1.
Here's my new (to me) 1970 fretless.
Are those lollipops?
2. On my Precision I use the foam from underneath a Jazz bass pickup. I also have one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mufler-Bass-Guitar-Mute-Jazz-Sound-/130597126010?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e6831ff7a
3. I had the CV Jazz and it was a very nice bass. The pickups could be better and I put some Wizard 64s in mine for a definite but not pricey improvement. However, in the shop playing them I did think the Precision was better - maybe only because I prefer a Precision anyway - but I bought the Jazz because I already had a Precision but not a Jazz.
4. I don't know about Wobble but I often play with one finger if I can. I definitely get a different tone with index finger and with middle finger and much prefer index finger. I think what causes it in my case is that, although I keep my nails extremely short, with index finger I'm playing with finger pad only but with middle finger my nail still catches the string however short the nail is. I never use three fingers.
5.
She was with me when I sold my flying V in Croydon & bought my MIJ tele thinline in Pimlico on the same day, so that was proudly on display - as was the 'empty' case.
Brilliant.
6.
stashing the danelectro longhorn in a telecaster guitar case in plain sight was pretty good. It even felt empty as the bass is so light
Impressive. To work that particular trick is it necessary to own a Telecaster and, if so, where do you hide the Telecaster?
7.
I really fancy a VM Jag SS, but I've already got basses hidden everywhere I can hide a bass & the missus would definitely notice a new candy-apple red one.
What is your very best hiding place?
8. That won't finish up cheap.
9. Shame I haven't got more money or no other plans..
10. The Pino and the Tony Franklin fretless.
11. Yes, where are you and are there any pics? Laminated or solid? Thank you.
12. ... and neither thread in the ebay links forum.
13. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/159715-normans-bass/page__p__1430291__hl__norman__fromsearch__1#entry1430291
14.
If i were you id talk to the other two and see if they want to sack the mouthy one.
So that's a new thread: How do you sack a band member quietly?
15.
You're reading far too much into my question. I'm just curious as to what people consider 'cool riffs' I suppose; and thinking of examples of when they might need to play them. Me personally, I'm not in a band, & I'm too shy to play in front of anyone..
Sorry, I didn't mean to over-read it. If you want something I consider a cool riff then Chris White's line in The Zombies She's Not There. I only say that one really because I was playing it yesterday.
16.
But what about if you go into a shop to try out a new bass then? They'll probably be one or two customers, and the shopkeeper of course. Surely you feel under a little pressure to play something impressive. Or do you just noodle?..
I examine the bass and then play it unplugged. If I like it so far then I'll ask to amplify it. Then I play all the notes on each string to see it it plays evenly. Then I play it with right hand by the bridge, then right hand above pickup, then right hand over the end of neck, etc. I'm checking out the bass not performing for a load of onlookers.
17.
Doddy leaves tomorrow for LA, where he will be playing on the cruise ship Golden Princess, travelling to Hawaii, for four months.
Lovely.
18.
I sent him the tabs earlier
Can I have a copy?
19. Never happened to me either - I lied about Mustang Sally - and if was asked I wouldn't do it anyway.
20. Studio without DIs is bizarre.
21.
A regular performing bassist needs at least three basses. One to play and one as a backup. A backup is mainly needed to guard against a broken string. You can't keep your audience waiting while you restring ........ and besides, one new string in between three old ones wouldn't sound great. Just use the backup bass and restring 'em all when you get home. Also, if you ever need to have one of your basses repaired at a shop, then you'll need to bring the third bass into action. That's not considering the bassists who play different basses to get different sounds ........ fretless etc.
So, if you ever need to have two basses repaired at the same time then you'll need a total a four basses. There's no end to it.
22. I'd say £45 is worth every penny to see a band like TOP close up. I can't bear those stadium/arena gigs, I'd rather put on the CD and look at the CD cover after I've carefully placed it at the other end of the room.
23. Different band, different bass.
24. Say you're leaving but say you're willing to honour all booked gigs and any other gigs between now and the most distant in time gig but none after that date - unless they find a replacement before then, in which case you'll go sooner. They can't ask fairer than that.
