1. I needed a passive bass for some festies we were doing a couple of years ago... I bought a MiM P off the bay... A gamble I know but it turned out to be a beauty!
2.
Mine was satisfied just this week - photos soon (but 'don't want to hijack the thread) On topic - if you're looking to pay serious money, it may be worth looking at some of the CS Jazzers knocking about. I've seen a few recently and the build quality and finishing is generally impressive
Cor! Congrats on that... I'm wondering what year the RW's are replicating? I know it's 60's.
3. I have particularly bad gas for a RW sunburst jazz...
4. Heh... you can always add a pickguard. I thought I was going to have to get one. I was going to swap out the machines for vintage ones, add a pickguard, pup and bridge covers, a thumbrest/tugbar and Jazz style knobs. Oh and poss drop in a J-Retro or Audere!
5. Yes... I've tried the CV Jazz.... bloody great... although if you're wanting a fretless, the VM is superb also.
6. Can't afford any gas right now... okay then... RoadWorn sunburst Jazz please.
7. Cor... remove the frets and you'll have a nice looking jazzer! Congrats!
That looks so good. Thanks for the new term. That ones a first for me. Although that does seem a bit drastic for a 62 jazz!! I cant make up my mind wheather to refin my badly crazed black jazz let alone grind down the frets. Ohh, It really does look nice.
Thanks for the nice comments... it sounds even better! I'd seriously consider a J-Retro or another onboard pre before letting go of your Jazz.
Ahhh, maybe this is the answer!! This is why the DJ has been so appealing to me. BTW, you lost me on the stoned fret tangs!?
Well... it now plays and sounds like a fretless... prob not a choice for rock covers, I'm using it for Drum 'n' Bass. The J-Retro was/is a revelation. You might want to try one first.
Just had a thought, maybe i should just put a j retro in my jazz.
I did that to my '62 Jazz... best thing I ever did... I also had the frets stoned to the tangs. It's an absolute bass monster!
11. Looks fantastic! How much?
12. Mine of course... ...oops! Not for sale. If you don't mind the relic thing, I'd definitely go for a RoadWorn... the sunburst gets my gas going and it plays and sounds superb. £930 here in Oxford!
13. Cripes! Talk about the subjective! I've only had about four basses over my career...(Forty years), an old Jazz that was rubbish until now, a Stingray, SB1000F, and my more recent... a MiM P Bass. If I've got to choose It would have to be either of the fenders... you have to work on them however! I've had a really close relationship with them all. Non of them were 'one nighters' and I'm sorry to see two of them go... oh well. Believe me... you'll find one that just 'talks' to you... one day... it's a journey.
14. They put these in their more expensive basses too. If you want your Jazz pickguardless... watchout! The RW's are okay 'cept they've ROADWORN stamped in caps.
15. Yes... its for the CNC router... damn shame if you ask me. I dare say there's one under the guard of my MiM p bass.
16. Hmmm... they look quite tidy. Don't know anything about them.
17. I've always wanted one of these. One day... one day.
18. Yes... you can't beat an old Jazz Bass for fretless... mine's a '62 stoned to the tangs... superb.
19. I used to get a superb, almost upright bass tone off of my SB1000f by fingering over the board... not too high up obviously. Around the neck/body joint. Rounds as well here... always.
20. Of course I'll recommend the J-Retro... sounds interesting Andy. Keep us posted with your build... and piccys!
21. Yes... in my example the preamp has rescued my bass, from being a boring, non-discript sound sh*ter to something akin to god! It was prolly a mistake to put the DiMarzio's in, but to be honest, it had nothing going for it except the vintage vibe and superb neck. I do a lot of gigs with it through the board and always get a great sound from it now. I don't find I need to do a lot of fiddling with it. I've got it dailed in just right, although it's nice to be able to tweak it to compensate for acoustics and such. I couldn't be happier!
22. Cor!... love the stacks. Can I have?
23.
Interesting... What amp are you putting it through? Have you tried with the J_Retro in passive mode and then dialling in the same sound using the tone controls on your amp?
It's going through an Ashdown Mag300 combo. It's got nowhere near the bottom end this bass puts out now it's got the J-Retro fitted. I have to be careful with it. I've got to say that this guitar was languishing in it's case for many years because it wasn't cutting it for me tonally. Although I knew the neck was a corker. I had the frets stoned down to the tangs the same time as I fitted the J-Retro and now I can't put it down. I reckon I'd probably have been happy with any of the alternatives, I just got to the J-Retro first.
24.
I'm no longer convinced by on-board pre-amps of the traditional cut/boost variety because they don't do anything that the controls on your amp ought to do better.
I have to completely disagree here I'm afraid... before fitting my J-Retro my bass sounded quite dull and non-discript. Now it's totally alive! I've never come across anything like it, it's almost scary. I agree however that it's a 'what ever floats your boat' argument.
25. Me likey! Would make an interesting replica project, maybe using a CV 60's Jazz as a base. Bet it sounds real nice too... I've always liked the look of those stack knobs.
