1.
I like Aerodynes.... Pity i haven't got one though.... I have my stealth Sandberg JJ though.
Are you the Insp.Clouseau of the bass world ? Does your bass sneak up on you (stealthily), and attempt to gain your submission into playing anything it so desires ? If so, read a book titled "How To Wrestle Poodles - and Win !" It may help. Rhino.
 2. I've had my aerodyne jazz for some years now and wouldn't exchange it for anything. My first serious bass was a 1962 Jazz which I bought in 1965 not knowing how much an appreciating asset it would turn out to be. I swapped it for a Gibson EB2 in 1969 - no comment. I have been looking for a fretless bass for quite a while and a fellow bass player, Mr Bassman, suggested that I look out for another fretted bass and have it de-fretted ? So I did, found one in Manchester, a slightly later model with the "strat" type jack socket, but otherwise identical. A friend undertook the "defret" , the result being a bass which feels like my original bass but with a "fretless" sound. I have attached pictures, not brilliant, but clearly showing the difference between "frets" and "fretless" Rhino.

 4.
On a whim, I decided to try out the Thomastik jazz flats that I use on my fretless on my fretted bass. I'm really digging the sound, but I can't quite get on with the low tension on this bass. I like the Thomastiks because they're nice and mellow sounding, with a distinct flatwound sound to the attack, but not too dead and thumpy. Are there any flats that have these properties with a little more tension? Or should I just stick with them for a while and see if I get used to it?
I recently had a set of Fender Heavy gauge (50 - 110) flatwounds fitted by Jim Fleeting to my Aerodyne bass followed by a perfect set up. No rattles, but a very solid bass noise - Duck Dunn etc., etc.,. However, they didn't record too well, too much depth for the engineer to cope with, so he said. So I fitted, all on my own, a set of Elite Stadium , heavy gauge 50 - 110 Roundwounds - excellent. Rhino.
 5.
Hey there. I've been on this forum for a couple of weeks now but neglected to do the whole introduction thing, but I have reconsidered. Better late than never yeah? My name's Charles. I am 18, live in Harrogate, and play in a Harrogate/Leeds based pop band called Thief Taker. (www.thieftaker.co.uk if you're interested) Yes! i know it's a dumb name, hahaha! It's good fun playing with them, it's because of them that I now play the bass. I had been a guitarist since about age 14 or 15. I never got very good. Then one day these guys asked me to come play bass for them, and that was the start of a beautiful musical journey. I've been in that band and playing bass for a year now. Now I really don't listen to pop at all and have developed a taste for jazz, fusion, classical etc. obviously jaco and weather report and other artists of that ilk. I'm now dedicating a lot of time to improving my playing and learning the theory, and am looking into forming a jazz side project. I play a fender jaguar bass, which i hate to say i bought cause it looked cool more than anything else. I'm not all that keen on it. But currently Mike Walsh of Iceni/Zoot is making me a bass, which I look forward to. I really like Hartke amps - don't cost a fortune and sound pretty good. I play the LH500 head through a 115 hydrive cab. Thanks for having me Bass chat!
Welcome, Charles. I know what you mean about the Fender Jaguar, I thought the same but I didn't buy one! Cheers, Rhino. (Aerodyne Jazz bass and Ampeg Portabass 250 amp with 2 x 10" cabinet)
 6.
Need to put some flat wounds on an EB0, its a 30 inch scale i think. Does anyone know where i can find them? Searched everywhere. Could i just used normal scale ones and have most the string wrapped around the machinehead (i really hate doing that)? Cheers Harry
Hi , Try Nu Tone strings in Heanor, Derbyshire 01773 714409, if memory serves me correct, they can make sets to order. Hope this helps. Rhino.
 7.
I may have posted this before but here is some of the best bass guitar ever recorded, contained within these 20 seconds of this clip... 2 mins 25 to 2 mins 45. Bliss, bliss, bliss. Check out the thumb muting and The Hook. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s
You 've made my day. Thank you. Rhino.
 8.
Ok, so I've been hanging around on this forum for quite a while now, and one thing that has always surprised me is that some very 'big' names in bass playing seem to get a fairly hefty bashing from some quarters. Two that spring immediately to mind are Victor Wooten and Mark King, and I seen to recall having read negativity on Pastorius and Flea as well. Without wishing to start a feeding frenzy for those that seem to enjoy slating bassists, I thought that it would be good to focus on bassists that everyone loves, those that can do no wrong. So a couple of nominations from me - Two bassists that I have yet to read a bad word on (I could have missed them of course!) are Pino Palladino and John Entwhistle. Anyone else agree (or not!) with that? Any other nominations?
