Kitten Cake is a cool name - BUT - after misreading the subject line, I've decided Live Kitten Cake is even better. Will give the songs a listen though anyway.

... the more I look at the spec for that Tascam US-122, the more I'm tempted to get in there and buy it myself.
-
Ok I don't understand. You said you had a budget of up to £200 but that Tascam is pretty much perfect for you and only £75? Your alternatives are to give the super cheap options a go. E.g. http://www.dv247.com/invt/32730/ + http://www.dv247.com/invt/14758/ = £45. Remembering to install ASIO4ALL to stand a chance of using the audio interface (apparently) at low latency. I use the Uno MIDI device daily and it works fantastic btw. MIDI input can possibly be had a little cheaper on Ebay. Audio interfaces with the inputs you need (including midi) are usually more than that Tascam.
However, i asked the guy in my local guitar shop, they told me i can not use a normal DI to record, they told me i need something like a LINE 6 POD Studio UX1. I don't know what is it. They said i can use a cable connect it with my bass and then use USB to connect the POD to laptop.
They're just trying to flog you extra gear. The PODs are kind of an audio interface, DI and effects suite in one package. Personally, I'd try OldG's suggestion about using the line/mic in first and then look at getting a half decent (but cheap) audio interface. I have a feeling the Pods are a bit guitar specific, whereas a good interface would be more flexible. Apologies if I'm underestimating the PODs, I've not actually used one first hand.

I believe a DI is perfect for recording. You'll have GarageBand as part of your Mac installation - and as much as I don't like the thing, I've heard a lot of decent tracks come out of it so you might as well start there. You'll want a little USB/Firewire audio interface. You might want a keyboard/digital piano/trigger pads etc. depending on what you're going to be doing. What are you aiming to achieve?

Yup. I'm in. Might actually have a bass worth bringing along too. Would hate to turn up empty handed.

For free (kinda) I can recommend Reaper. I've used it for a long time running off a memory stick so when at work (and noones looking) I can have a muck around using some soundfonts for instruments. On an installation with more storage, you could use proper VST/VSTIs etc. for good sounds. Works fine with ASIO etc. etc. and has full audio and midi recording blahdeblah. Basically, the core of what you need. Edit: There's also the studio on every disk of Computer Music magazine which is ok. I think those two options are better than the packages you would be buying for less than £100 so save your money unless you want to go higher end. You can always use those £££s to buy virtual instruments (like Drumkit From Hell for drum sounds) Edit: If you decide to buy something at any point - Sonar is the way to go. Or Ableton Live, I like that one too for different reasons.

Bah Its not there - I could have sworn I saw it recently. Found Pinball Wizard, Baba O'Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, Happy Jack and My Generation but no Real Me. Sorry mate.
That's the one. I'm not the world's greatest reader but that completely baffled me. If you can send me a copy I'd be really grateful mate. Cheers.
I'm pretty sure I have it at work so will look and [fingers crossed but I'm 87.3% certain its there] post it first thing tomorrow morning.

If noone can get you it sooner, I *think* I have a transcription (guitars and bass) from Guitar World years and years ago which I could send over tomorrow. I'm assuming you're on about the one from Bass Guitar Magazine a month or two ago - they totally messed up the print and ruined the intro.

Why did you marry that stupid *****? Of course you need a new bass, you're a bassist. Its what bassists do. Edit: I think I saw the poll mentioned by Wot, didn't someone here have like 19 basses?
-
I don't know whether its a £££ thing, but surely it would be better to get in there, record and see what happens? Maybe the stuff will turn out great; maybe you'll decide its good enough to use but will plan to do it again later; or maybe you won't want to use it. You won't have lost anything except a few quid to find out.

On the spur of the moment I tuned to C last night on my el cheapo bass. Expecting it to sound and play awful but it didn't - in fact, its arguably better than in standard. Don't know where any of the notes are but hey...

He never struck me as the type to really worry about stuff like that.

Thanks Fly, that's really helped. I've always been more of a software and midi guy so there are some big holes in my knowledge of hardware/amplifiers etc. Now there's one less. Sorry to jack the thread. To answer the original I have one pedal - a fuzz which goes into the front.
