OK let's take it that the Fender Jazz and Precisions are fighting over the number 1 and 2 spots and that Rickenbacker fills number 3 in this chart. What's next? I'm thinking basses real people played over the last half century, not prototypes and boutique beauties.
StingRay ?

Meshell Ndegeocello is pronounced Mee-shell N-deh-gay-o-chel-o (according to wikipedia (which states that the instructions were on early pressings of Plantation Lullabies), and tallying with what I read elsewhere a while ago (can't find it again, but I recall it being on her website))
I basically followed this: Except instead of a three way selector, one goes to tip and one is on a switch between the tip and the ring of a stereo socket. Oh, and the caps are earthed to the body of their respective pots. The two volumes are on concetric knob double pot though.
... and what problems are you experiencing ? (you're not making this easy ) If you wire the vol pots as you have there, you're probably finding that if you turn the volume all the way down on one pot you lose all volume when a standard jack is plugged in - normal on a Les Paul. It might make more sense to wire the two vol pots Jazz bass-style, each with their own tone pot, and cut the hot wire between vols to send the signal to separate jacks - that way the switch would kill the pickup if used with a standard jack.
Well, I've started playing on bridge pup a la Jaco style (heavy diggin' in), and I feel that string tension by the bridge pup is just too high/heavy - it's not comfortable at all, if you try to 'dig in'... So, I was curious, if there's any way to lower the string tension? My Ibby has MR-IV bridge (if it does make sense)..
lighter strings would help, for one

I like a bit of this sort of thing from time to time .. http://svtplay.se/v/1499678/veckans_konser...huslan_big_band not on there for long, apparently
Found part of the problem, a short, but now I seems to have a master volume and a weird interratcion between the two volumes on the stak pot. I though it was just like two seperate pots just concentric, but its not doing what I expectedwhen I just copied the wiring from a les paul but skipped the switch, and replaced with one that switches one of the pickups from tip to ring.
it would help to know exactly how you've got it wired now, otherwise it's not possible to make a helpful suggestion - can you draw out the wiring diagram ?
In fact I think I might have owned the black one?
the black one came S/H from a dealer (Steve Barr of all people) in the US and was sold to (IIRC) homerplaysbass along with a blue Bongo 5HS, don't know where it went after that though

When you say that each instrument has "been found wanting", can you define what each problem has been ? If you took most of the bass players with a recognisable sound and gave them a bass they'd never played before, they'd still sound mostly like themselves despite the limitations of playing with the "wrong" bass, so maybe you need to learn, in part, to be comfortable with your sound. Maybe you need to try some other basses, including the cheaper end of the market, to see of there's something there that works for you - I played a Squier VM bass (Tele-style early P bass headstock, big humbucker in the neck) in PMT the other day and it sounded fantastic for a £250 bass. (and I'm GASsing for one now).

or even a Maison, which was a "Squier/Epiphone" Bass Collection-a-like, as far as I recall (I had an orange one)
Thanks Paul, I just realised I was in error and edited my post. Doh. It's just the intervals below I was thinking of.
that's why my feeling is that it's better described as a 7th or flat/minor 7th from the root below (in terms of an interval), than a 2nd or flat/minor 2nd from the note above - less chance of confusion
-
That's fine and dandy (I think), but if I ask you to sing me the major 2nd below C, then I now know that will be Bb, ie. a whole tone down. I suppose I am so used to thinking of scales ascending, not descending, but now I know to treat a descending scale as a mirror of the ascending scale, in terms of intervals. Now, what the hell is a decim? 10th? Thanks for all your help! I hope I'm not going to turn into an annoying grasshopper ;-)
The only problem with your method is that if you mirror your intervals from a central note, the notes are going to form two different scales. Descending from C on a C major scale gives you C B A G F E D C, descending on a mirrored C Major scale gives you C Bb Ab G F Eb Db C - (C phrygian ascending) it might be better to think of them as whole or half tone steps than intervals, but if it works for you ..
-
I'd tend to describe the theoretical note in question in terms of its relation to the root an octave lower, so if it's a tone below the C it's a minor 7th from the lower C
-
OK, quick question. If the major 2nd interval above C is D, is the major 2nd interval below C, Bb or is it D an octave lower? Thanks.
If you read the Dolmetsch article on intervals, you'll see that the "usual/common/preffered/?" method for describing intervals is from the lower note upwards, so you'd need to define the lower note first, and then the interval will describe its relationship with the note above.
Hi there I'm wondering if this is my old bass. Did you, by any chance, buy it from Ebay and collect it from a property just outside of Crawley, West Sussex? Thank you! Neil
did yours have "MAC" inlaid on the fingerboard ?
Cheers Guys The Bass is now with Arrowhead, I know Paul will do what is required to make the bass as good as possible. Can't wait to get it back ! I've waited 10 week so whats another 2 ! Ade
you only have to wait one week - it's done P.
Ha ha, Paul_C, I love the wide washers stopping the plate being pulled off when the jack is removed. I might try that myself!
the fact that there are two jack sockets might be a clue as to the owner .. ( you can look at the original location of the pics for confirmation)

I've been using an ART TubePac preamp/compressor for a couple of years, and been very satisfied with it. Sadly no longer available new in the UK, it would seem - there is one on ebay (in the US) though.
