1.
The importers are in Poole: http://www.intermusic.com/products/guitars
Thanks. Just taken a look at the website, and they do a version influenced by the appearance of 'a well known bass guitar', which we won't mention by name. No Violin bass in their current range though. As has been said, the likelihood of them all coming out of the same factory is quite high, so the HB version looks like a good option for that money.
 2.
Ha ha, brilliant. As you suggest, he would have paid his dues after having played there. Wish him luck from me.
I think they'll need it. I was in town a few weeks ago, walking back to the car after a night out with Mrs A, and a couple were having a real humdinger of a shouting match outside, at about 120db, with plenty of salty language, of the kind that would make a sailor blush : and that was just from the woman. She was about 50, what one might call 'battle scarred', with plenty of miles on the clock, and a nice taste in mini skirts . The bloke was the classic beer bellied, 50 plus skinhead in a polo shirt, with a 'triple ripple' of fat at the back of his neck and Union Jack tats - and holding a pint in one hand and a fag in the other, throughout the 'discussion'. That said, they'll probably defy the prejudices and be up dancing from the start, good as gold!
 3. Anyone got one? Thoughts on the value for money, (based on the reasonable quality/cost correlation)? At £105 I'm not sure what to expect (!), but the reviews are pretty good, and it seems to be a playable instrument. Thanks
 4. I put up a thread about 'top tips' for first time recording sessions a while ago, as a guy I know in the village has a son who plays in an originals band, and they were spending a weekend in a studio doing an EP CD. The band in question - all aged just about 18, have got a gig in town on Friday night. This is the Tripadvisor page for the venue : http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186377-d6403991-Reviews-Theatre_Bar-Stafford_Staffordshire_England.html I'm thinking this might turn out to be what we may call 'a learning experience'! Let's hope they know a few covers too.
 5. Hmmm..... Just wondering if 'Any good for metal' would work? Genius idea.
 6.
My wife has terrible music taste but amazing jubblies and her dad owns a brewery.
I used to like the big orange ones. You could suck on those for hours if you were feeling a bit hot.
 7. Mrs A has what I like to call 'Chad Valley ears' - insofar as she generally only likes really poppy stuff, although I have managed to get her to listen to some Neil Young and some folky Americana. Nothing heavy though, or bluesy. She's a dab hand at the 70s and 80s sound stuff when it comes to singing around the house, as she had much older siblings, and was listening to their music as a pre teen.
 8.
Load in and load outs tend to be a pain in the arse in some of these places. One in particular is a real pain, however the owner is really cool, pays in advance and books us for 3 dates at a time. Hey, I'm no rich guy. If I play 2-3 dives in a weekend I could have anywhere from $350.00 to $450.00 in my wallet if tips and merch goes well. It's a hustle and I love it. For you guys that don't, I say, "why bother at all" Blue
You've been on here too long Blue, you are starting to spell correctly! Arse, not ass. That and the Union Jack t shirt, you'll be drinking tea and moaning about the weather in no time.
 9.
God this is tempting, the first gig is tonight!!!!
In fairness, most of the tour is in September and later, and I suspect they've got the current gigs covered. They then have a break of a few weeks before the bulk of the dates, but I suspect the money might be less than imagined. Great experience though, and for a sh*t hot young metal bassist, it would be a great learning experience, and look good on the CV.
 10. Auditions via video apparently - pick players only it seems. And only needs to be " a relatively good person "! First gig is tomorrow though, so get in quick. http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-07-23/annihilator-in-last-minute-sos-for-tour-bassist
 11.
Sounds like a damn good set list.
Conferred with my drinking partner, and we have (mostly) agreed on the following. I was jet lagged, and we had a few more beers than is my usual, so the end of the evening is a bit more hazy than normal. It helped enormously that they had a keys player, as a lot of this would be hard with just 2 guitars I think. I've certainly never heard Alanis Morissette's 'You oughta know' sung by a bloke before, and with no change to the lyric! That said, and as has been discussed on here many times, how many people actually listen to the words? Not in set list order................... Run with the pack - Bad Company Don't do it - The Band New sensation - Inxs Fortunate Son - Creedance Sting me - Black Crowes Cocaine - Eric Clapton version Cuts like a knife - Bryan Adams Purple Ran - Prince Rocks off - Primal Scream? Vertigo - U2 Cinnamon Girl - Neil Young Changing man - Paul Weller (although I'm told it wasn't, but was 'something else from that album' - Stanley Road) Waiting for the bus - ZZ Top (but it may have been something else from the pre MTV days - La Grange maybe?) Back in the USSR/Live and Let die - Beatles/McCartney
 12. On a boring practical note, can I point out that it's really important that when you pay the guy for the logo, it's for ownership of the rights as well as the artistic work. If you don't square that off, he can wait until it's a really important part of your brand and then push to be paid for every time you use it. Get it in writing as part of the deal would be my recommendation.
 13. I saw a great band last week - first two numbers : Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young and Vertigo by U2. The place was hopping from the start. They also did Purple rain by Prince as a slow blues, which gave the guitarist a great opportunity to wig out - and he was very, very good. I'm trying to remember the balance of the set list - it definitely had some INXS and Alanis Morrisette. They definitely did Fortunate Son, and Back in the USSR, going into a great version of Live and let die. Really nice to hear something different
 14. Crowded House. Great lines, sublime songs and a mature bunch of good musicians.
 15.
I'm ageing myself. Spending a couple of hours at a time behind Susannah Hoffs could make an old man very happy.
And a happy man very old.
 16.
