NBD: Cort Rithimic V Jeff Berlin Signature
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Skol303's topic in Bass Guitars
Cort make wonderful basses. The Rithimic 4 I played at the LBGS a couple of years ago was remarkably good. Didn't know they'd made a fiver! Very lovely it is too! -

I saw them at ATP a few years ago - the one curated by Melvins and Mike Patton. It was the first time I'd heard them. An amazing experience. I find I have to be in the right mood to listen to them though. Sometimes they do little for me, at other times it's like listening to Planets mating.
Just a quick thought....Anyone using preamp/eq pedals to get their tone and using their amp pretty much purely to amplify?
I do! Tech 21 Leeds straight into the back of whatever amp there is. I really love the sound of the Leeds pedal so I figured it made sense to bypass the amps's preamp stage. Satisfaction.
i was under the impression the RM800 had the ashdown sound. should also mention that we play classic rock covers so the amp should fit to that.
The Rootmaster has the Ashdown tone, no doubt about that. I had one for a while and found the driven sound very similar to my old ABM500. A bit less heft maybe. And, The Rootmaster is supposedly the updated MAG anyway, IIRC, so you should be on familiar ground. Moving to TC will be quite a change.

2016 Poll - How old are you?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to 12stringbassist's topic in General Discussion
May we ask why? Isn't it possible to look at last year's poll and add a year onto the results?
That would work assuming nobody has left or joined since. We may have had a sudden rush of 85 year old bassists joing our ranks. -
Read the situation. Make indicative nods at the other musicians, read whether the solo is going to end correctly or not and try and adapt as a band.
This. It's not really something you can plan for. Unless of course the guitarist in question has a habit of making the same error repeatedly!

Whatever happened to the cronos bass?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
It was a standard active Fender Jazz apart from the upper octave being fretless. It also had a 12th inlay LED and a laser LED on the headstock IIRC. Pretty sure it was a custom job for Cronos, not released for the public. There was a company doing a similar thing that advertised heavily in Bass Player a few years later but the name escapes me. -
Cool story, My band is a 70s style hard rock and blues band. We have been together for 10 years and play around 75 shows annually. We still attract and have a loyal following of the 60+ demographic. When the 20 somethings wonder into one of our shows they leave immediately. That's fine, we're lucky, we don't need their business.
There's the answer, surely. Your band appeals to the over sixties and not to twenty-somethings. Doesn't mean they don't like rock, just that your band doesn't appeal to them for whatever reason. Blue - do you have any clips of your band playing that we could see? It would be interesting to get an idea of the type of stuff you play.

I've dealt with Mark many times - top chap. You're lucky living so close, he has some wonderful basses at the moment!

Anyone have any experience of this? Any risks? I don't know why there should be but alarm bells always start ringing, hazy memories of warnings never to purchase from sellers in the East or something daft.

Is this the only short-scale Steinberger ever made?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to sblueplanet's topic in Bass Guitars
He really did have tiny hands didn't he! -
For heavy drop-tuned music there's no harm in a bit of flop. All that rattle and growl can throw up some interesting tonal quirks and anomalies which can add to the aggression. I used to use Roto 50 - 110 for C#. Worked well for me.
It seems to me the issue here is more with the drummers attitude than the actual damage itself. It`s annoying if any gear gets damaged by someone, but if they aren`t very apologetic afterwards, well this would probably increase my annoyance somewhat.
This.

I have tried, On recommendation I've bought 2 or 3 of their albums. I don't get them though.
Completely missing the point of the thread!
The price! I was hoping they did a 'cheap' custom set of flats as they do with the rounds. It's a custom set I have on (.108 Bottom E). G,
I ordered mine from the US - cost me about £45 all in I think. Still fiendishly pricey for strings but I figured I wouldn't be changing them again any time soon...

It sounds to me that your issue is not so much with playing the bass itself, but with playing bass for a band which is not giving you any spiritual reward. I've been there - I quit the band. Not an easy decision but I found my lack of enthusiasm was starting to poison my relationship with music itself, and not just that of the band. There's no need for it to be unpleasant and you might even get a nice farewell gig out of it! After leaving the band I never stopped playing as such but found it a bit uninspiring to sit at home and play unaccompanied. It's difficult when you're used to playing with others, particularly with a great drummer. After about a year or so I ended up depping for a mate's covers band and am now the full-time bass player (I say full -time, our gigs aren't as frequent as we would hope!). It's just covers, classic rock and pop, but it's great to play out of the comfort zone, and it's great not to have to bash heads writing material all the time. And needless to say it's a wonderful feeling to have a roomful of people up and dancing to a song they know and love. Of course it may all pan out differently for you but I honestly think the first step is a clean break from your current situation. Onwards and upwards.