I agree with you regarding Entwhistle & Palladino Other nominations: James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Jerry Jemmot, Chuck Rainey, and Rocco Prestia . Rhino.
 9. Hi, I try and practice an hour a day for flexibility mainly I've been playing for 46 years and I have slowed down, so an hour a day plus a weekly band rehearsal/recording session is ideal. Look forward to meeting fellow Tykes on Sunday, I'll be with a MarkBass 1 x 12" combo and a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass in black. Cheers, Rhino.
 10. My first bass was a Rosetti Lucky 7 (red) the cost was 21guineas and I was 14 (1963) I wanted to play bass after hearing the Everley Brothers and Chuck Berry, followed by The Shadows, and the Big Three at the Cavern with Johnny Gustafson playing an ice blue Precision through a Fender Bassman (black face). Rhino.
 11.
Why not, the more the merrier: I too have a bass strung with flats, we can compare and contrast....!
Me an' all. Rhino
 12.
I had a bit of a word with b2bm about this topic, his feeling was that everyone bring what they want (even if it means some duplication), as people are bound to set it up differently and it gives an opportunity to contrast and compare. Hope this helps! (Phil, as you are reading this feel free to contribute!)
Good point regarding "set ups" and subsequent playing styles. I'l bring my MarkBass 1 x 12" combo and my Aerodyne jazz bass. (plus Epiphone fretless EB1 and Hercules stand for the raffle) I may have another item, or items, for the raffle, I'll confirm nearer the date. Hours of endless fun. Rhino
 13.
I currently use an Ashdown MK 500 and two custom built cabs, 4x10 and 1x15 (eminence speakers) both with HFH. I think it sounds very good but I am looking to change to something warmer sounding and lighter. I see a lot of you are users of Mark Bass gear and I cannot find anything negative about them. Would I benefit from just changing the head unit or is the 2x10 combo any good? And what could I expect in terms of sound. I only use passive basses now and like lots of warmth. Your help & thoughts please before I part with cash...
I have used a 2 x 10" combo with a Traveller 1 x 15" cabinet and found them warm, loud and light. A friend was so impressed that he bought a 2 x 10" combo and added an EV 1 x 15" cab to run his Wal 5 through rather than his ampeg pre-amp and Chevin power amps. I have just bought a 1 x 12" combo, it is superb and with a Bag End 1 x 15" cab plugged in and the amp cranked up, you may well think Armageddon is upon us! Rhino.
 14.
I have had: Peterson 100w 1x15 wood and 150w 1x15 vinyl 100w 1x12 and 100w 1x12 extension cab wood 100w 1x10 wood They all use the same cabinet. Never had the flight trim version of any size. All have Electrovoice drivers for high efficiency. Very pokey. Compression is kind of 'all or none'. Top lift is useful with teh compressor. The active tone controls do A LOT so you may have to rebalance gain and output if you tweak them mid-set. Never had any trouble with them. The 1x10 is an all-time great upright amp. (An EV 10 is an all-time great driver.) I wonder where I put my fliers...? If I come across them., I'll post full features and such. I swopped an Eminence into the vinyl 15" and it still sounds great. A+ with a Jazz or Precision, A++ with an MM5.
Hi, I 've dug out a photo of a Peterson rig I had years ago - 150watt top and a cab with an EV 15" and an EV 10" - quite heavy. I spoke to Pete Tulett and he told me who built his cabs for him, namely Greyhound Cabinets in Hull, so I rang them and asked if they could supply me with two separate cabs to the same specs as the Peterson. He could, and did, I put the EV's in the Greyhound cabs driven by the G&K, and fitted two Eminences into the Peterson. I eventually traded them in for a Trace Elliot 1 x 15" valve combo - here endeth another chapter in my "How to Spend Money" on "noisy boxes" (quote from a nearest and dearest) book. Rhino.
 15.
Seeing as it's about three minutes from my house (depending on traffic lights) I'd better be there! I've a jazz gig in Bradford in the evening if anyone wants to sit in. Could possibly accomodate a freindly basschappie (if too drunk to drive home!)
