Active EQ Basses: I know it's an unpopular opinion, but apart from an old Westone Thunder 1A, I've never managed to get the sound I want out of a bass with an active pre-amp. I've owned a few, including StingRay's (2EQ), an SB1000, a G&L L2000 Tribute, and a few others. The SB, 'Rays & G&L were nice to play, but I couldn't get that sound. Went back to a passive bass, and there it was. Flatwounds: tried them, didn't get it.

Hessey's in Liverpool is long gone. Only ever bought a couple of things from them, as they were too expensive for my pocket at the time, but tons of drool-worthy gear. Famed for where The Beatles bought some of their equipment. There used to be another shop on Woolton Road IIRC, but I can't recall the name. Curley's was always my favourite when it was on Stanley St. (next door to Hessey's, and round the corner from Probe Records), always used to have a good selection of basses in. They're still going, now on Renshaw St. where Taskers used to be.

If it was too loud for the members of the band, imagine how the punters felt.

Most definitely Electro Music on Doncaster, great shop, great staff. I recall the veritable joy of discovering a whole floor of basses & bass gear, loads of variety, not just the obligatory FSO's. Bought my first 4003 from there (as well as many guitars, amps and other music related stuff).

Big fan of D'Addario Pro Steels on my 4003. Tried a few different types, but the Pro Steels just sing IMO.

Seen pics on Facebook of some of the Brookes 12 strings, and they look amazing. Overwater recently posted a pic of a custom 8 string they were building, and that one looked really cool too. Doesn't help my itch for an 8 string one little bit!

Time marches on. Our two turned 18 this year, and have both passed their driving tests, so we see even less of them! One is off to Uni in September, the other is back to college on a music course and being in as many bands as he can (drummer). More importantly, they've turned into decent people. You must be immensely proud of all your kids @AndyTravis.
