I think I recall reading that early USB incarnations were not recommended for transferring crucial real time data, MIDI or otherwise? Something about it interrupting the data flow to search for newly connected devices. I don't know really... just throwing it out there.

I'm offering for sale the SGC Nanyo SB315 5 string bass I acquired earlier this year. [s]I'm not sure exactly of the model number. Maybe a SB405, maybe a SB315?[/s] It has been suggested in the discussion thread for all things SGC Nanyo (http://basschat.co.u..._nanyo__st__360) that this instrument may have been fitted with an after market pre-amp which has given it an active push/pull knob. Any thoughts on its model number would be welcome. Made in Japan, the serial number has been placed inside the pre amp cavity and dates it to 1991. It has a brass nut and Gotoh hardware. I believe the pups are original purely based the fact that the covers are stamped SGC, (the neck pup stamp has faded). The body has a light scuff marking all over which can't really be seen in the photos. Nothing serious, no dings, its just a well played bass. Pretty good for a 25 year old instrument, I'd give it 8/10. The neck is smooth, slim, straight and stable. I've never needed to adjust the truss rod which is accessed from the headstock. Holds it tuning excellently. It came to me wearing scruffly dirty flats and its now wearing new flats. The frets show its worn rounds at some point in its life, but are also in great condition for its age. In the attached photobucket, the outdoor pictures are when I first bought it, and the indoor pictures are taken this week. Since I bought it I've cleaned it thoroughly, blasted the pots with compressed air, (still a little scratchiness but that's been fading with use), and it's wearing new Status flatwounds. It has J + J pups which is different from the more common P + J configuration. To my mind it has a very clean, cutting, modern sound, (strangely, by modern I mean 1980's). I don't honestly know what all the pre amp controls do, and that's the main reason I'm prepared to move it on. There's volume for each pup and a push pull active passive knob which might also control tone. The fourth knob is a stacked affair which might be an EQ sweep. Like I say, owning this bass has made me realise I prefer something less fiddly. Not the instruments fault, just not the right bass for me at this time. I have no scales so can't tell you the exact weight but, like most instruments of its ilk, it's really lightweight. The lightest bass I've ever owned maybe, at a guess I'd say sub 9lb. This has been my first 5 string bass after playing on and off for 25 years and its been a relatively painless experience. Apart from the expected fumbling over where I was expecting notes to be from muscle memory, I think its a perfect first time 5 string. It owes me £250 [s]and that is the price I'm asking for it.[/s] Any audition is welcome in Plymouth and I will post to the mainland UK for an extra £20. No case or bag with the instrument but I will suitably mummify and double box it for a next day delivery. Check my feedback or PM me for any questions. I'm not offering overseas sales because it has no hard case. Specific photo's are available on request. These basses offer fantastic value for money and I'd be keeping hold of it if it wasn't for being skint, and missing my old passive fender. [s]To this end, I'll entertain a straight trade for a Classic Vibe Squier (60's Precision or Jazz) or perhaps trade up a little for something mexican or more, (but bear in mind that I'm a poor student and broke till September). [/s] No trades now please. Reduced to £200. http://s756.photobuc...yo%205%20String I think that's everything. Thanks for looking.

Here's mine, a Japanese 1991 5 string. Unsure of the model and it's been suggested it has received a new pre-amp because of its push/pull active/passive controls. Lightest bass I've ever owned and maybe the most modern sounding, (or perhaps that was an active Status Shark I used to own). My first 5 string and its been relatively easy to fumble with. Not sure I'm bonding with it though. Not the guitars fault. Its just that I think I miss my simple passive Fender too much.

I once gave away an Ibanez Roadstar II free with a practice amp because it was so terrible, I couldn't sell it.

Thanks. Never heard that and I like it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Uw-9lNl08

Perhaps they got a power drill for Christmas. I got a new one in the post yesterday and I'm sat here resisting the urge to make swiss cheese out of something.

