You're a man of great taste...

I should learn to read.. I thought it sounded thin live, not vice-versa...

As has been mentioned, it could be a number of things. I'd check the pickups aren't too close to the strings, first. Then... off for a pro setup.

John Paul Jones playing bass for Seasick Steve
I would never for a moment consider you to be a blues policeman. For shame...
I don't mind that he's not authentic, and he's not rubbish. It just puzzles me why he's so average, yet so revered.... -
I bloody love my Promethean: Recording from last Thursday in a room with about 150+ people
Just got round to listening to this... cool
Whether the blues police think Mr Seasick is 'authentic' or not is entirely beside the point. He is making a healthy living, which the late Mr Burnside is not.
Of course, but we're all entitled to have a little chat about whether we think he's any good or not. -
FWIW - I mailed Thomann to ask if they had it in stock, prior to ordering. They didn't, but told me when it was due in. They were spot-on, and it was with me a couple of days later.
Had a reply and they say they dont have stock....have a look on their Ebay site though and they say they do.... For those that have mentioned Thomann......I have used Thomann before...not a pleasant experience. I bought a (nearly £900) dac off them, advertised in stock, but that wasnt the case, after the wait, when it eventually arrived it was obviously a used or returned item, the packaging was an obvious clue and one of the inputs (toslink) was busted. The return process was painless enough but that was the only part of the transaction they got right. I swore there and then I wouldnt use them again. Dont get me wrong here...I aint trying to have a dig or anything, I'm just left totally confused about the way people conduct their business.......I'm prepared to pay the price for a NEW item that hasnt seen the light of day since it left the manufacturers. I think I'll pass until I can lay my sticky mitts on something suitable. Many thanks for all replies and for the advice...its given me plenty to think about.
In that case, stick with the line on the original (like the YT clip), and lay it down like you mean it. -
Yeah, that's kinda the issue, though - it just doesn't sound good at all. Am I just going to have to roll all the tone off, play near the neck and glare at the drummer the whole time?
This stuff is all about the feel. Each note has to count.. Is the drummer sympathetic to the tune, or is he playing all over it? -

Whenever I play it. I just do something simple along these lines... That's all it needs... -
I guess there must be lots of people with crap speakers attached to their televisions.
Not me... but, IMO, the bass sounded weak in the mix. -
'tube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beXuw-x166o The bass was mixed way too low, IMHO. Does JPJ always leave the pickup covers on? Guess it's ok if you pluck right on the end of the fingerboard.
I've just watched it on the iPlayer thingy. Yep - the bass is there, but it's barely audible. And very scooped. But still - my God.. how mediocre is he? (SS, not JPJ) -

Fair play to SS, though - he's done alright out of it... -

I never got the Seasick Steve adulation... Isn't he Country Blues for people who buy CDs from ASDA? *ducks behind rock* -
Anybody going to see Geddy and friends next month??
I was trying to put my finger on it and it sounds like there is a lot of very low end and a fair bit of high end but not much in the middle?
Obviously those halls are a mare to mix, but my own feeling is that Alex's mushy tone has a lot to do with it these days. He used to have a lively, clear crunchy tone. Now it's dull and muddy. IMO. -
Apologies for reviving an old thread, but the video clips I've made in the past have used the crappy mic on my camera. I've now got a Zoom H2 which, and I thought I'd do another clip to try and give an idea of how hefty these combos sound... (If you can't stomach hackneyed 12-bar basslines, look away now)

Transcribing original songs from MP3s
wateroftyne replied to solo4652's topic in Theory and Technique
Well, that's what I've been doing, really. Trouble is, after a few listens I think I've got it but after few more listens, I convice myself that it's something else. And so it goes on. Headaches, confusion, irritation...
...then it's time to stop listening for a bit! You'll be amazes how much the brain does behind the scenes when you're not listening. When you come back to it, it'll make more sense... -

Everyone's approach is different - mine would be just to listen to the song repeatedly, and let it sink in. A line will present itself eventually... -
The build quality of the Promethean is excellent. IMO, it looks quite cool, too.

1 mic to record a jam? (for own listening).

I hung on and bought a used H2 for re surround function. I can just plonk it in the middle... -
Ah, OK. Looking at the price of the MiniMark, I've got an idea of your budget. I can only recommend what I've used, and I'd 100% recommend a Promethean: http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_p5110_promethean.htm There's a few Promethean lovers here on BC.

What are you going to be using the combo for? Gigs? Rehearsals? Do you have PA support?
