Bought a couple of Ric's with unbelievably smelly cases. Couldn't get rid of the stink no matter what I tried, so the basses got re-housed in new cases, and the old ones are in the garage. As has been suggested, if it's a cordura style case, stick it in the washing machine, a couple of pods and loads of fabric conditioner.

I originally ordered the 20dB filters, but they were too effective, and I couldn't hear conversation, bought a pair of the 17dB filters, and they're spot on. Again, I had the moulds done at a branch of Boots, very professional.

If you want really good ear protection, then ACS Custom earplugs are the way to go. Not cheap, but well worth it, and last for years.

Definitely the one to go for if you want that Geddy Lee growl.

Need to hear if this project is even going to get off the ground, let alone anything else first! From what I can see, the "go to" gauge for 5's is around 130/135. Can get a 5 string set of Warwick Red's for less than £15, so that'll probably be the starting point, and work from there. If the project gets off the ground... Cheers all. 👍

There is the potential that I might become involved in a new project that will more than likely be heavy on the down tuning side of things. As I only own 4 string basses, all of which are strung with 45-105's, I'm starting to think I need to maybe look at getting some heavier gauge strings on one of the basses, and some nut adjustments to accommodate the heavier gauge. But, the question is, what is the best string gauge for BEAD (or possibly even lower?)? Obviously, been looking at various options, such as DR's DDT's, but how low from standard will the 45-105 set go before they loose too much tension? Just to add something else into the mix, I only ever use Stainless strings due to getting a reaction with NPS. Done a few searches, and it looks as though 65-125 would be a sufficient gauge to go for, but calling out to the collective wisdom of the BC massive for any potential guidance that can be imparted. 👍

If you're not enamoured with the sound of the amp, then maybe use this to "upgrade" the amp. You don't say what sort of band you're involved with, and what sort of gigs you're playing, and whether you're using some or all of the Cube's 120w. IIRC, there's an Ashdown 1x12 combo in the Amps For Sale section, which is cheap, and would sound a darn sight better than the Cube, plus it'll give you a lot more headroom if you need it. Not affiliated with the seller btw. It also will have an effects loop and the ability to bypass the EQ section too. The downside is that they aren't the lightest.
