I love it when an expert bass player announces "and you can hear that lovely clear piano tone" before playing a few notes that couldn't sound less like a piano if you hit it with an adjustable spanner.
'Piano tone' in this context doesn't mean 'sounds like a piano'. Beats me what it does mean, but I've heard it sufficiently often in relation to un-piano-like tone to know what it doesn't mean Perhaps it does in fact mean "sounds like a Rickenbacker"?
-
... and when you hear pure Ric tone, you recognise it. There's a few seconds of Ric on a Taylor Swift track - I forget which - played with a pic, both PUPs open, and it just screams "RICKENBACKER BASS' at you The only way to get that tone without a Ric is to use a synth, I've genuinely never found another bass that can do it.
I love all this "Rick sound " stuff. Who's? Geddy, Squire, Lemmy, Entwistle, Burton, McCartney? They all use different amps, cabs, live effects, studio effects, strings, techiques etc. Live sound, throw an (undoubtedly excellent) engineer in to the mix ( ) I can get most P's to do a passable Rick sound IF SUCH A THING really exists.
Yep, fair points Karl, but the Ric sound does exist. In purest form - noFX, tone wide open - it has a pipey quality, especially from the front PUP (it's what Macca's mid-era Beatles tone was defined by). Yes, plenty of players have used a lot of amplification and effects to extend that tone, but I think there's something about the core of that tone that led those players to use Rics in the first place. Let's face it, it certainly wasn't ergonomics
Imo, only a Rik will get you there. It is a unique sound, combination of pups, neckthru and woods I had one but didn't really get on with it, like a lot of others on here have. I now use a faker that is easier for me to play lighter, cheaper, sounds a bit different (tho with the neck pickup isolated it gets close) and I just prefer it to the real thing, there you go.
That's the truth of it, there's tricks to getting one Ric sound for sure, for example Squire's, Maccas etc, but to get all of them, which all Rics can do because despite what people say, they are extremely versatile instruments, you'll need a Ric. IME there is no instrument that has quite such a unique set of tonal characteristics.
I have a dominator 25 bass in mint condition. It sounds great, goes surprisingly deep and can do glassy if you like. Can go fairly loud but really it's only a practice or recording amp. Anyone still use one? One issue, it vibrates somewhere in the cab at higher volume. Looks a nightmare to investigate anyone know how the front grill comes off. Really it should of had some extra reinforcement in the cab, especially since the head is nicely suspended with suspension which is something all combos should have! Should I go hell for leather trying to find the rattle or just plug it into another cab. As I don't want to destroy the cab.
I recently picked up one of these, largely on a whim, and have to say that having played it for the first time last night, I could not be happier, the tone is to die for and absolutely effortless. Having owned many amps over the years, including a B-15, the bass was just that little bit creamier and smoother, without that brittle edge that often creeps in with Ampeg. Adding to the experience was the fact that I was playing what amounted to a total investment of £700, a Yamaha BB1200 into the WEM, and suspect I might have at last found the tonal magic bullet/holy grail/nirvana etc etc! Who would have thought it eh So, in answer to your question above, I would persist, find the fault and enjoy a lovely piece of early 70's British magic.
Thank heavens I have one already ! Looks a steal and from a legend on this site !!!! FYI Im still coming to grips with the monster that was your 55 Heavy Relic P Bass !!!!!
That '55 is pure magic and a hell of a surprising beast isn't it John? Glad you're enjoying it mate And yes, having just checked the surprisingly high prices these go for on eBay, the J-200 is something of a steal, thanks C
Geeez, that 4/4 is a monster. It must rattle the neighbor's windows
Ha ha, it is. It's huge, and is known as 'The Beast'. The guy who recently did some work on it said he'd never seen such a big DB, and he's worked on a fair few in his time (he was pretty pleased to get it out of his workshop, I think it was scaring some of the 3/4s). I had to buy a custom H-clamp to get a mic on it as well, even the standard 4/4 model wasn't big enough. It's strung with guts and has a glorious and effortless tone, bass just oozes from it. If the Stentor is quite versatile and almost hifi, I'd liken the Beast it to a Precision strung with flats with the tone slightly rolled off through an old tube head and a Mesa 2x15 I have to say though, it's a b*****d to move around, doesn't not go through doors easily at all, and only just fits in my car. Is it worth the hassle? Hell yes -
Why that's a very very kind offer good sir Wish I'd known that before ordering my set. Still haven't arrived - don't think they've even been dispatched yet.... Just wondering why you didn't like them too? Cheers all
I'll send you a set and you can answer the question for yourself Marc
You're not interested in a teacher? To be honest, that is the most obstructive statement ever. I bought an upright after many years of bass guitar. I taught myself. Due to my pig-headedness, I now have arthritic and deformed knuckles on my left hand. I eventually figured I needed a teacher, but the damage had been done. Don't worry about strings, use the money for lessons.
