Poll: Which Fender Jazz would you buy & why?
bubinga5 replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in Bass Guitars
Ill take your 50th Rich.. Other than that i would go for a Custom Shop to my spec.... Leaving Fender behind (which i would for this) i would go for a Pensa Jazz...I would have one of these over a AC, Celinder...i nearl bought this once but it fell through for various reasons Awsome awsome basses.... -
Yeah for me it takes all the harshness away..love it for slap.. yeah the BB's are high on my list....still love the Fat Beams though...Fender Jazz CS+ Nordstrands+ Fat Beams = Wonderfull tone
I'm not actually sure what mid scooped means tbh, coz it could mean scooped up, or down presumably???! It was just nice to have the same bass line played the same way with a load of different strings and to hear the difference, before I buy. And there wasn't a great deal of difference to my ears with some (but then again after 35 years of playing bass my ears are probably shot ) But at least I know that before parting with any dosh.
Bass, Treble, Mid..take out the mid and you have mid scoop...there is not too much bark from the mids with this sound, just bass and treble... the differences are much more evident when listening to the slapping parts BTW
I've seen this (and heard it), but IMO LoRiders aret mid scooped at all....
you may be talking about the nickle version.....sorry i should have said...im talking the stainless Low Riders...to my ears they are def mid scooped...Ed seems to think so too..

Holding it down..a melodic and rythmic sense of what suits the song....being able to read the song...there are so many dynamics that are involved i guess....Sensitivity and emotion is also what drives a good bass player...imho..

Ive just found this and answered my own Q in another thread...what was i saying about body wood being the tone of a bass?? for anyone who wants to hear the difference in DR strings,...this is a great tone reference..Review and comparison done by Ed Friedland on a Jazz bass.. for me its the Low Riders that exhibit the most mid scoop (which i love) the high beams seem to lack a little bottom, while the fat beams tend to be a little lighter at the bottom, ala..the name..its either the MM's which i use or the Low Rider's that i like the best... Ed gives a great description in words too. its opened my to what a string can do for your tone.. Hope this is useful to everyone.. by the way if i want anyone reviewing anything bass its this guy... IMHO you shouldnt have to substitute anything...i wouldnt play an instrument i wasnt 100% happy with...be it tone, feel, comfort, playability...saying that i dont mind different neck sizes...for me i guess if the tone isnt there you can forget it.. Wide 5 strings dont do it for me thats why the Sei is a gem.. If your unhappy, your playing the wrong bass

Ok im needing new strings and would like some input... I have had Elites, Rotos, La Bella's, XL,s, .. ive come to the conclusion that im a DR man..ive been using the Marcus Miller set...they just sound so good and last so long...very bright though.. Any other recommendations in the DR range that you have tried...that i should try..im torn between the smoothness of nickle and the snap of stainless... Anyone tried Slinky's on a jazz bass

Spotted this and it frickin annoyed me...why do they let people like Lauren Lavern have any opinion on something she knows nothing about... Its funny the whole program is based on Rock and there opinions of a bassist is from that, ....Because if they ever saw Randy Taylor or Victor Wooten play they might change there stupid f***in opinions.. its strange how commentators who apparently know about music are so badly informed? Why is when a program like this comes up its ALWAYS about rock??? excuse the rant
It’s all music and you’re not listening to it you’re playing it. That’s a completely different thing. I can't read well enough and I'm not a "one take wonder", but I've loved the recording that I've done and would have liked to have done much more. It certainly beats spending a day in an office!! Paul Turner can back Take That one day and Jay Kay the next, Herbie Flowers can play semi classical pieces with John Williams in Sky and Ever Lasting Love, Pino can play with anyone and make them sound good! There’s nothing “second class” about pop sessions.
I wasnt suggesting all pop is lame... to your first point.. yes it is all music, but i play what i listen too,,i wouldnt bake an apple pie with love if i didnt like apple pie....that where passion comes from...i cant play stuff i dont dig -
Just wanted to know how many of you girls/guys can really adapt to any style...myself i have been in bands from Rock, Reggae, to Pop..along the way ( to the misfortune of many, now friends..)i came to conclusion that i just cant do these styles...For bad or worse most of my life i have listened to hardcore techno, Gabba and arabian country music.. but seriously its been mostly Soul, Funk, JazzFunk, Disco, Hip Hop..i didnt mean it to be that way, its just my personality i guess and what spoke to me most, rhythmically and harmonically ..without wanting to blow my own trumpet, i feel do have a flair for the feel of it..... i do delve into stuff like Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, etc but because i dont know any modern Rock etc i think i lack....(although i do like the Foo Fighters, Primus and the Editors etc). to be honest i find most pop to be useless, unless its something really original..., .Radio 1 i find tedious...in particular certain R&B Dance, that seems like the voice has been altered in a way that it sound like the singer can change voice direction like a gospel singer..(ive just been in a car listening to N Dubs)..its horrible in many ways...sorry if this offends..it only my opinion... Anyways i guess im indoctrinated to certain styles, and because i dont listen to too many styles i dont care for, i would be useless in a session enviroment..coupled with the fact that i dont read...(at the moment).my point is can some of you out there adapt to anything... if so, is it because you listen to everything, or is it just talent and subconscious listening..or have you forced yourself to play music you may not like too much to get work....
Dunno about you, but, personally, I wouldn't go into this sort of stuff, if I couldn't read.. You never know, who's gonna happen, do you?
Well i dunno about you, but that might be an opportunity missed..there is lots of brilliant opportunities that dont involve reading...i would even say more so.. I will prob learn to read for the bass soon though as im learning to read with the piano
