MDF is wood sweepings and glue!
i almost feel sorry for a bass made out of it. i would take it home and love it.

i awlays wondered what a bass made out of MDF would actually sound like with high quality pickups etc, as it has such an even density throughout. ? just a thought. not sure how much of a percentage of the wood is glue mind. and how that would effect sound.
Basswood is indeed an extremely good wood for making guitars out of, and more and more manufacturers are recognising that, particularly for six string guitars,. Sounds great for some basses too, like the previously mentioned Bongo. The great thing about basswood is that it is relatively lightweight and very resonant. I think most of the stigma some people attach to using basswood( or tilia, lime or linden , as it is also known) is because it is very plain in appearance and relatively inexpensive compared to some other commercial timbers. It is , however, a wood that has long been recognised for its' acoustic qualities , and as far back as the middle ages it was being used to carve woodwind instruments. Nothing wrong with baswood on the right bass.
Usually why you find basswood bodies are usually painted, or topped with a nicer wood like some G & L's.. i won't go into what wood sounds good debate, but imo it sounds just as good as any other with high quality pickups, and good strings. but thats another subjective debate.
Unfortunately, my friend, you have contradicted some folks very definite ideas about how and in what manner a muso should spend his money when choosing a bass.
to be fair mate, i don't think that was, what some guys points were at all. but never mind.
Am i alone in having no idea what this is supposed to be?
Oh come on Geoff.! man you just don't get Jazz do you.
You don't know what respect is.
possibly because its a softer wood, so can be easily dinged. Companies usually use a hard laquer/paint as to rectify this. Like the Bongo. thats made out of basswood.
Well my ESP f series has a basswood body. It's definitely no solid wood, it's seriously like a piece of MDF with a nice top, I know this because I threw it off stage.
im confused.
-
Yes mate I'll put some up! Depends what basswood really. Basswood can range from solid unknown wood to MDF and chipboard
? BassWood is a name for a species of Tree mate. also known as American Linden. bit of nerdy info for you.
Dunno mate. As you can tell by my name I'm all about the jazz. Just never been into p's and never really dug the sound. Maybe after a few bad experiences. But it's only personal preference eh. The old 60's and 70's p's I quite like, don't get me wrong. But the P bass is so ripped off nowadays every cheap guitar brand brings out a nasty basswood p bass, I suppose seeing all those ugly cheap things turned me against em a long time ago.
why do people think BassWood is bad .? there is nothing wrong with BassWood, seriously I've played some kick ass Jazz basses that were BassWood bodied, its very similar to ash but without as much grain. anyways, you got any more lovely pics of this Fodera.?
It's not a mantra, and I'm not a star-struck fan, I have a couple of albums on cassette and a free CD. However, I can recognise and appreciate damn good music and musicians, and understand why people like them so much. Most musicians should be able to do that. I detest Weather Report, but I can appreciate them. I can't stand Bach, but I understand why he is so revered. Open your ears and the stuff between them a bit mate, yes?
+1000

Bill Sharpe is just amazing imo. one of my musical heroes. anyone who might not have heard of him, he was the pianist for a band called Shakatak, . you might recognise a song called Night Birds . imo this is epic in anyones book.
This! IMO, with a natural finish, it has to be maple & pearl blocks all the way. Anything coloured, and it has to be rosewood and pearl blocks. Except possibly in the case of all black or all white, which can go either way. Binding essential, too.
ha ha, me too Simon.

The piano playing is overtaking the Bass playing.?
The way things are going with me musically, I'm tempted to go back to piano/keys. Get a good keyboard & you can get some excellent bass sounds too! I'm a great believer in learning as many types of instrument as possible, that way you can understand what your part needs to do in the song.
i know what your saying, but i love actually playing the bass physically. no software can match that. -
I will always be a bass player. But the more i have lesson/ play the Piano/Reading, the more i think there is more music at my finger's. I've got to grade 3 now, and its a real musical journey. maybe its because i never had the chance geographically to get good bass lessons. it is helping my bass playing no end. anyone else playing the piano.? like i said the bass for me is forever.

I just don't get it.......but I'm willing to learn
bubinga5 replied to Roland Rock's topic in General Discussion
i think there is something to learn, i was never into Bob Dillon, thought he was an bad singer, just didn't get it. then i listened to his lyrics and then realised what all the fuss was about. you like what you like, but there is so much amazing music out there that doesn't necessarily hit your buttons initially. you can't like everything, but you can certainly make the effort. i know this, if you do, it will make you a better musician. -
I had a superb SR5, single H. yes it was heavy, but man was it a joy to play. and a monster tone. the spacing was great. Never really was into the slap tone, but thats just preference of course. can't really see why a G string closer to the edge would be a problem, and certainly don't see it as a design fault. the only thing i can think of is if someone is bending a note/pulling downwards, and technically there is no reason to do this.maybe I'm missing something. im trying to think of a reason, playing wise why/ how you could pull the G string of the neck,? an SR5 is not that close. I'm really not convinced its a design flaw to this instrument. the only thing i can think of is a heavier touch.?

there a little thin on the ground around Gloucestershire, and never seem to be dedicated Electric Bass teachers, but sometimes thats can be a good thing, imo. i never did, or ever found someone. but i did take Piano lessons, and it helped my bass playing no end. anyway this is a good link. i hope you find your way.
