1.
It seems like Jeff's thing is now recording at home and pretty much doing all the instruments himself. That was how he did the completely unnecessary rerecorded Greatest Hits set a few years ago. The Mr Blue Sky doc gives a good account of it (available as a bonus feature of the Hyde Park DVD). Of course I bought that collection (because...) but thought that it was pretty sterile - too much tidied up and Jeff is also no Bev Bevan. As to Richard Tandy being in the band. He's worked and off with Jeff for ages. There were some duo gigs for US TV/radio - Richard and Jeff - to promote the Greatest Hits (and some of those tracks ended up as bonus tracks on that). Whilst we would all love to see Jeff, Bev, Mik, Richard, Hugh and Melvyn on stage together again unless someone can borrow a Tardis that looks very unlikely :-( As it was I saw ELO Pt 2 some years ago with Bev, Hugh, Melvyn and the sadly missed Kelly Groucutt handling bass and lead vocals at Guildford Civic Hall. That was one cracking gig!
I believe the re recording of the greatest hits was significantly influenced by the financials. JL received writers royalties on the originals, but I believe the performance royalties were poor, and he also had no control over the tracks. By re recording, he owns all the royalties and the actual ownership of the masters. It also cuts out all the ex band members I would imagine.
 2.
Richard Tandy, goes back to the early days of ELO and the only one Jeff has kept any relationship with (though he doesn't seem to be on the new studio album at all!). Don't think he's even spoken to Bev Bevan for the best part of 30 years. I think it all got a bit touchy over the whole 'ELOII' thing.
Regarding him not being on the new album : its not just him - Jeff Lynne has produced the new Bryan Adams album, and he's also played pretty much everything on it too : guitar, bass, keys and drums. BA has done a lot of the guitars and vocals, and his regular lead player, Keith Scott, has done a good number of the solos, but other than that, it was all done in Jeff's house in the California hills, with just BA and Jeff. It's a poor album too IMHO, with some weak material, and only a couple of the tracks would have made it to an album in his heyday. It's also been bulked out with acoustic versions of the tracks - almost in demo format. Fair enough as added extras, but they make up a good part of the actual album.
 3. Mike Stevens is the MD, and it's the same band that played the Queens Jubilee, and backs Gary Barlow solo, and Take That on tour. He plays guitar, keys and sax, as well as the BVs : talented bugger. First call band for these high profile gigs. The keys player was an original ELO Band member - the only one I think. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec12/articles/mike-stevens.htm
 4.
Weighs in at a lovely 7.44 lbs
Is that the guitar or the rabbit? As you are chilli wailer, does that make her Bunny Wailer? Anyway, crap jokes aside, that is an outstanding guitar, and I would think it will only increase in value, so, whether gigged or kept for studio work, it's a great buy. If only I had £1,600! GLWTS.
 5. Probably been said already but check out your local Crack Converters and car boots. You can email pics to the crackies, but just as well to drop in and see if they've got it up for sale. A 5 is more niche than a 4, and the brand is less mainstream than your usual fenders and squiers. Also worth mailing all the local guitar shops, as they may try and well it in one of them. Also, is there a local muso FB page in your area? That gets the message about - and the more publicity, the better. Good luck - I hope it finds its way home.
 6. I've been using the Ernie Ball 'Skinny top, heavy bottom' strings on my strat for years, and I like them. That's got a trem, and I don't find it suffers tuning issues, but a Bigsby may be very different. If you want to go all Stevie Ray Vaughan, you can go up to a 56 on the bottom E : which may explain the fantastic tone on stuff like Pride & Joy! 56 to 13!!!! https://www.stringjoy.com/stevie-ray-vaughans-guitar-string-gauges/
 7. I've got a a multi tilt stand that I use for a Marshall combo, and I have to,say, I find it great, as it means you can aim the speaker at your ears, rather than your trousers. Consequently, from a monitoring point of view, you can turn down and still hear yourself, but, it still projects well into an audience. Good for old backs too - not so far to bend down to change settings! I also think it isolates the speaker better from the stage, which if you are playing on an old hollow village hall or social, club wooden stage, definitely is better for tone, and takes away a lot of the boomy bottom end. Mine is a Quicklok - about £60 : http://www.gak.co.uk/en/quik-lok-ql-640-amp-stand/33047?gclid=CMus2sj9lckCFScTwwodrLoH4w
 8.
Thanks all, location is Basingstoke Hampshire. RAY35 is pale blonde, VVGC but the thumb rest is a giveaway, being non-standard. The Ashdown speakers are in pretty good nick, the grilles are a little dented but no significant marks, because they had covers from new. The amp (might be Mag 350 - quite old) has some Tipex marks for EQ. What else might help? Mike
Where, when, circumstances, any pictures of the gear.
 9.
The Paris attacks notwithstanding, the yanks seem to think it's OK to glorify guns, quoting the US Constitution. That was written back in time when you needed a musket to protect yourself from Grizzly Bears or poachers on your homestead.... Is Commerford with the Band 'Tool'...?
