Tom Petersson and His Massive Cheap Trick Sound
warwickhunt replied to ChWillie's topic in General Discussion
@12stringbassist will be along shortly. I've got more than a passing appreciation of him as I'm in a Cheap Trick tribute. http://www.cheattrick.co.uk/ -
Dear God that has made matters worse! a) they've been doing this for years and I've never seen/heard of it. b) not only would it mess with your mind which tuner to reach for but... c) the B string tuner would work in reverse (or is it geared in reverse... please tell me it is). LOL

Every day is a school day. Today I learned that Fodera are capable of making something simple and straightforward more complicated than it needs to be! Other opinions are available.
-
So you're not questioning if it is a genuine Fodera? Is it really just me then?
-
Help me out here folks my head is done in! I can't believe you'd chop back/forwards with the tuners like that, yet some of you are telling me it is genuine?
-
Ahhh but... That image is from the site that the seller has linked to and it is NOT the Fodera site! Use a search engine and you'll be directed to the Fodera site that is not hosted by 'SmugMug'!
-
Seriously? Why would you extend the B string but then revert back to the E string being shorter? If the science says a longer string has a better fundamental, then surely that applies to the E string as well?
-
Indeed!

You literally can't understand how a faker could get something SOOOOOOO wrong but my head started to hurt and wonder whether this was a genuine clever idea... that my brain just couldn't register. For sale for a paltry sum of 7200 euro. https://www.facebook.com/commerce/listing/913145782937721?media_id=3&ref=share_attachment

I 'think' many of us read the OP comments and approached this from the stance of that he had overpaid and that he thought he had bought a genuine Ray. When in fact it is likely the OP bagged a £50 bargain and maybe secretly hoped it was genuine and he would get affirmation that its value was x20 more.

If you paid good money (market value) for a USA Musicman Stingray, you have been conned. If you bought at low cost, a bass that was meant to be 'like' a USA Musicman Stingray, then you have something that looks a bit like one. It's fake btw!

I had to put some of my parent's stuff through a local auction so I decided to watch what sort of prices stuff went for (most of these auctions can now be watched/bid online). I was frankly amazed to see 'tat'/junk going for daft prices. I realise that you could argue that there could well be hidden treasure among it... there wasn't, it was JUNK. To add to that I watched countless individual items go through which I was familiar with the prices (mountain bikes, hi-fi gear etc) and it was staggering! Rusted junk bikes (catalogue/Halfords cheapies) with missing parts were selling for way more than you could test ride and buy on the Marketplace and this wasn't during the height of Covid when you couldn't find a bike for sale anywhere. As has been said, bidding fever kicks in and some folk must just bid on stuff because it seems a bargain... it isn't when you add the buyers premium of approx 30% on top of the hammer price.

Will someone PLEASE let him know you can achieve all of that shyte he was playing on a regular guitar!

Before you open it up to check the valves, have you tried using the amp with 1 cab? It is possible to have your speaker cables wired out of phase with each other, so adding the 2nd cab can be detrimental to the sound. Do your cabs/leads work 100% with a different amp? Is it possible to try the amp with different cabs/leads? Is the cab new from a shop? If so take it back and ask to plug back into their cabs, that'll eliminate possible dodgy valves. I'm fairly confident about stuff under the bonnet so I'd be happy to take the top off and reseat the valves but appreciate that others might be happier leaving to others... it comes back to how easy it is to return it to the seller. <edit> Just reread your first post and I assume these are the cabs that you trialled it with initially! However... are they the cables you got with it? Might still be worth trying with other cabs/cables to be sure it is the amp at fault.
-
First thought is that it is your cabs and/or leads. I'm assuming the other connections on the back are effects in/out? I'd disconnect them so that you just have bass > amp > cab(s). That leads us to your speaker cables; they look home made/mismatched, are you sure they are both wired the same? I'd try the amp into 1 cab first. Next thought based on the fact I've had one of these amps, are the preamp valves seated correctly and one of them is not on it's last legs? It could be when being transported or stored in the cold that a valve is not 100% OK.

He probably got a load of messages and had a rethink that maybe it was too cheap. Oddly if he now gets no interest, the people who were interested at first will give him a swerve!

I bought an EastCoast Thinline Tele and I loaned it to our guitarist... he kind of liked it and did a video. -

Likewise I can swap from 30" / 32" / 34" / 35" scale and not miss a beat. The exception for me has been the acquisition of the shortie fretless... oooops I hadn't realised how much muscle memory I have for 34" scale and I really have to concentrate when playing 30" fretless. -
I have a TC Pethora which I've been tweaking to give me a passable emulation of a 12 string bass. In the process I created a couple of patches which I stored as they just sounded phat/saturated; in the end I've ended up running my 'normal' bass tone through the TC to give this slightly overdriven/compressed tone... and I like it!

It's actually a 'much' nicer colour in the flesh, a proper green around the edges Roquefort cheese colour. I don't think the seller pushed the weight thing as much as he could, it weighs less than 7lb and yes it is a solid wood body. I'm not sure how I'm going o get on with the pan / tone controls(ie no volume) but I rarely use volume in a live situation. The rear DiMarzio may end up getting an electrician's tape modification as the pole pieces are intrusive. -