Hi, I'll be coming to Harrogate from the Ilkley area, so anybody stuck for a lift either or both ways, is welcome. Rhino.
 16.
As I have the time to do this, and following some encouragement from jake_tenfloors and Yorks5stringer, I am going ahead with sorting out a Yorkshire Bass Bash for February. I have found a good venue in Harrogate. It is a snooker club which has an adjoining events hall. It has a bar, sandwiches, plenty of free parking, no stairs, and we can have it for free on Sundays, noon to 5pm. That's on the understanding that we leave it as we find it and he does some business over the bar (BigBeefChief – that’s your job). The room itself is large and square. It is carpeted except for the wooden dance floor and stage. Gigs are held there. Tables and chairs can be put out whilst rigs can be set up around the edges. So, the only thing to do is to agree a date. Please do the old poll thing above.
Hi, Count me in for the 15th February - I would like to donate a prize for the raffle - namely a fretless Epiphone EB1 re-issue (2001) in very good condition complete with Fender gig bag and strap. See you on the 15th Feb. Rhino.
 17. The two combos you describe sound like the guitar combo. However, I have used Peterson 150watt amps over the years and they are excellent. They usually drive EV 10" units but there are combo's with 15" EV's fitted. John Entwistle tested them in the early days with the combo being hidden from sight and when asked what size of speaker he was playing through, said a 15", and was suitably amazed when he saw it was a 10". They were built by Pete Tulett in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. I had a few conversations with him and he was the man who designed and built Simms Watts gear. I did sell my Peterson 1 x 10" combo to a bass player from Bristol who was keen on forming a collection - I'll see if I can find a contact name and number and get back to you. Rhino.
 18. All items advertised have now been sold - many thanks to all concerned. Rhino
 19. Time for a change - great combo and cabinet, plenty of power, portable, comes complete with custom made covers and speakon cable , gigged twice, no marks or dents. Reasonably priced at £500.00 (ono) payment by cash, cleared cheque, Paypal,- buyer collects - Leeds / Bradford area but would consider delivery within mainland UK for £50.00. Rhino.
 20.
First a bit of background. I've been playing for 35 years, I started as a guitarist and switched to bass in my early twenties. I've been teaching for twenty three years. I did a degree in music back in the eighties and later qualified as a secondary school teacher (something I didn't pursue). I've played just about every style of music, done overseas tours, reading work in theatre bands. I'm pretty well known locally as someone who can step in at very short notice with non reading bands. I've taught hundreds of students over the years and currently teach three teachers of bass and guitar. I cover all the main boards for exams if that's your thing. I've taught at Bradford college, Huddersfield college and at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford where I filled in on two separate occasions for a bassist colleague, Paul Geary who is currently with Nik Kershaw. These days, I teach from home which is in Keighley, West Yorkshire. I have a very client centred approach to learning so lessons are devised around the student and what they need. If you are within shouting distance of Keighley and would like to take lessons then please get in touch either via email or by phoning 01535 672304. P.S. If there are any bass players out there that I've taught over the years reading this, It'd be nice to know how you are doing. Leave a message to say hi. Pete
Hi Pete, Nice to see you are informing the world of your abilities. I have talked to you at gigs mainly about reading - I don't read, but feel that I should be able to after 45 years of playing experience. I shall ring you and we can talk it over. Cheers, Brian (ex Midnight Train)
 21. I change mine when I have had to drastically alter the EQ settins on my amp. Use a string cleaner regularly and boil them in vinegar & water. (once is usually enough) Rhino.
 22.
You're worried? My band is called "The Watermelon Men"
He's not kidding ! Rhino
 23.
This Squier Bronco for me, I got it because it was the cheapest bass I could find .
Rosetti Lucky 7 bass - 21 guineas in 1963 and then in 1965 I went straight to a second hand 1962 Fender Jazz bass, natural sunburst, complete with tweed case and Fender cable. Price ? £100.00. Those were the days Rhino.
 24.
I can recommend Roqsolid and they usually have some discount deals too!
Hear, hear I've used RoqSolid for some time - very good covers. Rhino
 25.
Guys I'm a bit conscious of 'changing horses in mid stream' on this as the other auction seems to be going OK. However if at least 20 b'chatters pledge on here they will buy a £5 Raffle ticket then I'll set it up. It's over to you folks............
I'm up for it , ma vieux pomme de terre !
