  1. 😥 I've just gone back to my EA Doubler afer a brief affair with a Tecamp. The Tecamp was nice and all but the EA is the whippet's wedding tackle for double bass. The only consolation is that the EA amps are built with top quality components so my Doubler will carry on for alot longer than I will.
  2. Back when all gigs were off, I put a lot of time into working on my vocals. I had a vocal mic set up which went into a mixer, along with my bass signal and the song play back. All the output went into headphones which helped me get used to the sound of my voice outside my head. Recording the session helps to find the bits that need work. My biggest advance was realising that I wasn't breathing properly just before I sing, I was effectively holding my breath, or not breathing between phrases, which made pitching much harder. Once I identified that issue and focussed on where the breaths shoud go, tone and pitching became a lot more reliable.
  3. Musima basses are indestructible. No way that's dead.
  4. There's a Greenboy Crazy 8 in the amps & cabs for sale forum at a very reasonable £250. These cabs are very highly regarded for double bass - do a search on the double bass forums on Talkbass for user feedback.
  5. There's a Talkbass thread about it. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/adjustable-soundpost-–-anima-nova.1198813/#post-18233085 I haven't read it in detail but looks like the price is €600.
  6. This was about 20 years ago - its quite likely the Yamaha was my 'spare' fretless at the time. One day I just set it up to play along to some Morphine tunes. As a result of that, I came up with parts for a couple of songs the band were working on, which made it into the live set so I kept the bass as it was and used it live.
  7. Yep. I used an old Yamaha RBX250 fretless with just the A and D strings, tuned a 5th or a minor 3rd apart and the heaviest slide I could find. To get the action high enough, I had to raise the bridge saddles up as far as they would go and run the strings over the top of the nut rather than in the string slots. It all worked well enough for what I was doing.
  8. My guess would be Innovation Braided Orchestral.
  9. I use this with my EA Doubler. It was made by OBBM, following the description in the EA manual Amazon have this balanced TRS jack to male XLR which should work, but it would be worth checking with the vendor to confirm that the TRS connections are wired as per the requirement in the EA manual. https://www.amazon.co.uk/kenable-6-35mm-Balanced-Audio-Adapter-XLR-pins-Stereo-Plug/dp/B008JYF2CK/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=trs+to+xlr+male+balanced+adapter&qid=1632687056&sr=8-3
  10. Legally, you should get permission to use the poem from the poem's publisher as they will (usually)be the copyright owner - if they say yes, then you're good to go. However, if you don't ask and if the track isn't being commercialised then I think it's unlikely that whoever owns the copyright to the poem will a) find out or b) get upset about it. In terms of not being seen to be claiming ownership of something you didn't write, then state in the credits that the poem was written/translated by someone else. If the copyright owner does actually find out AND get upset, then the worst that will happen will be a cease and desist letter. If you haven't been sellng the track then there isn't any money for the publisher to chase, but the solicitors will probably try to charge you for writing the letter.
  11. I have Superflexibles on one of my basses - the colour in the photos looks pretty close. If you're looking for more twang/punch then I'd suggest a set of Thomastik Spirocore Weich. They're not stupid expensive by double bass string standards and if you don't like them, they're very easy to sell on. Another benefit is Spiro Weichs are (IMHO) about as close as you'll get to a 'standard string' in that most players know what they sound and feel like, so 'darker than Spiro weich' or 'lower tension than Spiro weich' are useful reference points that can be used to help you work towards your ideal string set. Other popular choice are Pirastro Perpetual and Evah Pirazzi weich. Both great string sets that you can easily sell on as part of your journey down the bass string rabbit hole.
  12. I had a studio session just after everything opened up. Gear worked fine but when it came to pack down, I couldn't unplug the speaker cable from the cab, no matter how I twisted or pulled the plug. ....I'd forgotten that Neutrik connectors have a little slidey thing you have to pull back to unplug it.
  13. Ah, I see - wasn't fully aware of when the rockabilly revival was.
  14. Or using a wireless transmitter?
  15. Nice! Those 60/70s eastern European laminates are great workhorses.
  16. Our band calendar looks very similar. October, November and December are lookng very busy (for now.....) - we even have midweek gigs!
  17. I can lend you a G and A if you want to try them? They'll be 3/4 though.
  18. Yep. Presto Jazzicato Tungenstens. I'm not keen on the D from this set. There's not much difference in guage between the D and the A, so the D has a much higher tension than the rest of the set. I liked the sound and feel of the G but just couldn't get past the stupid tension imbalance across the set.

    Who?

Is that Ginger Baker on drums?
  20. If it's a general 'if you don't mind not being paid, please come along and play' type thing then fine - it's up to you if you take them up on their offer or not. I do object to events messaging us direct and asking us to play for nothing, but we usualy reply saying that we would love to play for free - will they be supplying a PA, travel expenses and food and drink for the day? I honestly don't think there's any malice or greed behind these requests, most people just have no idea of what's involved in putting a band on. Just before plague, I was a punter at a beer festival where they had a bunch of bands & solo artists playing for free. The festival provided stage but no PA, so each artist was loading in, setting up & soundchecking a seperate PA, plus there was no stage management to make sure bands didn't overrun their set. It was utter facking chaos - the punters spent more time watching bands setting up and breaking down than actually playing.
  21. 'Don't f**k about, just play the f***ing bass' Danny Thompson
  22. two of my favourite bands: X-CNN (Inc Tim Bricheno who was in All About Eve) and Dark Star, who were made out of the remaining members of Levitation
  23. Do they smell of wee and have a tramp living in them? Of course, Digbeth might be all gentrified and stuff now with a nice shiny bus station free of tramp wee.
  24. Just watched the vidoe - not sure if I'd ever watched it all the way through before. F**ing typical - we have to watch 4 minutes of Paul Kossof gurning his way through a solo but as soon as the bass solo comes along, it's off on a frickin' helicopter ride because, y'know, there's nothing interesting happening on stage.
