I decided one bass was never going to be enough Only slightly heavier than the 4 according to my not-very-accurate scales (10lbs compared to 9 3/4), and almost as described by the ebay seller (his claim that there were no scratches or dings has proved to be slightly inaccurate ) Great sounding bass though, which is what really matters.

Can you put a decal onto an oiled finish?
I am tempted to oil finish my Jazz all maple neck to ge that slinky smooth fell. But I also want to put a decal on the headstock afterwards, can it be done?
you can, but it'll scratch off - if you apply more oil that'll lift it off if you're not careful the best way would be to lacquer the headstock face and oil everything else -
How loud is it unplugged?
not bad if you're noodling in front of the telly, no good if you're trying to compete with strummed acoustic guitars, but then not many acoustic basses are (unless the body is huge, like the EB Earthwood bass
Why oh why do so few accoustic basses have thumb rests?? Surely I'm not the only one who can't play a bass without either a pick up or rest to place my thumb on? Oh, and have a bump in case its not sold yet.
you could certainly attach a thumb rest to the top of this without it having too detrimental effect on the movement of the top (which may be why you don't see thumb rests on most acoustics) the easy way would be a bit of wood/mdf attached with double-sided tape, which I did on a Stingray once for similar thumb placement reasons
Go on paul, you know you want to Kev, i think it is Rosewood, but its a very dark rosewood.
I have recklessly bid on something I shouldn't have, when I get outbid (which is likely) I shall be back to see if this is gone or not, and think about it some more.
Not only that, but I've got money in my Paypal account I can use to buy music, but can't think of an album to buy.
I bought the Bat For Lashes album with the Paypal money, and after being asked if I'd be interested in playing some Brand New Heavies style jazz-funk (if that's what it is, I'm not up to speed with such music TBH, Last FM calls it acid-jazz) I've started wondering if a 5 string bass might be a handy addition Luckily I have no money at the moment to be rashly buying something, so I'll see if can master the playing techniques before deciding I need a new bass (could always build one, of course)
Amyone know what happened to Jeff who owned Machinehead music in Hitchin? Did he just sell up and go? I notice that Barrie Palmer who did great guitar setup left as well. Just wondering ..........
Jeff sold Machinehead to a mate of mine, Barrie is working nearer to his home (can't remember where) rather than continue to commute. Jeff has taken over World Guitars and is opening a new showroom in Gloucestershire (according to the trade press)
I have a similar problem, once I had 16 Yamaha SBVs, and then various Status/Modulus/StingRays, now I have one Bongo and no desire for anything else. I've had any number of amps and cabs and now have settled on the LittleMark II - still a bit of juggling to do with regard to cabs, but I'll be building those myself. I've bought and sold quite a few effects too, and currently have a Bass Floor Pod, which I'm thinking about selling as I'm not sure I'll be using it often enough to make it worth keeping. It's only a matter of time before something catches my eye, I'm sure - but those moments are becoming fewer with further between... Sorry.
Not only that, but I've got money in my Paypal account I can use to buy music, but can't think of an album to buy.
A lot of players don't know the fretboard, certainly above the 12th fret (that's why it's called the "dusty end"!!).
here's a handy tip - it's the same as the fretboard from the nut to the 12th fret
I want to do any drilling, so I'll content myself with losing that one switch option as the others will more than make up for it and I can always return to factory default for the cost of a 5 way switch - the one on it is temperamental.
you said there's a push/pull pot, you could use that
-
Tell me about it. I realised that that I was actually losing one option I currently have which is pickup nearest bridge soloed, but it so bright, I would never use it. The two bridge pickup combination is wonderful and I reckon all three would strip paint.
You can still connect the bridge pickup to the five way switch - the easiest way is to run the hot out from the pickup to the middle tag of a 3-tag on/on mini toggle switch, with one out to the five way switch and the other direct to the vol pot.
-
-
You could add a simple on/off switch to put the neck pickup on - then when the other switch has the bridge, or bridge and middle on, it'll give you either bridge and neck or all three on (I did it to a Strat a few years ago)

I tried one in Manson's in Exeter once, as long as you kept below the 7th fret it was reasonably in tune
I recorded once with a fretless Washburn and it was superb. The studio had one and as we were staying at the studio for 3 months, it was always by my side. It belong to one of the guys is Asia but he would not sell me it :(
I'm tempted to de-fret mine now It would certainly give me a reason to keep it . .
