Yeah I've got Hx Native and used to have a Stomp. Helix is good, but it's just not fun for me.

C@Pow_22 Can you tell me if, on the origin effects pedals, the DI (XLR) out is affected by the volume control on the pedal or if it's a fixed output level? The manual is a little bit ambiguous. Cheers

Suggestions for an inexpensive P Bass with a Jazz neck
uncle psychosis replied to Minininjarob's topic in Bass Guitars
Sandberg Electra VS4? It doesn't sound 100% like a passive Fender but it's pretty close... -
Nice, but afraid that just looks like a worse ME-90B to me 🤪 Bass VT DI or Origin Effects definitely still top of the tree. The OE stuff is not cheap though, eh...

Hi guys Before I go and buy a Sansamp Bass VT DI, wanted to see if anyone had any better ideas. I play at home through a powered speaker (Yamaha HS7) so a combined preamp/di box makes the perfect home practice setup. I've got a Boss ME-90B which sounds great but its a bit big for my small office space and frankly I want an excuse for new gear. I've had sansamp gear before so I know roughly what I'm getting but aware there are other bits of gear out there now that do similar things, ie the Origin Effects stuff which certainly looks good. Desirable features for me: 1. Vintage/Classic sounds, in the motown/reggae/edge of breakup indie rock spectrum. If i was a rich man who had a bigger house I'd probably buy a "real" B15 and an SVT and switch between them depending on mood. 2. High gain absolutely need not apply 3. Battery power ideal but not essential. 4. If needs a power supply, dedicated power switch very desirable (i don't like faffing about disconnecting and connecting power to turn stuff on/off) 5. Balanced DI out desirable 6. Volume control that affects the DI out extremely desirable 7. Cab sim on the DI out extremely desirable. Even better if it's switchable/defeatable. The Bass VT DI ticks almost all of those boxes I believe but interested to see if anyone thinks I'm selling myself short...

Would love to. Just got to overcome a 400 mile hurdle to get there 😀

Of course, one of the "interesting" things Fender do to muddy the waters is that the specs always tend to vary across the ranges - the neck shapes are different, different finishes, etc. so it's not that straightforward to directly compare them. I do think at some point in my future I'm going to go on a quest to try some "expensive" Fender J basses and I'm genuinely not sure what to expect. I do worry that none of them will match up the awesome cheapo Vintage (JHS) jazz bass that @mcnach stupidly sold me, then I stupidly sold back to him, then I think he stupidly sold it to someone else 😝

Interesting reading. For my own part, I've never been sure about Japanese Fenders. Some are really good. Others are no better than their Mexican equivalent....

Hi folks Intrigued as to the "consensus" on the forum as to the quality of the "higher end" Fender basses out there. How do things like the American Vintage and/or American Professional II series compare in comparison to, say, a Vintera or Player series model? Where do the Japanese ones fit in in 2025? Noticeably better? Bit better but not worth the cash? Different ballgame altogether? What about custom shop? Whole different conversation? I'm definitely of the opinion that mass produced instruments with bolt on necks definitely have a quality:price ceiling where the diminishing returns get silly but I'm not sure I know at what price point that happens. Obviously the right answer is "go and play a bunch" but I'm interested in your thoughts as well. (FWIW - I'm afraid if its not a Fender I'm not interested, yes there are lots of awesome basses out there that aren't Fender but that's a different thread for a different day).

Basses you hardly ever see for sale
uncle psychosis replied to BaggyMan's topic in General Discussion
It wasn't outrageously heavy, but it most certainly wasn't 'very lightweight' as someone mentioned earlier in the thread. -

If its the same bass (bass direct can't have had too many amber trb5 mkI for sale in the last few years) it was anything but lightweight. I bought it and returned it because I couldn't stand the hiss from the preamp and it seemed like sacrilege to consider changing the electronics. A shame because it was a nice bass. -
Hmmm. I had no idea that the Sonic P basses were J width necks. Given that I'm also on a quest for "something that looks and sounds like a P but plays like a J" and suddenly I'm tempted...

Extend your search beyond music sites - for example a fairly quick search for "fishing box" or "fishing bag" brings up all sorts of usefully sized things

Recommend Me A Fat Jazz Bass Bridge Pickup
uncle psychosis replied to Chewie's topic in Bass Guitars
I really like DiMarzio Area J pickups. -
Discovered his channel recently, and Now I'm reeling from the revelation that "...and out come the wolves" wasn't a P bass - it was a Fender Longhorn Jazz 😮

***SOLD*** I bought this fairly recently from the very lovely Mr @sPiKi but my wife's car has died, I have too much music gear, and after twenty years of playing J basses its very hard to give anything else a fair shot. This Reverend Mercalli 4 is really high quality -- a lovely roasted maple, satin finish neck, absolutely rock solid bridge, huge sounding pickups. But needs must. Its also really light (3.65 kg!) which is an added bonus. Bass is in excellent playing condition, there is some buckle rash on the back (see pics) but nothing that stops this being an awesome instrument. I've got the original box it came in so I can post this anywhere to mainland UK for £555 ***SOLD*** or you can come round to my gaff (Burntisland, Fife) and I'll make you a cuppa whilst you try it out. Alternatively can meet in Haymarket (Edinburgh) during the working week. Yeah. I *think* what I need to do is to jumper the two toggle switches to rule the two toggles out. If I can get it to sound "correct" like that then I might be able to brave trying to get those switches out --- though it will be a gigantic PITA.
-
yeah its definitely not working correctly. One of the settings for the Range basically either produces nothing, or it produces noise. And the hi-lo switch is doing something, but I'm not convinced its doing what it is meant to. I don't know if I can face debugging this. The fact that it partially works means that its going to be extremely hard to work out what is wrong 😢
-
Of course my troubleshooting isn't being helped by there being no easy way to work out which way to set the toggles and rotary to match the original!
-
Thanks, Ped. I definitely think there is something wrong with the Range toggle, but I'm not sure if it's just that analog filters are weird...
-
Its Vactrols. I'm not sure which switch is which - one of my only complaints about Fuzzdog is that he never explains the controls beyond the labels... Here's the layout https://pedalparts.co.uk/docs/MooTron.pdf I'm now pretty confident that the hi/lo switch is working. It definitely does something! I think I need to try plugging in a bass rather than my telecaster to try out the range switch.

Hey folks I have built myself a Mutron III (well, almost --- its is a Fuzzdog bulild that is a combination of elements of Madbean’s updated circuits, the Naughty Fish and the Nautilus). It has the following controls: Master Volume (pot) Input Gain (pot) Peak (pot) Sweep (pot) Range (two-way toggle) Hi-Lo (two-way toggle) LowPass-BandPass-HighPass (three-way selector) I am trying to check that the pedal is fully functional but I need some help understanding the controls and the expected behaviour to debug it --- I'm not very experienced with filter effects. Thw switching is all good and I am able to get some nice filter sounds. But... What I'm least sure about is the operation of the Range and Hi-Lo toggle switches. Here's my "problems": In one of the two 'Range' positions I don't seem to get any filter effect at all. The Hi-Lo toggle switch seems to be very subtle. So, can anyone explain to me like I'm five... 1) what these two controls are meant to do 2) an idiot's guide to checking they're setup right (fundamentally I'm wondering if things aren't happening because my instrument has too low an output, or if I've picked silly settings, etc).
