For me - and I am sure an awful lot of us on this forum - the words 'need' and 'want' are very different things. The way I look at it - if I want something nice, have the money to spend on it and the space to keep it, then I will get it. The fact that I might not actually need it is largely irrelevant.

3" is ideal for me but it can vary according to the material it is made from. Wider is nice of if is well cushioned and soft.

Same meat, different gravy - the Hohner B2 variants. B2, B2A, B2B, B2AD etc.

I saw him a couple of years back at Leicester Square and was left with the same opinion. Beautifully played, creatively brilliant solos around a selection of dull tunes.

Edge of Heaven is a sublime song in all respects, imo.

Songs From The Big Chair must be one of my top 10 albums of all time. I saw them live when that had just come out and was expecting a boy band. Amazing!

My little band did Pleasant Valley Sunday for a couple of years - not sure why we dropped it, tbh ... but what a fun bassline to play! Really drives it along. Love groove when you drop to E. And we tagged Last Train to Clarksville onto the end.

Great to read the whole story, thanks for the link. I bought a Compact in 2011, added a Midget in 2012, changed to a Supercompact 3 years ago and as soon as I tried it bought a second. Now added a One10 to the family. I like everything about the brand.

I have fewer basses at the moment than I have had for years. 2 x JV Squier Precison 4 stringers. One of those is for sale so doesn't count Jake 5 Heavily modded MM Sterling 5 Yamaha BX-5 Fender MB-5 Bolin NS5 de-fretted Stagg EUB, modded Dean Pace 5 EUB - probably on its way soon as I prefer the Stagg, so I guess that doesn't count either. A nice Kanile'a Islander Pako ukulele bass - but I hardly use that so that doesn't count. So, ahem, just seven.

I picked up a quality padded laptop backpack in a charity shop for £5. I think it was a promotional thing as it had a box of decent quality gel pens inside that were branded with the same name, too. Always worth checking out charity shops as you never know what you'll find. Actually, strictly speaking that is not true - you will always find that horrible smell of care home/air-freshener/disinfectant/death

Also Skoda. My Yeti had to have some work done. And, yes, performance and fuel economy went down the tubes afterwards. Did it teach me a lesson? Nope - I've now got a VW T-Roc.

I would imagine there is no empirical answer to this as everyone is going to have a different left hand. For me, finding my optimum neck was simply as case of play as many basses as you can, usually bought and sold on at a huge loss, until you discover what it is about the bass neck you like. It could be the cross section as you have illustrated. It could be the width of the neck at the nut. It could be how close together the strings are. All in conjunction with how far apart the strings are at the bridge. But I found I had to live with a bass for some time before making a firm decision on it - just trying one in a shop didn't help. For years I was convinced I preferred narrow necked basses and anything more than 40mm at the nut was a struggle. Then necessity forced me to play 5 string basses - much wider than 40mm - and discovered that the width of the neck had nothing to do with it, string spacing was the key factor. It just so happened that narrow necks had tight string spacing. So I can happily play my 5er with a 45mm wide neck but still struggle with a 43mm wide 4 string P bass. Actually struggle is the wrong word - just feels less comfortable.

String spacing at the bridge is always tight on these, not so much the nut. I've had a lot of the variants of these - the B Bass, Jack, various body-less B2 derivatives. All be cracking basses. A 5 string Jack would be interesting - anyone ever seen one?

On Monday last week I saw Caro Emerald at the Cliff's Pavilion in Westcliff. Very enjoyable show. New tunes sound just like the old ones but that's ok. Thursday last week I saw Level 42 at the Royal Albert Hall. Fabulous gig. I've been going to L42 gigs since they started and they play as well now as they ever have. Their lighting is always fantastic but they did one of the simplest yet most effective things I have ever seen. On each of the 4 corners of the stage and hung centrally were disco mirror balls. In 'Starchild' they cut most of the lights except for the beams falling on these mirror balls and the entire auditorium of the RAH was covered in moving stars. You could almost hear the collective gasp. I'd seen them a couple of weeks before, also at the Cliff's Pavilion, and the effect was good but not as awe inspiring as when it illuminated that huge dome. They played some older stuff, including the uber Jazz funk Mr Pink.

Liking the look of that Boss WL50 - just ordered one, in fact. I currently use the Line 6 G50 - which works absolutely perfectly - but the compactness of the WL50 look very appealing. So, thank you Basschat for seeing off more of my hard earned 😄

That's it, completely, in a nutshell.

As a young lad I was transfixed by the effect he had on girls - that cheeky lopsided grin and big eyes. I just wanted to be like him. Which, given that I strongly resemble the cactus in my avatar, was always going to be a big ask. But he was the epitome of cool back then.

The only thing puzzling me in that picture is how the battery compartment lid has managed to remain attached! 😄

I use one of these, too. Very quick. Spots a low B quickly - some I have tried don't.
