1.
Well, their opinion of good tone is quite different to my idea. To me, the Precision has one of the worst bass tones around (as well as being quite ugly and never playing brilliantly). Different vinegar strokes for different folks and all that!
I think we must have different ideas of what the basses role is within a band context hence the stark contrast in perception of the tone of a Precision/T-Bird. To me they're there to sit in the mix of a band and fill out the sound, not to cut through or have an in your face sound. For the latter, I have the Overwater.
2. If you have reasonable speakers on your PC just play along, otherwise you'd need to direct your signal to the linein port on the soundcard and go for headphones. Suppose you could also use the lineout signal into your rig ?
3. Chances of them ACTUALLY having it in stock ?!
4.
I've got to say that I've always thought the T Bird was one of the worst sounding basses out there, next to Fender Precision basses etc etc
Is that meant to be serious ? If so, it's one of the most hilarious things i've ever read ! I'm quite sure there are thousands of players worldwide who feel the Precision is one of the BEST sounding basses out there. Are they all wrong ?
5. Just can't leave the place alone eh ?! P.s. I'll be down at some point next year Mark, we need a catch up.
6. Yeah spotted that the other day, looks pretty hot - would like to see it as a 5/6 string and in some other colour combos !
7. Double result !
8. My experience of Vintage basses is mixed, some of their range is very good (pricer stuff) but the low end stuff is well, low end ! I don't think the EST96 can even hold a dim candle to the Ray34, don't sell it.
9. It was the seller's name that got me.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-GIBSON-THUND...3#ht_1331wt_905
10. I'll get down there at some point next year - not been to Mark since he was in the farm shed !
11. The ones that got away huh ? We all have our stories, I fear you may have more than most though .
12. When these first came out I couldn't stand the body shape, but I have to say it looks pretty decent in this configuration - the sunburst makes it look a bit less pointy.
13. Let's add this one in too.. purchased yesterday as a result of GAS.
14. I embrace the GAS, working with it is easier and leads to less guilt when it does finally break you. The T-Bird is an iconic instrument i've always lusted after but never pursued before. All I need now is a Ricky and a Precision ! EDIT: Just found this soundclip on the Epi website - sounds just like this for anyone curious . 15. Yeah i've already lowered the strap to the max, will do the obligatory strap button mod soon as well .
16. Looks like this chap is keeping me in a job... moving to correct forum.
17. Moving this to correct forum...
18. Went to PMT Birmingham today for a post Xmas browse with the missus had a bit of cash on me as presents received. I kind of knew what I was letting myself in for.. there'd be something there the same price as what I had in my wallet and i'd buy it. Well - there's no point evading fate is there ?! Saw this Epiphone Thunderbird on the wall, brand new for £199. Walked away with it for £10 less than that, very happy. Plugged it in at home and it does not disappoint - that thunderous grindy rock tone is in abundance. First bass i've bought since 2005 (seriously) as i've done nothing but trade for the last 5 years.
19. Please add a cash value to give people an idea of the value of this bass .
20. Yeah - a few years ago I thought coffee table basses were ostentatious and didn't offer anything really different to production instruments. There's still plenty of production basses I like and wouldn't rule one out, but I don't think i'd have one in place of the Progress, only to compliment it.
21.
I remember that holoflash Spector Matt, at that mini bash we had in Manchester some years back, I thought it was a great bass that.
Oh you mean this one ? To be fair I regret selling it - I could do so much more with it now than back then (2006 by the way).
22. Not that I remember..
23. Update time ! It's only been 3 years since the original post... Lots of movement here. Stingray swapped for Lakland 55-02.. cracking bass, just a little too polite 55-02 swapped for Warwick Corvette $$ 5... certainly not polite ! Awesome tone but couldn't get on with the neck And Corvette swapped for Bacchus Venus 5... Milleresque sound with top craftsmanship - slab body a slight annoyance. And Bacchus swapped for Overwater Progress III Deluxe ! This one is easily the best bit of kit i've ever had, not sure what else could top this really.
24. I have a Zoom guitar effects pedal that works perfectly well for bass too, but I generally use it as a headphone amp only. Have had effects pedals in past but really - for me there's no point in having an expensive bass if you're going to completely wipe it's natural tone out with effects,
25. £25 discount for fundamental QC flaws ? Sounds like they don't want the hassle of sending it to Yamaha. You can't make the Distance Selling Act apply if they're outside the UK can you ?
