Matt Schofield at Brooklyn Bowl O2 as part of the Bluesfest weekend. Second time I have seen him, he was better this time and it was a cracking gig. Bass player was superb - the keyboardists left hand!

Joe Satriani at the Cliff's Pavilion last night. I was expecting to be bored but felt obliged to see such a huge name at a small local venue. In fact I was totally blown away. Quite astonishing. I only knew a handful of his tunes before, seemed he decided to play all the ones I know at the end. Satch Boogie ended the set, Big Bad Moon and Surfing The Alien for encores! I probably enjoyed those as much as I have anything I have ever seen anyone perform but the rest of the show was pretty fantastic, too. The guy is a complete master of the instrument. I even enjoyed the support, Dan Patlanski - very Hendrix-esque.

Matt sold me a Fender original pickup for a keen price in a quick and painless deal. Cheers Matt!

Thanks for the link - that video is nicely done and very interesting. Decent vintage tone from the P bass pup, never heard an Aguilar before.

After much discussion and trialing I have come to the conclusion that the P bass pickup I like the most is the Fender Original, sometimes called the '62 Re-issue. I have just bought an '85 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special - 32" scale and uber-light body. This fella here, in fact: [attachment=204481:DSC06896.JPG] Very nice but the tone is possibly a little weak. If I decide to change the pups, what Jazz pickup would make a suitable 'old school' partner for a Fender Original P? I have no idea about Jazz bass pickups. Or are there any already matched pairs that give a similar old school sound? Ta much. Paul

I use a Mightysound PT-06 on my board, doubles as a mute switch and, with no battery space on board, takes up no room at all. Flagged up on here by Mr Discreet as I recall, and a jolly good bit of kit it is too. I use a multi-efffect Zoom MS-60B but find this tuner much better than that in the zoom. For 2 bands I don't use any effects, so use the Korg Pitchblack PB-01 that the Mightysound replaced. I also carry a small Korg plug-in one and have various Planetwave and Snark clip-ons around where I practice at home.

U2? Me too. Also Elvis Costello cropped up in the household as he is touring soon - I like a good few of his tunes but find him such an arrogant little gobsh*te I can't bear to watch him.

I have just returned to Trace Elliot from class D amps, having bought on here an AH300-12 SMX that had been rack mounted in an ABS 2U case. Weighs in at around 12kg, which isn't a deal breaker as far as my back is concerned and much the same as the cabs (Barefaced Supercompact). No, I can't fit it in my gig bag but it is a compromise I am prepared to make for the contentment I get every time I switch it on. I think this must be the way forward - rack mounting in ABS - as that wooden box must be heavy.

I bought new the first time I bought a 'gig-able' amp and then the first class D I bought. All the rest - and there have been a lot - have been second hand. On the theory that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince, my 'journey' through class D land would have been an expensive one had I bought new each time. Just at the moment I have fallen back in love with my recently acquired old Trace Elliot AH-300 12 SMX so, were I looking for twin back-up, second hand is the only way.

Mrs S and I go to gigs quite a lot. Last band I saw was kind of spoof Tex-Mex band 'Los Pacaminos' at a small local venue. 3rd or 4th time I've seen them - very entertaining. Paul Young is the draw, but he is way past his sell by these days - the main front man, Jamie Moses, is a star imo. Before that was Snarky Puppy at Hammersmith who I am sorry to say I didn't enjoy. Before that Zac Brown Band at the O2 who turned in a perfect rendition of some of their more bland material, sadly. Before that Level 42 at IndigO2, which kind of set the bar for the year. I've been watching Level 42 for 30 years and this was as good as I have seen them. Coming up this month Joe Satriani at the Cliff's Pavilion, Matt Schofield at Brooklyn Bowl, Average White Band at Royal Festival Hall, Simple Minds at the O2, Go West at the Cliff's Pavilion, Caro Emerald also at the Cliff's Pavilion. And I'm away on holiday - busy month!
