly. If I still get no joy, I'm going to sell my P and invest in something perhaps a bit more hifi.
Could you keep the rig as it is, but have a personal monitor setup that allows you to hear it ? So front of house is classic P, and you have a wedge shaped amp pointing at you with a more middy output ? -
Thanks for that, I noticed that Billy Uses fingers don't fret (hehe) I might start learning how to use 3 fingers, and perhaps buy one of his DVD's. I noticed that on one of his DVD's it mentions Pitch harmonics? I know this is a little out of topic, but I can do regular harmonics, how would you get Pitch harmonics?
pinch harmonics - you use the right hand only, typically the string is plucked with the thumb while the harmonic is made with the first finger - don't know how Billy does it
-
Sheehan uses three fingers to pluck the strings on fast stuff, from what I remember from the masterclass at the Bass Institute - he also recommends many exercises which he uses to improve speed and technique, not intended for playing live, BBC take note
-
I was going to keep this for myself, but I have need to fund a new bass rig, so I'll have to build another one It's not quite as brown as it looks in the pics, the third pic is closest to what it looks like under normal conditions. Oil-finished ash body, oil-finished maple neck with bird's eye maple fingerboard, Kinman 60s Tele pickups, Sperzel tuners, optional Hiscox case. P.

you could always replace the 15" speaker with an 8ohm one, then the two combined would give you 4ohms
-
The Musicman Bongo has 24 frets - many (if not all) Status basses too
-
I'll be there, along with Mike E
-
I used to get a lot of clicking on my Bongo when I played too enthusiastically - so I made a ramp to keep my playing under some control ..
The legendary Mike Dirnt from Green Day back in the times when they were the greatest. But i have always wondered what this bass he used back then is, i guess a stingray of some kind but i may be wrong. Also he got a gr8 tone around this time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEMepodnTNU...feature=related
Looks like a Gibson Grabber to me
Am I the only one who LIKE the look of them?!
I DO like the look of my Bongo, though as I said earlier, I have owned prettier basses. I've also got a Bongo humbucker around here somewhere, bought from a Bassworlder a couple of years ago - one day I'll find a home for it (I have wondered if it could be jammed between the two pickups on my HS )
Looks like I aint going to get that amazing tone then lol. Do Musicman sell the bongo pup's and the preamp as seperates? It'll be good for future reference. Musicman really need to make a bongo that looks sexier than it's tone
as a Bongo owner (4HS) I'd agree that they aren't the prettiest, perhaps - but they certainly look individual and I'm more than happy with mine how about a Stealth one ? probably the coolest looking one, though the gloss black one looks good too mine is Egyptian Smoke, which isn't a bad colour either IMHO

the new CD arrived here this morning, it's all good so far
I'm guessing not - I collect vintage Hofners and there's very little common ground that I can see. Do all those switches work? If so, what on earth do they all do?
Well I have seen mention of them being connected to Hofner as a subsidiary company, rather than a company that Hofner made instruments for - but TBH I haven't found much info at all. The bass was made in Italy, this I know from the "Made in Italy" bit on the neck plate The switches all work - the top four are pickup selection - marked Full/1/2/OFF - the bottom three feed the signal through some caps, and are marked Hi/Med/Lo
That's a very cool bass, but what is it? I've never heard of Contessa - were they an offshoot of Eko or Meazzi?
Don't know much myself, but there might have been a Hofner connection.
Have you still got the Urge I or the Kubicki Factor Paul...?
I've only got three basses now (not including the recent Contessa post, it's not actually mine), a Bongo 4HS, a Washburn AB10 acoustic and one I built myself.
-
it's been hanging around in bits for years, finally back in one piece and not as bad as you might think
-
After a bit of thought, and remembering that I have a ART TubePac preamp/comp, I'm wondering what other options might be available now
-
Is the Sansamp still the D.I. unit of choice ? I've sold my rig and fancy gigging in a minimalist way P.
-
I've got Thomastik Jazz flats on my Washburn acoustic - sounds good to me, and with some kitchen towel jammed up against the bridge it does a passable poor man's upright sound
Who was it who said " There's only two types of music: stuff I like and stuff I don't..."
That was me ! .. and it's still true If the world of recorded music is moving into a multi-tasking system (what do drummers think of all the drum software out there, that must be undermining them more than bass players ?), then those that want to keep themselves at the "cutting edge" have to consider following suit, and exploring what else can be done creatively with any instrument that comes to hand, not restricting themselves to what they can do with only one. Bass players of all flavours will continue to exist, some will be more creative than others, some will be converted guitarists who couldn't get a gig, some will find ways to be "different" and will stand or fall depending on how popular their view of how to play bass proves to be. No one will be right or wrong, and most of the world won't give a damn either way, especially if the singer is cute. P.

An almost complete vintage (late 60s) Yamaha SB2. Someone long before I owned it stripped the finish off both body and headstock - I've put a bit of primer on the latter but don't have time to finish it so I'm offering it for sale to someone who'd like a project to play with. The tuners are incomplete, so a new set would probably be needed, the same goes for the bridge, where the grub screws to raise and lower the saddles appear to have been supeglued in. The pickups/electrics are original, as is the scratchplate. The frets have been replaced, but not levelled. So it's mostly all there and wouldn't necessarily need a lot spending on it to get it playable. £50 plus shipping.
