1. Clearly going into the shop and trying it would be my preferred option, but neither are in Newcastle. And yes, I suppose I could ask GuitarGuitar to send them both to the shop, but what's the point if they're boat anchors? This shouldn't really be that complicated IMO. Other retailers have managed it...
2.
Check the manufacturers website - many include weight as part of the spec. Failing that, try Google. What bass is it?
We've discussed this earlier - there's too much natural variance from bass to bass.
3. Can any of the Limelight P owners give me any insight into the neck profiles on these? Are they C, or U? Chunky, shallow...? Ta :-)
4. Tony Levin played Going Home from Local Hero as well. The most un-Levin like bass I've heard.
5.
so wondering what it was I just went on their website and looked for sunburst fenders to find out what it is....
...and you'd be wrong :-)
6.
Blimey, you are a stickler, aren't you?
My back isn't like it used to be, and I just want to know the weight of something I'm going to have hanging off my shoulder for up to 2 hours a time. A stickler, or sensible?
7.
There must be some way of finding out how much the particular model weighs without them doing it, even if you have to go to the manufacturer.
It varies from tree to tree... weighing the bass itself is the only answer.
8.
Well, if you don't possess a set of scales (bathroom or otherwise) I imagine it'd be a bit tricky...
That's a fair point. I just assumed a mail order retailer would own a pair of scales.
9. Hey gang There's a particular bass I'm quite interested in buying, and I spotted that a popular online and bricks-and-mortar retailer (I'm not going to name names. Oh, go on then - guitarguitar) have a couple of examples in stock. So I emailed them and asked if they would mind weighing them, 'cos I'm one of those sticklers for weight. I got a very rapid reply from an apologetic chap who said they have no way of weighing a bass(?). I've asked the question before of other retailers and always got a reply so.. this surprised me. Was I asking too much of them, do you think?
10.
Good video but John Illsley has let himself go a bit.
Ha :-)
11. If someone uses flats and all they get is a dead thump, they're doing something wrong.
12. ...and can you confirm wether or not it's coated in ground-up unicorn horn?
13. I've changed a few times with New Moon, and it's always taken a minute or two over the phone.
14. FWIW, I just paid about £95 to cover about £6000 worth of stuff.
15. Mr. Venom lives next-door to my pal. Disappointingly, it's a normal-looking house, and not a castle or a dungeon.
16. Thread bump... I've just renewed with New Moon insurance, having been with them for the last couple of years. I spoke to a very pleasant man in an office in Tunbridge Wells, who told me the premium is the same as last year. Which is nice, especially as it's on the right side of £100 for quite a few grand's worth of gear. Of course the proof is in the pudding, and (touch wood) I haven't had cause to claim yet, but nothing I've read anywhere gives me anything other than confidence in them. Definitely worth a look.
17. While we're on, did I ever post this clip from a gig I did a year or so ago? I probably did, but I'm going to post it again. http://youtu.be/j1Ys3SBl17g?t=5m59s
18. Here's Illsley at his best, IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUOqTIaau3o
19. Yeah - the bass in Live at the BBC is totally out of character. Great stuff, but the warmer tones you usually associate with John Illsley suit it better. I think time is about right for a Straits reappraisal. They were bloody great, and much better than the 80s image they've been tainted with would suggest.
20. I never cut strings on Fenders...
21. I've seen a fair bit of chat on Talkbass about this... maybe have a look on there. The quality of Fender actives tends to be a bit flaky. John East they ain't.
22. Too much money.
23. I love these heads so much.. if I had the money, I'd buy another just so I could look at them and smile.
24. Search YouTube for Lakland bass setup. Their guy gives a fantastic tutorial.
