    I'm after a couple of sets of Sunbeams and went on Stringbuster's site but prices have gone up £6-£7 in the last 6 mths! The weakness of the £ v $ means that the import route via ebay seems pretty pricey to... where is the wise (tight ) shopper to go these days?

    You could ask if there are any BCers in/around Tamworth and then see if they'd mind you popping along and trying their amp out. I'm not saying anyone would be up for letting a complete stranger come along and borrow their amp but I'd not object to any local newbie having a try of mine (under supervision) and if I knew the person I might be prepared to pop along and let them trial it at a rehearsal (in fact 2 BCers local to me have done exactly that and one of them now owns the same amp!). If people are polite and sensible you tend to get a positive response... be nice, be happy!

As for PA, OK for coffee house gigs, but again grossly overpriced, and won't do large rooms.[/quote] I researched these a year or so ago and after talking to people who use them (guitarist/vocalist in coffee shop style bands) and people who sell them (you get honest opinions from people who you've dealt with for 20 years); it transpired that even with a 'pair' of their subs, you still wouldn't get the kind of punch you get from bog standard cab designs! I was told by the guy who retailed them to save my money and walk away... that was good enough for me! They are supposedly very good for duo's etc doing smaller buskers style gigs.

In the down position you have full humbucker in the up you get a Jazz pup. Quite versatile and not gimmicky at all, in fact MM started doing this with the pup they fitted in the Sterling.

    Is it any greater of a temptation @ £650 and that includes case, straplocks, a set of gold coloured knobs (quality ones not naff alloy) along with the standard ones AND delivery?

Not I...[/quote] That's the truth BUT we are talking 'comparison' i.e. how one sounds against the other. My comment about the usefulness of the comparison was aimed at the fact that if they didn't use identical strings and settings then you aren't getting anywhere near a useful comparison (though as you say it don't mean squat till you fire it up with other instruments). TBH if you've got the kind of money it takes to buy a CS Fender, no comparison on earth is going to convince you that a £250 bass is as good as a £2500 one.

Maybe it's just me but if that isn't the case then any comparison is pretty much a waste of time!

BO Wicks aren't my bag but I can't ever remember seeing a review of a BO maple necked Streamer! There are a few NT editions that have 3 laminate maple necks but I thought W preferred wenge and ovankol for their BO due to the strength.

If I didn't have a long term relationship with my SSI I think I'd have been over the moon with the Spector. That isn't to say that the Wick is better than the Spector, they are just different and I happen to prefer 'certain' aspects of the Wick. I'm sure if we got half a dozen bassists together who all had various Streamers or Spectors we'd all find one that we preferred above the others and that's how it is with this bass. Whoever buys it will be over the moon and may well not care for my SSI in the slightest, though they'd be more than welcome to come along and do an A/B before buying.

    Yep, listening to those recordings there's not a lot in it. I would add the caveat that it wasn't exactly a scientific approach as there was some discrepancy in the the output/recording levels of some of the samples (evident when they blended mid play), which 'might' skew how one or other of the basses came across. However overall I'd agree with marcus that in a live situation you'd be VERY hard pushed to tell the difference between most of those.
