1. That's a bad day for me with family stuff in day and gig later too.
 2. I think this is more common that you might expect. It's the other way around for me. Index finger has a marginally duller/thumpier sound, due to even if my nail is growing a little long it misses the string so I'm only playing with flesh/callous. However, middle finger unless i cut my nail extremely short it will catch the string and so more attack and slightly treblier. For greater evenness of tone, especially on slower 1/8ths or 1/4ths, I do play with one finger.
 3.
Wouldn't it be natural for "Rock Music" as Gene knows it to take a back seat after this long? I mean, Music Hall, Big Band Swing, Rockabilly and any number of other styles aren't in the mainstream any more either.
I work with young people and also have a 20 year old musician son. In my experience, a lot do listen to rock but only as one genre among many. I rarely listen to it myself.
 4. Original packaging is fine. Store in a dry place. But if you wait long enough they will eventually corrode.
 5.
You're quite right. D'Addario are quite consistent - they have one construction, and many variations, like the EXLs, which go from a set of .008 on a guitar, to a set of somewhere around .155 for a 5 string bass. They're all round-wound, nickel plated, on a steel hex core. If you want to use a set of EXLs, but with a lower tension, simply get the next set down.
And D'Addario are one of the few manufacturers who consistently quote tension figures.
 6.
If I remember well; the longer the bass'scale the higher the tension. (this means a lighter gauge of strings 130 -40 will have a lower tension compared of your actual 135 -45 set.) ...
Yes, the longer the string then, for a particular pitch, the higher the tension. However, that is a separate issue to the gauge of the string. Tension is dependent on three things only: (1) Pitch of note (2) Length of string (3) Mass per unit length of string Mass per unit length is dependent on the construction of the string such that if two strings are differently constructed then they can be the same gauge but have different tensions because they have different masses per unit length. ... and tension is not compliance.
 7.
Just need the first user discount applied i.e. find one on BC at sane money.
Yes, I bought mine from Clarky who bought it from ... I don't remember.
 8.
That is one gorgeous bass, now where do I find one?
Now discontinued but the updated version, the TB10, is expected in stock at Thomann 30/09/2014 ... http://www.thomann.de/gb/takamine_tb10.htm
 9. This one is a fully hollow Takamine B10 ...
 10.
True. Though in fairness, the two types of string are very different in a lot of ways, so the "choice" argument is a valid one.
Except it's not about two types/labels of string but many many more than that. Anyway, if you read what I wrote I said 'also' so there was no denial of the so-called 'choice' thing.
 11. It's also down to [s]choice[/s] consumerist capitalism. We mostly have more money so there needs to be a lot more ways of getting your money off you.
 12.
Just respray the black pick guard
... and the black pick-up cover.
 13.
Is this sort of thing recognised in the world of drumming I wonder, or does it just get passed off as the drummer's style. I'm thinking of the difference between, say, Charlie Watts and Keith Moon. One is pretty steady and just laying down a solid rhythm with the odd fill, the other is one long fill.
I read somewhere that when drummer Phil Seamen first heard Keith Moon he said something like: 'Man, you get paid playing like that?'
 14.
If anyone is not sure about flatwounds then just listen to the bass on anything recorded before the mid 1960s as there's a good possibility that's what you're listening to.
Yes, in fact Fender basses were factory fitted with flats until the late 1970s.
 15. There's no substitute for actually trying the flatwounds yourself. Besides which just as roundwounds vary a lot by manufacturer, construction etc. so do flatwounds. For example, Thomastik Jazz Flats neither feel like nor sound like D'Addario Chromes.
 16.
I think thats true of all basses, I bet we could find a genre of most types of music played on most types of bass
Yes. It's a very strange thing, It's often said about Rickenbackers too, one sound only, they always sound like Chris Squire, but actually they also sound like McCartney.
 17. People often say the P does one thing well. But the P does a lot more than one thing, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to sound like both James Jamerson and JJ Burnell on the same bass.
 18. I have a Thomann 22. They are made by Hora in Romania. It's been fine and was playable when it arrived and I would recommend it but I have since spent £100+ on a new bridge, new sound post and setup, another £100+ on new strings, another £100+ on pickup, etc. etc.
 19. Here's Ronnie Lane playing a Harmony in 1968 ... http://youtu.be/8jYgctXpajs
 20. Did you not ask to see photos of the twist before you bought it?
 21.
Well if your under 50 or 40, not liking rock makes sense. I wonder how many 60 plus folks don't like Rock? Blue
I am 62 ... and I know a lot of younger people including teenagers that like 'rock' whatever that is.
 22.
When I read threads like this then, rightly or wrongly, I find myself thinking foot-on-the-monitor bands (often with big hair) driven by the ego of the frontman. I've paid good money to see everyone from The Who and the Stones through to Foo Fighters and Kaiser Chiefs (oh alright, scratch that last one) so I'm not saying that foot-on-the-monitor is automatically a bad thing. At the Hammersmith Odeon or the O2 or Knebworth. I just don't think it works at the Dog & Duck.
So is all that all rock or what? I am confused. It seems to me that rock, like jazz, folk, blues, soul, reggae, hip-hop, dubstep, etc., etc., is too vague and varied a concept to have much of a conversation about without very quickly all talking about different things.
 23.
I guess the term Rock is relative. But I'm thinking; Rock, generally played loud ,usually 3 guitars, bass maybe keys and vocals playing serious riff based rock not the more acoustic music that is popular today. blue
Hmmm, I don't really feel any wiser, except I'm now guessing that I am on the "I don't like 'rock'" side.
 24. It's not at all clear to me what the word 'rock' means in the context of this thread. Stuff I like is referenced alongside stuff I have no interest in whatsoever.
 25. I've been bored of rock for so long I can't remember how long.
