1. My sister sent me this vid of Mr Reed doing the bass line on this epic track...... i dont think im going over the top in saying this guy is one of the best ever bass players in the world today.... his groove and fills on this are mind boggling... I think Sharay's strength totally lies in his awsome sense of groove, not choices and knowledge of chords etc... i could listen to this guys playing all day long. his fill at 4.09 his just epic.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff2CCSzjeHg&feature=relmfu
2.
It is a gray area, and like most of the techniques in bass playing, I think the technique that feels most comfortable and is able to give you what you need (e.g. being able to play fast/slow etc) is the one you need to find. My personal experience was always thumb over the top in most cases, unless playing higher notes. I've since been taught by a very competent bass teacher to fully relax the thumb and try playing the notes on the neck without applying any pressure with the thumb. I was taught a technique where you sort of pull from the shoulder and hit the notes that way, giving you more freedom to move up and down the neck. It also leaves the wrist fully relaxed and hanging while playing sitting down and standing up. I've also found, since doing it, that the neck barely moves as well which really helps as you always know where the notes are going to be. Hope this helps.
sorry Chris i have to respectfully disagree with your first comment.... i have a theory that most things that are good never come easy... a good left hand technique or finger/hand position is not necessarily right for the body... and going for the most comfortable position is not always the right way... falling in to that trap can lead to lazy techniques imo... sounds very strict but music accommodates music not the body..
3. i think this can come down to what your playing.. for something very easy i wouldnt keep the finger for every fret finger position.. finger/hand position is all about economics
4.
I would say that he is subordinate, not subservient. It's his choice to play supportively.
spot on.. i love some of his playing on FM's stuff.. his playing is wonderful.. not really important but my mum used to date Mick Fleetwood.. yes that is my very distant claim to fame..
5. hes also brother to the famous soul sister Vivienne McKone.. another great track with his epic playing.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJKQS_p9q5k

22. i mean not to offend with any of the following, as i would play pretty much anything if it came down to it... 1. Ricks.. Not a very pleasant shape, not a very pleasant tone.. 2. Single cuts... why? for the life of me i cant think of the reason of a single cut design..... my neck is stable enough thanks 3. Headless basses or basses that have multiple LED lights in the neck., with an ultra modern tone...OMG ,, where do i start on how bad that is... you need to give up the glory days of Mark King... step away from your Status and take that plaster off your thumb.. 4. Gibson SG Gibson thunderbird,, great tone, just not my thing shape wise 6. Fodera's... where do i start.. I hate to say it as they are awsome basses, but Fodera seem to have carved out this image through marketing that there basses are better than anything else on the market, and there prices reflect this.... utter nonsense...Martin Peterson at Sei can make a bass that could match any Fodera and so can STR, Sadowsky, etc.... but Fodera decide they will charge twice as much a everyone else..? i personally would feel like a self important moron playing a Fodera on stage 7.Buckeyed burl.. see 6. awful looking wood
23. not sure which Chaka albums but try some of Chaka Khans live stuff... check him out out on these two classic Chaka tracks.. awsome playing.. imo hes one of the best gospel bassists alive.. his playing ALWAYS has me interested.. this is THE man to listen to if you wanna nick some licks and fills....
24. ? grow out of what... some of his playing is very musical... why cant he turn out to be an even better player than he is now, or is that too much to bear.. what a negative response to a talent... everytime this lad gets put up there always seems to be an underlying sense of jealousy.... the guy can play and hes young....so what??? stupid thread..
