  1. Ive used em and had the same problem. Contact lube works to a degree. And +1 to what EAD said regarding different sockets.

  5. Weren't there some odd-ball Brit one in the '60s that had boost switches in them? Would these count as 'active'? I would guess MM , followed very closely by the Ibanez MC series.
  6. BBOT fan here; would not put a Badass on any of my Fenders. Irrespective of their properties,.I find the Badass hideous. Plus one to the Wilkie. Had one on a Jap Fender.

That L2 I recently picked up, the guy who sold it to me said he'd been contacted by a guy in the 'States who has apparently made it his mission to buy up as many Steinys as he can. They very rarely come up and with a predator like the Yank buyer on the loose you'd need to be quick on the draw! EDIT: I may have to eat my words about them rarely coming up - there's 3 L series and an XL on USA ebay!!
  9. I got a new, custom finish CS Jazz from a US dealer a couple of years ago, cost me £1850, inc shipping. To buy a similar guitar today would cost me £2500, without shipping. Even if you knock off, say, £200 for an ex-rate adjustment, it's still nearly a £400 increase over two years, albeit at a retailer's pricing.
  10. I've not had an NPB for a while, TF. But having to go through the rigmarole with ebay to claw their final value fees back is a bind. I'm a great believer that NPBs should be bounced right away and their IP address logged for future reference. Ratbass, how did you know the original winner wasn't prepared to pay up? Or were there other criteria that made you relist the Steiny?

I've played an EB3's mudbucker on it's own and both Grant and Avon EBOs and the latter two were defo more sh*te than the EB3. And the Grant was worse than the Avon: a weak, dull sounding bass.

  18. Navigator is the top of the range from ESP. This model, imported from Japan, sports an early '60s style 3-tone sunburst, non-slab rosewood unlined board. NEck has vintage rivet-shaft reverse-gear tuners and has the '63-onward slim neck profile. Currently sporting a set of Fender '60s pickups (the orginal set is microphonic but will be included in the sale) but has the original harness - with 500k pots - in situ. No dings but one or two light blemishes in the finish on the top; these are only seen at a certain angle. It's currently sporting an incongruous, flaky bell-plate but I have a clean spare which I'll put on the instrument when and if it sells. I'd prefer local pick-up from East Lothian (or free delivery with Edinburgh area), but will ship if buyer arranges own courier/insurance. I'd also be willing to travel via car or train, within reason, to complete deal. [b]I have now added a case into the deal![/b] The basses are rare as hen's teeth, the UF one even more so. Why pay £1600+ for the Fender Jaco models when you can have this for less than half? Couple of quick pix just now, but will try post some more later. [size="4"]Bass withdrawn from sale.[/size]
  19. Back in the '90s I did a long agency stint at a well-known courier firm, now subsumed into a large European firm. I didn't do 'bulk' - pallettes, etc - but packages up to the size of guitar cartons. I can say that I never saw any couriers mishandle freight, deliberately or otherwise, but that's not to say it didn't happen. I reckon the majority of damage comes from the bulk transit deliveries between hubs. These usually arrive in late evening and throughout the night and if you've every seen baggage handlers at work, well, the conveyor-belt sorters are not far off of that: stuff get's tossed into cages with no thought for care. These cartons with 'fork-lift damage' - it's a possibility. But for me, the real danger for freight items was when they lost their barcodes. Once that happened, irrespective of an address being on the box, the item could not be scanned. It would then remain in the warehouse until the floor managers recoded it, a process that coudl take some time. Until then, it would go into a cage along with the other orphans and be put to one side. And possibil disappear, like a 335 I once shipped. It used to be that if a courier dropped you off an item that clearly had considerable damage that you could A) refuse it, citing damage or accept it, marking 'damaged' beside your signature. This was meant to give you more clout with insurance if the item inside was damaged, as you suspected. However, I do recall hearing that, with certain couriers, if you accepted the package at all then that was an admission that teh item was in perfect condition.The other downside was that if you rejected it, you might have, say, £1k's worth of guitar sitting in a warehouse for x amount of days until the issue got resolved. That's how I saw it, in the past; dunno what it's like now.

[/quote] I've heard of two L series that had slight up-bows, enough to cause fret choking, and one of these was on a mate's L2. A lot of fret work was needed and after that it played fine. Sid Fang's statement on epoxy/graphite blends not having enough ridigity is most plausible but these are RARE events in my book.
  21. Why must it be an as-new one? The Steiny group on Yahoo is a good source for parts but no doubt you're aware of that? But if I were you, I'd bite the hand off the BCer selling his L2.

Plus, they'll never be made again, not unless someone does some serious 3d priniting: the plugs and molds were lost/destroyed during the Gibson years.