Donald Trump managed to weigh in too......... http://variety.com/2015/biz/news/donald-trump-paris-terror-attacks-guns-1201640791/
 10. I've been looking for some replacement pick ups for a cheap Chinese Tele I bought on here, and there are a lot of options - no surprise. I don't want to shell out for dimarzios etc. so I've been looking at some of the after market companies like Iron Stone. Anyone have any suggestions for some good replacements which won't break the bank? It's for playing rhythm guitar in a classic rock band, so boutique custom winds not necessary! Thanks.
 11.
Didn't there drummer have a long problem with heroin? An overdose or two I think I do think the first album is really good, and not particularly "formulaic"
Certainly did. Taylor Hawkins - overdosed in London and spent about a month in a private hospital. I believe it took him about 2 weeks to come around, and Grohl talks about sitting by the bed throughout that time, scared he was going to die. They seem the closest out of all the band members (drummers club), and thankfully he's grown out of all the Rock and Roll excess bullshit now. Great drummer too.
 12. The Smiths for me. Marr is a great songwriter and guitarist, but Morrissey? Can't stand the guy, and it's completely irrational, but just seeing him pisses me off. Very bizarre!
 13.
This is 90% of the London music scene at the moment... for every proper music venue that closes down, three vegan ethnic peace cafes open up with a tiny stage in the corner, from which a bearded man softly whinges about something or other over a few chords...
The 'Sheeran Ripple Effect' I believe it's known as. Has its place, but not 90% of venues. Cheaper and less hassle of course than bands - mic and a DI, job done. Plus if course, if you run a multi artist night, each performer's friends and family turn up, so it's good for getting a reasonable turn out too.
 14.
Income.
Change a word, claim a third.
 15. I've only really got into them lately, after watching the Sonic Highways docs on TV. I was never much of a Nirvana fan - I found all of the Cobain angst a bit of a turn off, but they were a cracking band live from what I've seen on video, due in no small part to Grohl's drumming. He's clearly a big part of the equation when it comes to the Foo Fighters popularity : the first album was effectively him solo, and he only put the band together after he'd recorded everything himself, so he could tour. It's easy to forget that he had the option to disappear into his own world after the death of his friend, and could have been one of those guys who ends up in bar bands, his period of fame having past, but he worked his nuts of with the Foo's, frequently against some fairly hostile Kurt fans, who wanted him to spend his life pining for their hero, as they do. I can't remember exactly how many, but they toured that first album for something like 250 gigs in just over a year, and he has an insatiable drive - underlined I think by a genuine love of music, and a need to express himself through it. He's famously a nice guy, but not a soft touch, and whilst he openly accepts he's made some hard and unpleasant decisions around band members, he's not been afraid to make them - sometimes sacking his old friends (and heroes). As the line from Jerry Macguire runs - "It's not show friends, it's show business", but it's still a hard thing to do, particularly when it means taking the dream (and the cheques) away from a friend. With regard to the material, I'd agree some of it is a bit shouty, but, his background is in hardcore and punk bands, and I'd be delighted to write something a quarter as good as 'These days'. He's an excellent writer of what he's chosen to do, big arsed stadium rock, and the live shows are generally fantastic. He's not the best guitar player and openly admits the songs are 'really easy', although I think they are trickier than most imagine, but if you've seen him playing the Rush tribute, where he covers Lifesons's lead parts, he's no slouch. Whether you like a band or otherwise is very personal, and there is a whiff of snobbery about the Foo's I think from some, in the sense that they are a bit populist, and people that don't know much about music like them, so they must be crap. I'd venture the same is true of the Beatles - plenty of people who don't consder themselves music buffs, love The Beatles, which is down to the great tunes - and writing a catchy pop song isn't as easy as it seems. For myself, I can't see what anyone sees in U2 : massively overhyped, and the whole Saint Bono thing I find ludicrous, but - they've got some good tunes - Vertigo is a cracker, and whilst The Edge isn't Pat Metheny, he's the best guitarist for U2. Finally, nothing wrong (IMHO) with 4 Foo's tunes in a set if the intention is to please a crowd, and surely that's what being in a pub band is all about, getting people dancing, drinking and having a laugh. The band might prefer to play obscure Jethro Tull B sides, but that's not the brief - it's show business.
 16. I've had a look through the posts but couldn't find anything on this, so any insights gratefully received. I want to remove the high gloss finish on a 'natural' guitar body, and oil or wax it as an alternative. I'm comfortable with the stripping part, but don't have a clue on the refinishing. What would you go for? Wax? Oil? And most importantly what products would you suggest? Cheers A
 17. Interesting comments, as ever on BC. I think I'm just frustrated that they are a great band and they just seem to be selling themselves short. The 'Metallica machine' is, and always has been, a well oiled and planned marketing strategy, but for me they risk becoming a parody of themselves, and that's a great shame, as I still think they have something great to contribute. But, whilst they are wrapped up in their own little bubble, that's not going to happen, and hence my comments about getting in a room, jamming some stuff out and working to a deadline. Easy to forget Rob's been in the band nearly 12 years now, and in that time they've put out 1 album which he's played on (Death Magnetic), 2 if you count the Lou Reed collaboration 'Lulu', or 3 if you include the soundtrack of old material for 'Through the never'. As an example of my 'same old set list' comment : here is a link to their Rock in Rio set from September this year : http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/metallica/2015/cidade-do-rock-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-6bf49e56.html 1 track from Death Magnetic Nothing from St Anger 5 from the Black album, 2 from Load/Reload and 2 covers, with the balance from albums prior to 1992, (14 of the 17 track set list). I fully accept that punters want the hits, but - they haven't reached the Stones' heritage act' status yet, where they've almost become their own tribute act, and I think its a sad reflection of their catalogue if they don't want to dip into anything that less than nearly 20 years old. I'll buy the new album, but I probably wont bother with a concert, as I've seen them doing all the old stuff before, and its got to the stage now where the 'ad libs' are carefully scripted, and for me that takes the immediacy and the true audience/artist connection out of it, and turns it into cabaret.
