Did you buy it and is it any good as I'm in the same position you were It Looks Fantastic. If Its any good I'm off to Newcastle to buy one tomorrow
Ring them first. Aside from the price flying through the roof - I rang round a fair few shops in the UK and noone actually had one. Including Soundslive who despite advertising it on their site, actually had none; and didn't know if they could get any as there are problems with Schecter's UK distributor - think its gone into administration. Long story - I think I created another thread about the woes. I'm glad in a way, with a current price of £420, by all accounts you can get a lot better basses for the same cash. Before the exchange rate went crazy, you'd have been paying £250 max for this same bass. It sells pretty cheap in the states. I might try and get one in the future, but not for that kind of money.
if you want a Stilletto Sub, theres a gorgous black one in my local shop(telford) for a good price.
Its a good job I don't live anywhere near you or I'd be down there to "try" it. I know GAS would get the better of me if I actually had one in my hands.
really a 5'er takes care of all those evils and leaves you a G string....
I can see the point in them... just, well... if I didn't have a bass in E then the G would probably be needed, but outside of lessons I could live without a G. I can't say I'm (yet) someone who uses a huge amount of high notes. Everyone's input has been really appreciated and has been food for thought. If I look at things objectively, I'm not in desperate need to fix this problem so have time to think and work out the best way forward for me. Still trying to decide what I want to do on this. New strings. New 4, or give in to the evils of a 5. Indecision could be an issue here sooner or later.
Also i agree with the 5 string idea. If you like having the low B then you should definetly think about getting one, i did and i never looked back. I'm even thinking of getting a 6 now.
I'm not quite sure why but I'm pretty resistant to the idea of a 5. I should probably take the next opportunity I get to try one. BTW A 6 is a gu*tar.

Too many strings. I'm in love... (http://www.exoticguitars.com/skeletar.html) Why can't this be a bass?!?!?!? WHHHYYYY!!!!
if my pc soundcard is just a basic motherboard one its going to limit performance, latency and sound quality?
To pick those three in order... Yes very much so, yes indeed, and yes to an extent depending on what quality you're after and how "good" the card is. From your aims, you sound pretty serious about doing all this so a proper audio interface will be the way to go. I'm afraid to say this, but you're probably also going to want some studio monitors (not the big things you use on stage) unless you have a good quality hi-fi you could run the output through. They say you should never mix through headphones, but there is that option if you had to. Noone ever said all this computer recording/production lark was cheap; but it is fun.
-
An alternative would be to see if Audacity lets you record your soundcard's output (not using any cables, it does it all internally). I could describe how this works tomorrow (from work) but the Linux version I have here is different. Anyway, you'd run Amplitube standalone (so you could hear the effect etc.) and then let Audacity take a copy of whats being sent to the soundcard. That might depend on how Ampltube is talking to the card and what card you're using. Sorry, this possibly isn't as simple as you would have hoped.
-
Well... whilst I've recorded in Audacity, I've never dealt with VST plugins in it, so may not be the best person to advise. I think you need the VST Enabler http://audacityteam.org/vst/ first. Then configure your recording source device in the Audacity preferences. Um... then it depends on whether you can use Amplitube live (perhaps not). You might have to just hit the record button to record your bass, and then add Amplitube in as an effect afterwards. Since unlike a sequencer, I don't think you can setup a new track with effects and then record into it. Audacity tends to create new tracks when you hit record. A sequencer would be better for you, but there's going to be a learning curve.
-
Well it comes with a VST interface so any app with a VST host should work. i.e. Just about every sequencer known to man e.g. Reaper, Sonar, CM Studio (from the free dvd with Computer Magazine), even Cubase (if you must). Or if you just want a "simple" sound editor which will let you record your bass through Amplitube then Adobe Audition and Audacity (with a vst plugin) will work. There's loads more. Edit: Good list of VST hosting apps at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/HOSTS_VST/
I only have a pretty standard soundcard built into my Dell motherboard. I have no idea if I need an 'external soundcard' but I'm assuming the above interface is not a soundcard?
There's a yes and a no to that question. It is; but its not what you need and is really for people who's only concern is getting a signal from their guitar to the PC.
I want to be able to record multitrack on the pc with synth drums/softsynth keyboard, bass, guitar, as well as use software such as Guitar Rig, etc. to model amps and effects. Any advice would be cool as I'm pretty much a novice at this thing.
You're going to be after a good USB 2 or Firewire (take your pick) audio card. You don't need to spend a fortune; but should get something decent. Especially considering the money you'll be spending on sequencers, plugins and Guitar Rig. No point cheaping out on the interface.
there are a lot of 34" basses with BEAD...and G stringing...5 strings i cant see why you would need a 35" just get the gauges right and attend to the nut
Cheers mate. I've been having a look around at possible strings to give this a whirl - only taperwounds I've found have been £40. Ok its cheaper than a new bass... but still. Although, I have just taken another peek at the beast and everything looks ok except for needing to widen the nut slots; and I'm a little concerned about the saddles (hoping thats what you call them) on the bridge. How snugly should a string fit in those groves? I think a .130 would just be balanced on top rather than actually sitting in there.
And I have no idea what chords I used in any of those pieces. I just plonk my hands down until it makes a nice noise!
Ok you get extra points for that. I wouldn't have realised you didn't have any idea what you were playing.
-
I have to ask mate, did the bloke off Flog It play drums for the Quireboys at any point? Or is it just another Bob Holness tyle rumour?
Bob Holness was in the Quireboys?

