It's the way I bid on eBay.. I leave it until 5 seconds or less to push the confirm button and always have the best amount I'm prepared to pay... Then I either get it at, or below the maximum price I was happy to pay, ....or someone else was prepared to pay more. Then I have no regrets, win or loose. The difficult part is being honest with yourself about the amount you want to pay... If you think you would have gone higher after you see the final bid, it means you weren't honest with yourself...
Edit: Don't be tempted to be all noble and put in your honest highest price earlier than the last few seconds. If you do you'll just drive the price up earlier and probably not win. eBay is only worth using when there's a bargain to be had IMHO, so for me it's the only way to buy at a bargain price. Most things will appear again, or if it's something quite rare, which you *really* want, then your max price has to reflect how much you want it.