 18. You may find this article from Sound on Sound interesting. Talks about the recording of Le Freak, but Nile Rodgers talks about recording the Sister Sledge album concurrently, and Bernard favoured the Ray in the studio from all that I've read. Interesting that 'He's the greatest dancer' was recorded originally as a Chic basic track, and they gave it away after Le Freak was a hit. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr05/articles/classictracks.htm
 19. http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-10-30/metallica-new-album-sounds-like-death-magnetic-kirk-hammett Apparently it sounds a lot like Death Magnetic according to Kirk. Oh well - 7 years in the making (so far) and they are still in that territory. Also interesting to note that they are recording it piecemeal - Hetfield and Ulrich doing the drums and guitars in full, and then Kirk goes in to do his stuff. That sounds like a joyful experience, and will be a great reminder of why they wanted to be in band. I'll repeat myself, but somebody needs to tell them the King has no clothes on, and they need to stop doing gimmicky festival shows, with fans on stage, crapping on about 'the Metallica family' all the time, - rehashing the same set list they've done for 20 years, and give up the now almost complete descent into the Spinal Tap parody, 'chicken in the basket' casino circuit act. Get away from your families, your millionaire toys, your ass kissing personal assistants : get into a room, jam as a band, and give yourself a deadline by which you have to have it finished - and record it as a band - live, on analogue. I'd even suggest another Garage inc. would be a good starting point - get back to playing what you loved as a kid, and for the joy of doing it. Give the inevitable money to a charity. I feel like I'm watching an old friend kill himself through an addiction (in this case to bullshit and ego), and can do nothing to help. Intervention required. Very sad.
 20.
There does seem to be a gulf between contributing members and selling members now, which I think is a bit of a negative for the site. It used to be that we had contributing members who sold and bought so much they'd get their leg pulled continually for it. I feel an influx of £150 cheapos is exactly what the marketplace needs
Quite agree, and I refer the honorouable gentleman, and other members, to my comments some posts ago : price banded for sale section is an answer, with perhaps a sub £250, £250 to £1000, and over £1000 delineation. If that's a hassle from an IT perspective, why not just a 'cheap and cheerful' section, for sub £250.
 21.
Blackberry Smoke - Holding all the roses. Awesome band and great tunes The recording is on CD stunning but would love to own it on vinyl as my hifi system would pull out so much more detail and open it right up. https://www.youtube....h?v=-HGNofJc7zI My baby made me rock n roll again ... worth a watch on the tube
That's a great album!
 22.
I had Harder, Faster. I bought it after seeing them on The Old Grey Whistle Test (video from Le Studio). Before the Dawn was a great track. IIRC there's a King Crimson track on that album; 21st Century Schizoid Man?
There is!
 23.
Absolutely right. I have still got an Eros Jazz that I bought new in 73, Plays better than most 70s Fenders, sounds good, was £100 cheaper than the white Precision I wanted at the time. Not many, if any Squiers around then. Antoria were usually considered the 'good' copies. Cant remember the last time I saw a nice Antoria up for sale.
There was a nice sunburst Jazz on gumtree last week, just down the road from me, up at £150. I was quite tempted actually, as it had a case and was part of bereavement clearance by the owners kids. Looked as if it was gigged, but by a careful owner.
 24.
I think the BassChat market place has changed quite a bit since I've been here. The amp section maybe not so much but the bass section is dominated by high end gear it seems. There's very little in the £200-£500 bracket and less still in the under £100. There's also a considerable number of mainland European sellers, not a bad thing, but the reach of the site has definitely broadened. There seemed to be considerably more trading and dealing in lower value basses a few years ago. You don't see many Squiers etc.
Slight tangent to the discussion, but I'd actually like to see a price based part of the For Sale section : Perhaps sub £500, as I find myself trawling through a lot of ads for stuff in which I either have no interest (6 string boutique 'coffee table' basses), or would like but can't justify the outlay ( a 1964 'YOB' precision). If I could go in and know that everyrthing in there would fit within what I would be prepared to spend, I'm immediately more engaged and more likely to take a regular look. It's nice to look around Harrods, but it's not something I'd do every day - whereas M&S, I might go into much more frequently - if the analogy makes sense?
 25.
ah yeah...You Outta Know...Flea on bass...good call
And if you are in the West Country how about Dreckly 90s, or perhaps Maid in the 90s as a band name?