Probably - he's the guitarist named on Wikipedia for what it's worth. Whoever it was image-wise they were totally inappropriate for the band. Strangely enough I caught Furniture at the end of the 80s when they were promoting their second album "Food Sex & Paranoia". They were on in the SU bar at Trent Poly and were totally fantastic. The Wrong People is still one of my favourite albums. For a terrible live band from the 80s. IMO you would have to try very hard beat the awfulness of A Flock Of Seagulls. Lumpen, pedestrian, turgid synth pop churned out by people who didn't really understand musically, or image-wise, what it was all about; but were transparently desperate to be successful. Someone at their record company must have had a lot of faith in them (and a massive promotional budget), because it seemed that they would turn up as second support for every other really good band that I went see. I must have had the misfortune to catch their live act on at least 6 separate occasions, most of the time without realising that they were on the bill until I turned up at the gig.
The worst band I've ever seen live was Bad Manners- drunk, tuneless and shambolic, but my favourite ever band name was one I saw in the US, for an 80s tribute act - " A flock of assholes".
 17.
Having said that, I do know a solo act who is very very busy and works manically and he has bought and paid for his house in a matter of a few years but that is a very rare story, IMV.
I know a bloke who is phenomenally busy and charges top dollar - but he only does weddings and has a very specific act. Typically he's out twice a week, and whilst I'm not sure, my best guess would be that he's looking at £800 to £1,000 a gig if not much more TBH. For that, his clients get a very good singer, who also MC's the whole event and DJs the portions of the night where he's not performing, so it's a full on gig, and the event can stand or fall on his performance. He's excellent at working a crowd, and has the whole place up dancing very quickly. He's a very good networker and also has a paid engineer/roadie, as well as investing in top line gear : he's the first person I saw using one of those Bose column systems for example. Sadly, he works to high quality backing tracks for his live act, but, having spoken to him, I know he has worked with and learned his chops from a number of bands, since he was just a teenager. Whether he is fulfilled musically by the Michael Buble and Take That covers I don't know, but he's certainly making a bloody good living from it and he's a very sharp lad. His clients love him too, and he's booked almost completely through 2016 already. Not the way everyone wants to work, but he's found a way of being a full time entertainer, that also gives him a great lifestyle.
 18.
In my opinion, one of the most overrated and tuneless singers. I compare her to a pissed seagull.
I went for 'The Poundland Kate Bush', but I like your avian comparison. In fairness to her, she's clearly a commited artist, but whomever made the decision to move her up to headliner got it seriously wrong, as she was just way out of her league, and no amount of twirling in the glittery high waisters was going to make up for the fact that her act just isn't big enough for that stage and time. Also, I think she was on a loser by comparison with the prospect of Mr Grohl's band banging out the big stadium rock, who would have had the place bouncing.
 19.
Take it you'll be moaning about people having fun this weekend then?
Not sure if this is addressed to me, but I'll assume so! If not, ignore the following......... I certainly won't be 'moaning about people' having fun, and I hope everyone going to Glastonbury has a great time, and the weather treats them kindly, although the forecast looks a bit dodgy currently. It's not my 'poster' by the way, just something someone shared with me on FB, and I posted it here as I thought that it was quite amusing : I believe its called satire, and is designed to be entertaining. Given the replies, it appears to have been taken in that spirit by pretty much everyone so far, but I accept that we all have our own view of what is amusing. If anyone is offended by the poking of fun at thier favourite festival, I'm happy to apologise unreservedly. Have a great time if you are going, and don't forget to not eat the bad red rope liquorice I f it's doing the rounds......
 20.
Guinness / lager/ cider. Normally drink sensibly .at home now . Green And blacks before sleep. Day off tomorrow to dry out. What a strange night
Any night would look strange to me on a mix of Guiness, Lager and Cider. I suspect your typing may have suffered slightly from the influence of the refreshments (!), but I hope you feel ok when you are up and about. I prescribe 2 paracetamol, a large Lucozade Orange and a bacon sandwich - repeat the first two as required.
 21. I've not read it, but it comes highly recommended by an American friend of mine. Well written, candid, and with some excellent interviews with top players. Forward by Sting : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-semioli/bassist-michael-visceglia-reveals-a-view-from-the-side_b_7633230.html
 22. Nicely said. I moved away last year, but I've had a few pints in the OMT in Alty over the last 17 years, and as you say, always a busy live music pub with really good beer. The world could do with a few more landlords who believe in the value of both!
 23.
So, with no monitors how would you suggest they should have setup the PA so as to hear themselves & not get feedback? Just curious as to me it sounds like they were making the most of a bad situation. I'm by no means a sound engineer so would actually be curious to know. Thanks.
Good article from SOS which covers this. As the article suggests, with no vocals, speakers behind the performers can be a good call, as, without vocal mics, the chances of feedback are hugely reduced. What they could have done with, and, given the money they had spent on their gear (all very good quality, and clearly well looked after) I was surprised they didn't have, was any form of monitoring, and for a duo pub gig, a powered monitor on the floor (and the Mackies will 'kickback' to facilitate this), or, a small powered monitor on the mic stand works well, and doesn't cost a fortune but certainly pays its way in terms of the improvement of the performers experience. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct03/articles/goinglive.htm
 24.
To be honest, I get cheesed off with so called experts coming up and telling us how to do it. I would never dream of going up to a band and telling them to change settings unless I knew them or they asked me. I remember hearing a local band sound checking and giving them the thumbs up and saying sounds perfect guys The guitarist says oh, I can't hear the keys. So they turned up the keyboard and after that all we could hear was keyboard drowning out everything else I just thought, right, I'm not helping anymore. I thought an opinion from a known musician sitting in the audience would have counted for something
Exactly why I didn't say anything. They have no idea if you know what you are talking about, or are just some 'pub expert' who thinks its a case of turning up the treble knob, so I statyed well clear. 9 times out of 10 you are going to get the 'thanks mate, but we are alright' brush off, and that's if they are being polite.
