We built a wall in the North to keep such people out... oh wait I'm on the wrong side of it!

I love DR Sunbeams (but find them expensive now) but as to fitting them to a bass for sale in a shop... no and no again! If you 'have' to fit new strings to help sell it, try taking strings off a bass you have and swapping them. Alternatively, Thomann do a set of strings for £4.15 or there is an ebay seller knocking out cheapie sets for about £5.

Eyes closed the Natural 79. Thanks taking the time to do that, very interesting.

Do maple necks get more stable with age?
warwickhunt replied to 2020Jazz's topic in General Discussion
I've no science to back me up here but my personal experience and common sense indicates that the lighter the neck wood is (weight/density) the more it seems to flex with changes BUT so long as it is good quality timbre it flexes within the tolerances that the truss rod can take up. -

Assuming we are talking about a neck made from wood, properly seasoned neck from a reputable company, then a neck shouldn't need more than the odd truss rod tweak to compensate for environmental changes or set up/string gauge changes. Necks can and do continue to season/change and react to their environment as they are a natural material but referring to my first point IF they are well seasoned in the first place, all of the vagaries of wood structure changes should have happened. You also need to factor in that some necks have carbon rod inserts, multi-laminate construction to support each other etc. Saying all of that... the slimmer the neck (especially one piece necks) the more likely it is to be affected by temperature/humidity changes and need tweaks. I had a top drawer USA Sadowsky with a very thin neck which infuriated me as it didn't need much of an excuse to flex and need fettling. I will stress that I had the bass set up with a silly low action and the neck never ever twisted or reacted in any way other than to bow/flatten which could be tweaked with the truss rod wheel (the best tweakers invention ever). Conversely, some of my Warwick basses (not particularly thick necked at all) with laminate bubinga/wenge construction have never budged in 30 years... unless I've gone for a big change in string tension (and even then sometimes no change). In 100 years your neck might have developed further but it still shouldn't affect set up... now 'tonal' change is a different can of worms. LOL -
Good Deal on an old Squier PJ?
warwickhunt replied to yorks5stringer's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Not being funny but I'll eat my hat if that is 7 1/2lb. The body wood is essentially pine and I've not known them be that light. -
Do you know the year of manufacture? My 82/87 5th Anniversary.

Shipping instruments to the US - worth it or too risky?
warwickhunt replied to Beer of the Bass's topic in General Discussion
As Owen has said, get some costs off couriers before proceeding and potentially wasting time. I checked on a short scale bass to the States the other week and it was almost £300 (through Interparcel) that was £250 insurance cover... not £500 as in your case. Add the taxes at the other end made the deal an absolute none starter. -
Indeed. I found an old band diary (paper) from 25 years ago and we were averaging £240 for pub covers... it's essentially the same fee now but I play in a 3 piece band rather than 4 - 6 piece!
-
They are notorious for splitting and dropping off... slightly worse than Warwick's chocolate jack sockets!
-
As a 3 piece on average we get £250 for pub gigs (no size differentiation) and are based in the North East. We are self contained so no need to hire in PA, lights etc.

Excellent spec and nice playing bass. This plays and sounds a lot better than than the price tag! The body is a nice 'tapered' shape that is very comfortable and ergonomic, also shaving weight off. Electronics - vol / pan / bass / mid / treble, active/passive switch. Pups are factory fitted Nordstrand PJ pups but the rear is an oversized Jazz humbucker so beefy enough to be perfectly useable when soloed (unlike many PJ sets). 38.7mm nut width... skinny No damage or marks that I can find and even the strings are reasonably bright/good. Only point of note is one or 2 tiny nicks in the headstock but barely visible. It will come with a basic/rough gigbag but if shipping it'll be well padded. I'd take a U5 Sire bass in trade or a short scale Musicman. Happy to ship it if the buyer pays full insured courier costs. 'Possibly' take a trade on it to which I could put cash but... PLEASE do not message me with bits of kit that at I can clearly find on BC / eBay / FB for £200 and tell me it is worth £500, I'm not daft and I know how to search for relative values. Likewise '1 off' custom orders that you may well have paid £3000 for but sadly the average bassist values at £500, I can't give you £2000. Sorry it is better if I'm just up front about it rather than waste anyone's time. I'm partial to a light weight bass so anything that you 'estimate' to be over 9lb (and will likely be 10lb+) isn't of interest. Be sure to message me with offers and not directly on this thread.

I'm going to be controversial and say this bass has 'probably' got the best feeling and playing neck of any bass I've tried in the longest time... and that includes instruments costing x10 as much! I'm almost tempted to keep this purely for that aspect alone and to find a lighter body (the reason for the sale) to marry it to. This plays and sounds a lot better than than the price tag! Electronics will be Marmite but you can just play it passive and tbh when I'd dialled in what I liked I just left the controls alone. Upgraded to Grover tuners. Thru body stringing. 40mm nut width. No damage or marks that I can find and even the strings are reasonably bright/good. Only point of note is that the battery cover doesn't lock so it is held closed with tape. It will come with a basic/rough gigbag but if shipping it'll be well padded. I'd take a U5 Sire bass in trade or a short scale Musicman. Happy to ship it if the buyer pays full insured courier costs. No you won't. I've bought from Thomann twice this month and they clearly state no extra fees and that has been the case for me; what you see is what you pay.

This is NOT what it appears to be and it does NOT have EMG pups in it. My dabble into 5 strings is sated and this may as well go. This plays and sounds a lot better than it should... it genuinely does! Obviously it doesn't have book matched timbers (they are stained) and the inlays aren't super quality pearl/abalone but it is a solid timber (not ply) and the neck is a real pleasure with a really nice low action. In fact a BCer came to buy my combo and brought his top of the range Sandberg and he was frankly amazed how well this played. One point to note is that the nut is 46mm wide and the string centres are 8.3mm apart. To me (not much experience with 5's) the spacing is close but very playable but I'm sure I've read that some necks are much wider. Happy to ship it if the buyer pays full insured courier costs. 'Possibly' take a trade on it to which I could put cash but... I predict that you are wrong. There have been examples in the past of physically larger cabs (sometimes with less drivers), BFMs cabs are 'designed' and are about as small as you'd want/can go. Sadly 90% of bassists buy with their eyes not their ears or brains. Little boxes with as many drivers crammed in, is what will sell and if the manufacturers (not often spending a bean on 'design') can do it with the least amount of cheap materials then guess what... you end up with 4x10 cabs with a frontal surface area 2" wider than the 2x10" drivers (and no deeper or higher).
