I would throw a Westone Thunder 1A into the ring. If my back weren't so fragile, anyway Great value, if rather heavy, instruments that sound immense. £200 would get you one in good nick and some change, too. If you had just £50 more there is a bitsa Fender Hot Rod for sale in the classifieds here that is exceptionally nice. Then again, for £220 there is a Yamaha 214.

Nearest I got so far with the ABM was with the shape button engaged then cut the bass and upper mids but it was still wrong somehow.

How do you eq your Ashdown? I bought one here recently but am struggling to set it up to how I like.

Caro Emerald at the Cliff's Pavilion last Thursday, great show. Then Friday saw the exact same show for Go West/Nick Kershaw/Carol Decker as I had seen the week before but at IndigO2. Very loud, perfect seat, crystal clear sound. Last show of the tour and a little bit of magic that night. Once again huge respect for Nick Kershaw - what a talent.

I have just gone full circle back to Trace amps (I actually like the scooped pre-shape 1 ) after a few years flirting with class Ds immediately post back hurting. A few months back I bought an AH300-12 SMX on here that had been rack mounted into an 2U ABS case and weighs around 12kgs. Not a lot, and not being bulky I find it an easy lift and balances with a lightweight cab on the other hand.

My new band 'The Wayward Sons' are doing a support slot of around 1hr to an established soul band Soulsation at Rayleigh Mill in Rayleigh, Essex. Our music is probably best described as 'Classic Rock Anthems' and the band is a kind of side project for some well known local musos - Noel Ashton on vocals, Ben Selleck on vocal and keys, Alan Gooden on drums and the incredible Steve Hoggart on guitar. What the heck they are doing with me on bass I'm not sure... Should be a good night's entertainment. £10 on the door, which opens at 8pm. Waywards kick off around 8:45pm.

Building your own is a good way forward. I had a 90s MIJ Fender Precision body fitted with a Mighty Mite Jazz neck and, eventually, a Fender original pickup. That was delicious and I regret not keeping it as it did all the things my subsequent basses have done. Fender Jazz Bass Special models have Jazz shaped necks but Precision bodies. P/J pups. Usually sell for around £400. Precision Lyte has an uber slim neck, very shallow. Sold mine now but there are a couple for sale within your budget. Squier Silver Series precision basses were the last of the MIJ Squiers from the early 90s, generally exceptionally good, and had a 40mm wide neck.

I have a Longhorn bass and it is very quirky, very light and very eye catching. Sounds huge, too.

Another one whose current rig is the best so far. Trace Elliot AH300-12 SMX into either a single or a pair of Barefaced Supercompacts. Sounds better than when I had the old Trace Elliot cabs. And around 80kg lighter