I think that's quite a rude comment. The attitude in question is not in the least obstructive, it is simply a statement of how the O/P wants to go about things. You may have damaged your hand through bass playing, although given there's no control group for these things, it may have been caused by bass playing, made worse by bass playing or actually have nothing to do with bass playing - you could simply have an existing disposition to this kind of condition. Either way, I'm sorry to hear about your injury. However, there are thousands of self-taught musicians who manage to play competently and without injury, and sometimes do so better than their well-taught counterparts. Certainly whether taught or untaught, like athletes and performers generally, musicians need to monitor both pain and movement quality, and take action if either appear to be worsening, and it's perhaps that, not the source of technical learning, that is the key factor in injury prevention.
It was the string! I took it off and it had the tiniest of kinks in it.
Happens a lot more than people think, and whilst you can get away with it on fretted, it can cause a lot of problems on fretless (even at the 12th on the E where of course only Jaco has ever really gone), and worse still on DB where it not only causes problems for tone but can present a noticeable hump in the string. I've only ever had it once on a new set of strings, but a few times with strings bought used.
Did you ever try the pickup output on the MK-35?
I did, and that's in part why it's staying and the J-200 going Greg. For me the amplified tone of the MK-35 (albeit through either an Avalon U5 or a REDDI) is spot on. The J-200 sounds glorious through both of course, and far more impressive soloed, and I would of course like to keep both, but the MK-35 is simply my go to guitar, and £2000 is a lot to have sitting around unplayed
Jazz sold pending the usual
Well the Jazz has sold but is still available - let's just say that the gentleman in question bought one more bass than he should have done! So, this increasingly rare and rather special Jazz is up for sale again and at a price that is considerably lower than it is to be found in other places (I've seen them going for £400 more recently). It's boxed and ready to go, pay today, and it could be with you for your Friday night gig -
Just don't use the 12th fret on the E Seriously, I've three FLs and they all have similar idiosyncrasies, I just work around them. Adds to the mojo C
Unsurprisingly (given the trading history between me and Chris) this was mine until earlier this year, and it's a truly fabulous guitar - the responsiveness to touch, clarity, and depth of tone are simply breathtaking. There's a couple on the Vintage & Rare site for close to £3K, so this is a great price for a legendary acoustic guitar, in collectors grade state with OHSC and case candy. Stetson optional
Ha ha, and mine before that Thanks Greg, hope all's well mate, and as you can see, the MK-35 won after all, there's something about the middy tone of it that just works with DB really nicely, whereas of course the J-200 has a great bass tone all of its own. Fancy a trade for a Gibson Mandolin
There was NOTHING like this around when I wanted my first DB! Total bargain
Thanks Pete, always the way isn't it, and it was the same for me when I started out, the only basses for sale were either £300 firewood or £3000 German flatbacks! Having said that, I learned on £300 firewood and whilst it probably slowed me down a little, it meant that I can really appreciate it when I come across a decent instrument. It occurred to me today that I would take a cheapish ply 4/4 in PX for this, probably up to £600 in value (of course the chances of anyone having one are slim but thought I'd mention it anyway). C -
The King of acoustics, simple! I won't go into lengthy details, I can add further info in response to any questions (please ask in the thread as opposed to by PM). I love this guitar but - despite the fact it's the guitar equivalent of a dogs' home mongrel - I love my MK-35 even more. I tried to sell the latter here http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry3068780 but when push came to shove couldn't part with it, so this J-200 has to go. Forgot a few important details, it's fully carved spruce/maple 3/4 size, but the narrow upper bout makes it feel smaller. It's also extremely portable (in fact I'm quite happy to pop up to that London on the train to hand this over if needs be). It comes with its original soft case. Speaking length 40.5, Board length 35.5, Upper bout 19.0/7.5, Lower bout 25/8.0, Height 70.0 And an indication of its size relative to my new (and rather well proportioned) full-size bass .... I bought this almost unused from Muzz a few months ago when I found myself needing a stand-in bass for a few gigs whilst my new 4/4 was being fettled! I'm a complete instrument snob so assumed that being mass produced it wouldn't be up to much. However, it's probably one of the best DBs I've played let alone owned, extremely resonant with great sustain, extremely well engineered and robust with high quality hardware, very very easy to play (I can play this for hours whereas I can play my 4/4 for about 45 minutes before my fingers struggle), and beautifully finished. The Animas, which are almost new, just add to the tone, class and playability. Sale only. List price is £2750, street around £2250, so £1200 is a bargain, especially with the Amimas (having said this I can't find anyone who has them in stock at present). More details and pics to follow later. The advantage of the Heritage B-15s is that despite being rated at 25/30w, they are monstrously loud, too loud in fact for my home studio, hence my selling mine and moving to an old 70s' WEM that despite being rated more powerful is far far far quieter.