I think this is a nineties case. To the right buyer it's worth more but it stuck out like a sore thumb because it is clearly neither vintage nor valuable.
I don't know... you could try not buying it..?
I've owned a Fender in a case like this and I would never buy one again. The case that is.

This joker is asking top dinero for an entirely unremarkable hard case on the premise of it being well...vintage & original. I know some sellers can get carried away with the hyperbole, dreaming of unrealistic prices for everyday instruments, but for a hard case? http://www.ebay.co.u...mIAAOSwQYZWyDH5 Why does this bother me as much as it does?

Obscure Musical Backwaters - The Great SGC Nanyo Thread
That sounds like a replacement preamp has been fitted. Push pull is probably an active/passive. One will be blend and one volume, the others will be some combination of treble, bass, mids, tone etc. Originally you would have had blend, vol, treble and bass.
Yikes, an extra string and more controls to fiddle with. This'll take some getting used to.
Mine also had Seymour Duncan PU's on an active circuit. Probably a retrofit but hey.
For a moment I thought I'd bought this bass mentioned earlier but it still says SGC on one of the pickup covers. -

It's active but I have no idea what the pots do. One of them is push\pull. Another one is stacked. -
photos would be good
Yes. OK. A new set of strings are on the way and then I'll give it a full clean. The previous owner was an elderly chap with a painful wrist who, although admitted to neglecting it these last few years, had been reluctant to sell it on. Pots are a bit scratchy and there's detritus to clear from all the hard to reach crevices but it'll come good. Feels like one of the better made guitars I've handled over the years. Confirmation of the model would be good. SB315? Very pleased to have picked up one of these yesterday. From the info in this thread I've ascertained it's Japanese, made in 1991 and probably a SB315. In good nick and for the price I paid it seems like I couldn't have found a better bargain. -
Yes it's MIJ & yes, it's worth a punt. Hohners of this era were made by Moridaira and are very nice indeed - some little guy called Rover - or is it Prince? Some dog's name anyway - is quite well-known for playing one of their Tele copies! Hard to tell from the pics but this one is probably mid-late 70s. Later Hohners (Arbor series & early Professionals) were Korean and not to the same standard initially. Jon.
It's gone and I didn't get a chance to bid. Ah well, I hope it's a dog, lol. Thanks for the info. -
It's only a few miles down the road from me, but I can't really warm to it. After all, when buying you also need to think about the possibilities to sell as well. Ironic really, as I'll be in Plymouth at the end of next week, so if you'd wanted it I could have brought it down to you.
Thanks man. -

Don't know if this is Japanese but it's a Hohner P copy and it looks old. Pictures aren't very detailed but it's close to me in Plymouth and pickup only. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hohner-Bass-Guitar-/291715299095?hash=item43eb963717:g:BssAAOSwHxVW8Cwv Wondering if worth a punt. -

Why not grab the mic and tell them all to stop staring at you because it's putting you off. That should fix it. jk. -
This one is curious in that the headstock seems to have been modded . http://m.ebay.co.uk/...973?_mwBanner=1 Good price for a Thunder though
I've been looking for one like that, around that price, but I can't bring myself to want it with such a blatant.... mutilation. -
I've got an organ donor card. In the event of my untimely demise, doctors can transplant any bit of me that's wanted to improve the life of someone else. I won't mind, I'll be dead, but to someone it could be a matter of life or death. I'm like a Fender guitar, unique but similar, there's lots like me. I think of the bits of Fenders that appear for sale here and on ebay as organs that are donated so another guitar can exist. Rather than the end of one guitar, it becomes a vital part of many others. That's only because they are so common, they can be re used. I wouldn't relate that analogy to another guitar which isn't so much in demand. If there isn't a demand for its components, then as a whole it remains worth more than the sum of its parts. I need a lie down now.

Don't know if the forum's seen this before. Attempt at humour matches attempted luthiery. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ShonKy-Firewood-Special-No6-Bass-Guitar-Aged-rustic-/222050656812?hash=item33b340222c:g:XFAAAOSwu1VW4y9C

'Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)' by Tom Waits uses 'Waltzing Matilda' in its chorus.