Ugh. I hate virus scanners - assuming you got it from Audacity's sourceforge site or a reputable download place then I'm amazed you had a problem.
To be honest, a lack of substance is not actually a bad thing for these pieces. They need firmly to fall into that "aural wallpaper" category! It's all about the atmosphere.
Yeah definitely. And the atmosphere I liked. By lack of substance I only mean that I couldn't really hope to judge your piano ability on the basis of the parts in those tracks. I didn't mean it in a bad way.

No band. *sob* *sob* But then I am crap so hey...
-
Quite right! I'm being pointed in the direction of Audacity freeware. Anybody used this, please?
Yes, I use it a lot both on Linux and Windows. Its quality. But like Audition, its really a sound editor with some multitrack features; not a music production centre. However, if all you're after is to record rehearsals and don't need to do fancy mixing or effects etc. (it has some though) then it'll be great.
It's very difficult for me to tell if it sounds "child like" on purpose, or it just sounds like a rubbish piano player.
Neither really. Listened to Colder, Duce Muertos and Curious. I liked the atmosphere (particularly on Colder) but with regard to the piano, I don't really know what to say. There's not enough substance in the piano parts to comment on as you're only really using the instrument for chord progressions, I didn't hear much of a melodic/lead role in there which is where it'd be particularly noticeable if it was child like, rubbish or genius. Heard a few little right-hand piano fills which, with the exception of the 1 note in Colder (appeared occassionally and personally I found a little irritating), didn't have enough about them to actually judge. I don't want to sound too negative or apathetic, just thought I'd offer my perspective on the piano. Also, I don't think spooky is as easy as you might think - guys like Elfman make it sound so simple but I used to bash my head against a brick wall trying to get similar results.

Never seen a violin bass in black before... That would look so good on me, why do I never have £300 lying around to feed impulse purchases. *sigh*

The Bassment (Transcriptions in TAB/Notation)
Eight replied to Simon's topic in Theory and Technique
You don't like Jamiroquai then? The old stuff is pure groove dude!
Its not my cup of proverbial - but I've nothing against them really. From memory, you're probably right about the groove, I might force myself to have a go with some of your transcriptions - even if I don't like the track I'll probably still learn something from playing a few. No doubt you'll post something I'll love. You're already a favourite site just for posting modern stuff with actual notation instead of just tabs. -
You'll only find a few Jamiroquai transcriptions there at the moment,
LMAO. I right clicked on your link to open it up in another tab while I was reading your post. When I got to this bit I just instinctively closed the window down without looking at it. I since changed my mind had a quick peek - looks like its going to be a great site. Bookmarked accordingly.
