1. Emailed him, got a quick and very friendly response thanking me profusely for buying the bass and apologising that unfortunately all the signed neckplates are now gone. Apparently each country's dealer got a random selection of V7s with the signed plates. Ah well. Worth a try and it was good of him to reply so quickly.
2. Dave, who did you contact at Sire? I'd really like to try and blag a signed neckplate for mine but I don't know who to ask.
3. Bilbo's not in a tribute band, but I'm fairly sure he wants to be...
4. Ok, a quick measure reveals that unfortunately the screw centres on the V7's tuners are totally different to the Schaller machines.
5.
Does anyone know if Schaller tuners are a direct replacement for the stock ones? Do the screw holes line-up?
I'll check later and report back. I presume we're talking Schaller BM tuners? 6.
Stevie Nicks sounds like a very old and tired goat with laryngitis being molested in a cupboard
Fixed.
7. I can also recommend the quad-coil Delanos. They are brilliant for coil-tapping.
8. Many many years ago a mate and I briefly considered joining a fledgling Eagles tribute band (fledgling... Eagles... geddit??!?!!??!?!!?). Our decision not to was based in large part on our realising just how many Eagles tribs are already doing the rounds. AFAIK the project never got off the ground.
9. I tried that. Told myself over and over again. Fail.
10. I've sworn that I will never use a rehearsal room again. Too many shysters and grotty holes around for my liking. These days we rehearse in a nice village hall. Lots of tea and coffee ("you need to bring your own biscuits though"...) available in the kitchen, working heating, scrupulously clean bogs, and nowhere near 30 quid a night. Yes we have to take our own gear but in these days of lightweight kit it's not a big deal.
11. Iwas totally GAS-free, until I heard the awesome sound of my mate's Modulus 5 through his GK neo rig the other night. Now I'm not so sure...
12. First thing I'd check is the jack socket. An active bass I had many moons ago developed a fault unbeknown to me, whereby the two rings became shorted together -- it still worked and played ok, as the tip was unaffected, but it meant that the circuit remained live even when the lead was pulled. Consequently it ate batteries, much like yours.
13.
Sailing By...
Oh yes. I always listen out for the howling bass-fail at 1:54.
14. Radio 4. There's something really soothing about the Shipping Forecast and the coastal station reports.
15. I'd fill and re-drill the screwholes for the bridge. After asking for a partial refund of course
16. It's true that the Sire headstock shape is a bit gumby, and the length is potentially problematic. A couple of schoolboy errors really that could have been averted. But the rest of it is so superb, I can gladly look past them. Good as the Squiers I've played were, this thing really is in a different league.
17. Another excellent review I think we need a Jazz shootout. Fender vs Squier vs Sire ash vs Sire alder vs Lakky vs anything else I have forgotten. This needs to happen.
18. Cool. I've got the ash, you have the alder. When shall we do it?
19. Oh, knickers to the lot of yez Yes I expect mine are nickels too, I just assumed that they were D'Add steels and didn't bother checking the hanging dooflip. I am a tit. I'll probably change them for my favoured Rotos anyway.
20. Heh, barely Ok, herewith some quick thoughts. Pics will have to wait till the weekend. First impressions, oh boy it’s pretty. Even Mrs Dog said "Ooh that's lovely, much better looking than your others". Lovely sunburst with a nice grain showing through, looks like a 1 piece body although I doubt it somehow, but they’ve done a great job of hiding the join. Nice quality pearly creamy pickguard, and the neck is gorgeous -- the bound maple fingerboard has flawless pearl block inlays (Mrs Dog: "I like those") and all in a high gloss. I don’t normally like high gloss necks but this one feels good -- let’s see if I change my mind after a few sweaty gigs! It tips the scales at a gnat's over 10lbs, so it’s heavier than my J and my Yam 5 but lighter than my bitsa P -- again we’ll see how I get on with that. As some have said, it’s quite long -- about ¼” longer than both my Fender style 4 strings so it’s a very tight squeeze getting it into my gig bag, but it does eventually fit. Balances well on a strap, no neck dive. The set-up is quite low at the moment, and it does need a tweak – I don’t mind a bit of fret buzz, in fact I quite like it as it adds a bit of grind to the sound, but this one has a bit too much. The D’Addario steels are nice, although I'm more of a nickel man so I think I'll be investing in some Roto nickels before too long. And the sound. Oh my word. The sound. It is fabulous. (Mrs Dog: "Oh yes, that sounds good. Do some of that slappy stuff...") The eq is really flexible, the bass and treble both have a wide sweep (I've never worked out why people make their eqs this way, turning either of the controls up further than halfway makes the sound totally unusable) but judicious use pays out in spades. The sweepable mid is a great addition, giving a vast array of tonal possibilities. The quintessential Marcus sound is very easy to find, quel surprise -- I suspect he may have had quite a hand in the design of this eq, not surprising given that his name is on the bass (and it’s quite a nice understated logo too, a classy font) -- and it has the best solo bridge pickup sound I’ve ever heard on a Jazz style bass: the eq means that you can throw in enough bottom & low mid for it not to wimp out. And as if all that eq power wasn’t enough, the excellent passive tone control operates with or without the active controls. So not ony can you can bypass the actives completely for a pure passive sound should you so desire (or if the batteries pack up!), but you can use it as a further colour to the active tonal palette. All the reviews are right. This blows into the weeds every Jazz I’ve ever tried, including Fenders costing three times as much and even a Marcus Miller signature. I even prefer it to the Lakland Darryl Jones sig, which up until now was easily my favourite Jazz style 5er. As discreet said, this really is a game-changer. This kicks the living daylights out of everything in its price bracket, and much of the stuff above it: you'd have to spend an absolute shitload of cash to get something better, IMO. Fender/Squier, sit up and take notice –- there's a new kid in the playground, and he's just stolen all your dinner money.
21. It's here! It's arrived! And. Oh my god. Pics and thoughts later when I manage to actually put it down
22. The knob height is something I'm going to try to address, as is neatening the wiring (judging by the pics, it could do with it). I'm a bit anal like that
