1.
I have a couple.... Wood and Tronics and a Valenti. Really got back into passive basses again having bought a Jazz Road Worn, but still want to use the active basses, all be it in a passive mode, but I am curious by switching them to passive, will I lose some of what they are capable of, apart from the obvious that happens going from active to passive...
you will be running the sound to what your pickups are capable of.
2. What's the weight please.
3. Delano are also.
4.
More recommended listening from the Bass Player article.. Everything he does is so sympathetic to the song/track..
Now that is what I'm talking about.! Fantastic bass playin. That Hubert Laws record is fantastic.!! Lee Oskar . Excellent stuff.
5. It depends on the preamp, of course there will be a drop off in performance, thats what an active system is there for. But some preamps are clean, meaning, they will not colour the sound either in active or passive, with (importantly) no drop in volume when switching from active to passive. Some preamps are coloured specifically for there manufacturers tone. and also when you switch the battery off, you will get a drop in volume and the specific tone to that preamp. What bass are you referring to.? The experts will be along soon.
6. Thats an old vid. That guy now is a monster bass player as you might imagine. His name is Micheal Pipoquinha. his solo work with his band WDR. check out his solo @ 2.25
7. I think this is brilliant, creative, musical chordal playing from the great Uriah Duffy. a great rendition of Micheal Jackson's Human Nature.
8. I love Bobby Vega. He is out there on his own with his breadth of technique's and musicality. And that palm muting is great.
9.
Yeah I'd put Maruszczyks on par with Masterbuilt Fenders I think. Si
I would go with this. Mine is certainly ass good as any CS Fender. Well the ones I've played.
10. You can just see the music in his face, and his want of perfection and musical anticipation when he's playing. ! When he played for Chaka Khan on Naughty, He insisted on playing the same part over and over, until he thought he got it right. To go as far as stopping for hours to rehearse the bass part n his own, until he got to where it sounded good. He says it all right here of what he was about. Thats a man who's dedicated to music and his craft. Almost to the point of obsessiveness to an old fashioned way of thinking. But you gotta love him for it. Im not sure he's correct in some ways, as Stevie Wonder at that time was playing some epic bass synth lines, that could easily match anything he was or has played. Interesting person he was. some of his bass lines and musicality blow me away. And when he plays the funk……..good lord.
11. Everything on full, then EQ from your amp. Whats the point in making it sound like a P Bass. ?
12. I have a great Maruszczyk 5 string Jazz Bass. I wasn't very happy with the Delano pickups, or the Sonar 2 preamp. Then i put a set of DR Fat Beams on this bass. Good lord above!!!. This instrument is now an absolute beast. i play a 45 -125 set and it is hard to describe the tone through the Aguilar. Its totally changed the instrument. Im not sure what strings were on before, but the preamp and pups sounded quite lack luster. I think the heavier gauge counts. I am only playing the bass passive, so I'm not sure what the Delano sonar 2 preamp sounds like until i can get a 9v battery tomorrow. but passive, it sounds pretty fat, just a great sounding jazz bass. Lots of growl, pretty much a Marcus Miller tone. Its easy to underestimate what a fresh set of strings can do. But I've had this experience with DR strings before. they are just superb. I know the making behind these particular strings that makes them so so special, but i won't bore you with it. IMO the best electric bass strings ever made. Compression wound, round core, stainless steel greatness. I swear by these strings. and there getting cheaper as Marcus has gone to Dunlop. the bass in question.
13.
Now we're talking the same language. Blue
Good man.!
14. Huge mass production is inevitably going to knock out some bad instruments.
15.
I did a couple of shows with him yes. Was a big treat to play THAT bassline for real
There's nothing Like this type bump.
16. John Scofield, Billy Cobham, Alphonso Johnson, George Duke. What a band playing a Billy Cobham classic. This is just sit back class Jazz Funk. I just bought Billy's album 'Focused' again as i lost it. there is a track called Mirage that is fantastic, that he played on an old BBC 2, or it could be channel 4 i can't remember. a programme called Jazz 606. Anyone remember it.? This is such a great great great….. Billy Cobham record from Focused. Its so very funky. There is no point in mentioning Billy Cobham's sublime drumming, as many know what he's about. The groove is as tight as can be. Stefan Rademacher's bass solo at 6.10 is great He's playing a pre Gibson Tobias 5 string on this recording i believe.
17. These are monster jazz basses.!
18. I think it makes a difference with the tension/tone and the way the string behaves or lasts. Feel free to disagree. while putting on my new 5 string set, i noticed as i was winding on the tuner peg the string would try to naturally twist. So. When winding and the string is loose (when the string gets tighter) hold as hard as you can on the string by the nut and let the ball end fall/twist into its natural position in the bridge ( ooh you filthy buggers). THen pull the ball end in to the bridge and tighten up. Im pretty sure if you don't do this it has a negative affect on the winding of the string. Thus effecting the natural position of the windings of the string. wether its unwinding or winding too tight I'm not sure. Just a thought.
19. I owned a Custom Shop LTD Edition 1970 jazz bass, Only 100 made. Natural pearl block's, binding etc. and I've got to say It was quite a fantastic instrument. Didn't have the oomph that i wanted, but it was really nicely made in that old school Fender way. it wasn't perfect but thats what i liked about it. Was very consistent across the stings and the harmonics rang out. I was playing it in cheltenham in this pic. Was quite light as i remember. Certainly did have a little growl, but i do have my string on the low side. Would i get another Fender. MIJ,CIJ,Standard USA. Yep. Custom Shop hell no. There are basses like the one i own now, including many other's the list is endless that blow them away imo.
20. Just fantastic Prince on lead guitar and his erm, lovely ladies on the rhythm section.!! http://www.facebook....72/?pnref=story
21.
I guess most folks know Pete is the drummer with level 42? If not you do now
Pete is a drummer of many bands.
22.
Those of us that are gigging bass players and especially those of us that do this for a living are certainly not better or more real than the "bedroom noodler". Some of the best bass players I know, don't gig and have no interest in gigging. However, as gigging bass players most of us are different with different aspirations, priorities, commitments goals and agendas. Blue
Maybe i have read your post wrong. But imo there is only two word's you should have used for gigging musicians Blue. Commitment's and Priorities . The rest of those word's are applicable to any one who plays the bass, or any other instrument.
23. this Stevie Wonder cover is also fantastic. sorry to semi derail your thread KP. its certainly interesting what she's doing, and she's breaking new ground.
24. Yeah it is KP, very clever no doubt. Its probably my dislike of theatre, I'm not a fan a musical's, or Opera and I rarely concentrate on lyrics in music. (there are exceptions of course). My wife is always prompting me as to what the song is about, and I'm like, oh yeah that really opens up a different dimension to the song. but i get pretty absorbed in the sounds of the instruments and the rhythm . I've always been the same. My Dad was the musical director for the Hastings Orchestra in New Zealand and i listened to classical since i was 3 to 10 years old. maybe thats what programmed me. Then instrumental Jazz and Funk came along. Then again i love Gene Kelly and his singing dancing. . work that out. I prefer this. (yes again i post this). Its just wonderful singing bass playing from her.
25. Tis a bit too theatrical for me. But i respect her mixing it up. Fantastic bass player she is.
