1.
Moniack Mhor creative writing centre in the Scottish Highlands, three miles from Loch Ness. I did a five day residential song writing course run by Boo Hewerdine.
Just had a look at their website. Looks great.
2.
I've done a few songwriting courses (the week long residential course I did in January was undoubtably the best week of my life - absolutely magical!) & have found it to be really exciting & fulfilling, especially collaborating with other writers.
Where was this ?
3. Yep, I've written 5 albums so far, music, lyrics and arrangements too.
4. Its the same with people who give names to their instruments - I'll never understand that.
5. Let the music speak for itself. If you feel the need to get a bazillion views on your vid then maybe you're missing the whole point of playing music.
6. Right, here's the rub with drummers in London. 1) you need a place big enough to store a kit, or at least a practice kit - not easy in London unless you're minted or live with parents 2) You sort of need transport - very expensive in London. 3) They need to have practised a fair bit to be half decent - see point 1 4) Lesson are very expensive for someone hoping to take up the drums in London - at least £20 an hour. 5) with the shortage of drummers in London, there'll always be a band asking them to join, so hence the non-reliable / I wanna leave the band attitude. So you see, the odds ain't really stacked in your favour there.
7.
What happens if you turn up to play and not all your 20 fans turn up? What if you get 10. Do you not play? This happened to the lad's band in a venue in London, they played, nothing came of it.
See my previous post.
8. Treat it as a free half hour rehearsal. Don't tell your mates if you don't want to and just turn up, do the gig and leave. If they ask you where your 20 mates are, tell them they're round your house giving your mother a seeing to.
9. I had my photo taken with REM once. That's me in corner.
10. Anyone else fancy this ?
11.
As usual with these sort of things they simply ask people at the door who they've come to see. Barnet, who runs the night, is one of the good guys and doesn't turn over bands for a quick profit.
Exactly right on both counts. They go out of their way to be fair to the bands and not act like complete arses when it comes to giving bands a fair deal. Thanks for the interest so far.
12. Anyone? this is a great venue and should be packed out with Chris Pope's band.
13. Any mod / indie / guitar type band wanna gig in London next Saturday 19th January let me know. A promoter mate of mine does a night down the 12 Bar in Denmark Street and they need a band to support Chris Pope from The Chords' band. You'll get 40% of the door money that you generate, the backline is provided *just drummer needs to bring breakables and you bring guitars*. If its a good night you'll get a bit more cash your way too. They're specifically looking for Indie / Mod type bands, so Jazz, Metal, funk etc. probably won't cut the mustard to be honest. PM me if your band is interested.
14. Used to have one of these - pretty versitle as it goes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr8kdWpB3U4
15. I've been working on this song in my home studio for the past few days. Its a cover of Vinnie Stigma of Agnostic Front's song "Hard Living". I'd like some advice on the mix please: Text Mix - Hard Livin' I'm still not 100% happy with the bass sound, I'd rather have a much more ballsier valve, slightly overdriven sound but just can't seem to get it with my valve Trace Elliot combo. The bass is a mix of DI and mic'd cap (Shure SM57). Any input gratefully received.

17. His name was Paul Power belive it or not (same as the old Man City captain). Really good bass player too, could sight read anything and played double bass in orchestras too. He still does a bit now and uses an old Wal bass. Only problem is he's an Arsenal fan
18. Well ... that was pretty conclusive ! Quarter Pounders it is ! Thanks for all the replies fellas. Fuzzbass2000 you have a PM mate.
19. Any suggestions for the best replacement pickups for a P bass for playing Punk / metal / hardcore stuff ? I have a budget of around £80. I have tried the Kent Armstrong Hot Vintage Ceramic pickups on an old P bass which really sounded nice but wanted to know if there was any other opinions out there.
20. Fella how drinks in my local was once the bass player for The Boogie Brothers who were in the 1980s one of the first Blues Brothers tribute bands. He was gigging regularly to packed out venues. He left them a good while back now but really enjoyed his time with them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07NlFovY4GU
21. BUMP!!
22. Ashdown 1x15 any good to you ? Same as this: http://www.promenade...5-deep-bass-cab cash on top if need be.
23. I'm selling my Traben Chaos Core 5 String as I'm playing more guitar these days and already have two Traben John Moyer basses so grab a bargain. I got this imported from the U.S. at some considerable cost and have not been disappointed with it at all. I've recorded two albums with it and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp really sounds great for rock, hardcore, metal and punk. The heavy bridge really gives it a big sound and the Rockfield pickups really sound great (why they've never made replacement bass pickups in this range is beyond me). The 5 string neck is wide and flat yet really comfortable. Its set up nicely and its never let me down. Specs are: BRIDGE chaos internal bridge SCALE 35" NECK CONSTRUCTION bolt on PICKUPS two rockfield® humbuckers ELECTRONICS Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp CONTROLS three-band eq with volume and five-way switch BODY Royal Paulonia TOP burled maple or quilt maple FRETBOARD Rosewood NUT synthetic I don't have any pics at the moment, but to give you an idea of what it looks like: Not really interested in trades but would consider an good Explorer type guitar (not Epiphone!) Postage will be around £25.00 or you can pick it up from North London. Doesn't come with a gig-bag or case but I'll pack it well if posted.
24. I like the look of these but I don't know how Rickenbacker haven't come down on them like a ton of bricks.
