1. Im here to help. Even if I do take forever to check up on threads Ive posted in.
2. Everything I can think of that price range seems to be with different speaker configurations. Which I guess defeats the object of lightweight somewhat. I can think of a couple Laney combos that are 15" (might be a good thing because as much as I love the sound, they are quiet for their ratings IMO). Other than that, theres maybe the Ashdown Electric Blue (totally different to the Hartke, but maybe a little more like your Trace Elliot) or youre spending a lot more money. Ill let you know if I think of anything perfect.
I didnt realise that the crossover in the heads was at 5 kHz though. Seems quite high to me. I dont doubt you, its just that I have a tweeter in my 4 x10 (which apparently crosses over at 5 kHz) and being as I use overdrive myself quite a bit I turn the tweeter off as it sounds harsh to me.
The GK heads have an inbuilt 'boost' circuit that adds quite a bit of growl and dirt, this is located AFTER the crossover on only the woofer amp. The result is overdriven speakers and a pristine clean tweeter. In other words, it was designed specifically to combat what you mentioned: drive sounding harsh on tweeters. Of course, you can only use the inbuilt boost, which you may or may not like. The effects loop is full range.
4. Just a thought, you say you dont want a coloured DI cos youve got your head. Fair enough but isnt this a backup in case your head goes down? The Countryman Type 85 is indestructible and sounds great, industry standard. Mid-priced to expensive at about £150 in the UK. My fave 'cheap' DI is the Presonus TubePre at about £70. Look around, GAK, KMR audio and the like all have catalogues you can browse and when you see something that tickles your fancy you can ask something more specific. Think about application. Id love something like the Millennia Td1, but in my pop/rock band in a small pub with a cheapo PA system whats the point? All that clarity and fantastic tone wasted, along with my money. Similarly, if you want a pure, uncoloured sound then stay away from the Sansamp, MXR half preamp/half DI camp. HTH, Jack.
5. Some very sweet rigs so far, my little addition: GK 1001 and Neo 212. Thats the gig rig, not shown is the small rig (same but a 112) and the big rig, both cabs powered by the full 1hp from the amp. Super little rig (when I can get away with it) is an MXR M80+ DI. Jack.
