forgot to say, watt for watt, tube/valve amps are considered louder than solid state if I recall correctly- anyone wanna back me up on that? Memory is getting hazy with my old age
A watt is a watt... a valve watt is NOT louder than a tranny watt. However due to the characteristics of the tone of valves (i.e. distortion) it can 'appear' louder/fuller, though it is not in fact any louder.
I don't mind it mate, aslong as the condition is very very good. That Hartke looks good but I'd need cabs to go with it right?
Ah! You said 'amp' not amp and cabs/combo. You will get something in combo form for your budget but it will need to be used to get anything near powerful enough for your money.
-
A no-brainer really; for £180 you can get a 500watt Hartke amp that'll cover most gigs you're likely to encounter regardless of size. Whether the tone floats your boat is another matter but '£ for watt' it is about the best you can expect! <edit> Look here... the £180 price I quoted was an on-line price I found at the time this thread was active.
OP's second post so pretty new to the place, even if the first was in November. I'm always amused by the sort of people who post with phrases such as 'no time wasters'. It's the same attitude that the guys working in the shops in Denmark Street have. Doesn't make me right or them wrong, but if he has the right to say it, I think we have the right to comment in our own way
November 2007! -
Looks interesting. I don't have a clule about Fenders but I'm keeping an eye on this thread cos it'll be interesting to find out what this is. What are the reasons that it could not be the JV00001?
If it is #1 of the whole JV series it would be a very collectable (expensive) instrument. However... If it's getting gigged in a PF trib band in old blighty I'd love to hear the story of how it got to where it is. FWIW I reckon it's a fake. It looks FAR too clean to be that instrument; the tuners look modern and shiny, the headstock just looks like it has a lack of the patina/colour that the genuine old JV's have (regardless of whether it has been in a sealed box under the bed) dare I say the headstock looks anemic, though I accept that lighting can play tricks. Lastly; I may be a Geordie but even I wouldn't clag a NUFC sticker on the headstock of the oldest/first JV instrument produced... FAKE!

Still For Sale. Fender Vintage 62 Reissue OPW (Price Droped)
warwickhunt replied to big cat's topic in Basses For Sale
No disrespect intended big cat but the price may not be the only reason that your bass isn't attracting buyers. There is 'probably' a small target audience of BCers who could collect your bass if they were interested. If I were in the market for a P bass and I didn't live in N Ireland, I'd have to think twice before parting with funds to a foreign student in Belfast who is strapped for cash! Harsh I'm afraid but true. As an alternative to advertising on here, there must be a local music scene/circuit where you can advertise the bass, or possibly at Uni? There'll also be local rehearsal spaces where you can put an ad up for the bass. Of course if the price for your bass was tempting enough there'd probably be a few folk on here who might be prepared to take a punt and pay via PayPal. Good luck selling the bass and with your studies. -
I found another (this time not American D'oh ) http://www.bassexchange.com/catalog/produc...roducts_id=1314 athough its been sold
Yep that one is just a 90's USA fender re-issue, nothing to do with Squier or JV; I had one not so long back (J Retro fitted).
Don't think there is owt wrong with the stack pots, just google it and there's quite a few including an oly white one for sale somewhere. The price is a bit on the steep side, even if it does come with a hard case. Here about 1/3 of the way down http://webcorral.com/store/index.html

The one on that page is a different thing altogether though - an american reissue. The JV's were the original Squier series and weren't reissues as such, even though they were pretty close. But I'm pretty certain they didn't ever come with stack pots.
Like Musky and I have said, there is no such thing as a stack-knob JV Squier bass as per the early 61 Jazz bass. All JV Jazz basses would have had the v/v/t set up, there was no range of options/reissues. Hence the bass this guy is selling isn't all original and as such the price is steep... wtf am I talking about! The price is steep FULL STOP. <edit> Just had a look at his other pics. So the bass is actually a Fender Japan non-export model. So when is a Squier not a Squier... when it's a Fender.

I do agree that he is having a laugh re. value, especially as I can't ever recall the JV basses having the 61/62 stack-kn*b control plate, so that bit ain't original!

Warwick Streamer... screw it its withdrawn
bump for the bass buying hordes on a Saturday.... Screw it, its not worth me selling it. My old one at £600 seems a we bit daft compared to a new one at £3k or whatever they list it at mow. I think i can afford not too sell. I sold my fender to afford the JV squier, it was a bit more but i think the bank manager wont be ringing me, just no big holiday. so there. Withdrawn.
Wise decision mate! How's the JV coming along? -
Is it possible in that case then that the truss rod cover is not original? I don't know enough about Warwicks to be sure enough about details like that... although my 92 Streamer is most definitely NOT a bolt-on.
TBH I thought the cover looked like the screws were misaligned a bit but that can happen regardless of whether the cover is original or a replacement. IIRC the original BO Streamers may well have had covers just saying 'Warwick Streamer Bass', the later models may well have gotten the full LX designation on them. I think that I have an old Bassist mag that reviewed the LX model that may show what the TR cover was. However, no matter what the badge (XR3i badge on the back of a 1.1 Escort does not make a XR3i ) it is a Streamer bass which the seller has (sadly) been misinformed about! -
Isn't there a Warwick employee on the Warwick forum? Maybe he should have gone there for advice. John, you are EXACTLY the sort of bloke Warwick SHOULD be employing! Peter
TBH Peter there are several knowledgeable guys high up on the 'W' forum whether they are on the pay-role or not I don't know. re. who Warwick should employ - There-in is the problem, when the man pays your wages you sing what the man wants to hear; I have a lot of experience with Warwicks and I know the pros and cons of their basses, I know the range reasonably well and I can tell a duffer at 20 paces (OK that's a bit poetic ) and with impunity I'll discuss my views re. Wick jack-sockets or the occasional foible with truss-rod direction etc. but I'm not sure it's what they'd want to hear what I had to say. I'll happily give advice about Warwicks (especially the earlier models, I'll be the first to admit I have little interest in 'some' of the stuff Warwick ave produced over the years) on any forum... whether people want to hear what someone like me has to say is another matter. I gave that eBay guy advice re. what his bass is and it's value (bearing in mind the damage) but sometimes the truth hurts. At the end of the day a bass is worth what someone will pay, I have a couple of basses up for sale and I know what they are; to some people the relative values may be high but I know when something is worth £600 or £1600 regardless of whether it is my bass or not. -
Fair does! The guy has pulled the listing until he can look into the spec of the bass. A good sign that he may well be a genuine seller with no knowledge of a bass that he has owned for 7 years. However, he has one flaw in his plan... he has said he'll get the info direct from Warwick! From past experiences (and I'll give them the opportunity to get it right this time) the helpful people at 'W' HQ appear to be a bunch of accountants and/or Office Monkeys who at times don't know a great deal about their own 'vintage' or older instruments. They can (and often will) quote you the spec straight off their website but the number of times people have been convinced that their 88 SSI has an Ovankol neck because that's what the folks at 'W' HQ state a SSI neck wood is! Ah! Comments like that may explain why I never get invited by HP Wilfer to the Office parties and why I can't access the Warwick forum at the minute... the barstewards have locked me out!
Oops Warwick. I've just reread Warwick's response to the seller's query and yet again a classic from Warwick HQ! Warwick tell the guy his bass has a Wenge neck and fingerboard... fair does they may not be in full receipt of the facts from the seller but to claim it has to be Wenge when it is 'patently' maple is just another example of why it isn't always a good thing to believe the horse's mouth. Sigh! I just can't see them giving me that job any time soon if I continue to pick holes in my favourite manufacturers practices.
