1. A deal well done with Lee - splendid chap (from many years ago). We'll do it again sometime.
2. Maybe the word valid was inappropriate - I should have said 'stood the test of time'. You don't see many of the other guy's basses on E-bay
3.
So one day, my mate phones them from round the corner. Same answer as usual. So he walks straight in and asks for it back. No guitar, it was clearly sold months before.
Nah, I reckon just as he was coming round the corner a guy dashed in and bought it and then went round the other corner just as your mate arrived at the shop. A. P. - honest as the day is long (only lasts 24 hours, doesn't it?)
4.
And as Protium has said Paul Tutmark made the first bass guitar. It might not have been the commercial success that the Fender was but there is no question that his concept was similar and it came first. However, I believe that the development of the bass guitar was inevitable. If Fender hadn't made the first well-marketed one someone else would have done. Probably not Gibson, but how about Rickenbacker or Mosrite, or someone like Tutmark with a brilliant idea working in isolation?
Well I met the man - June 1979 - and he himself said he would never claim to be a genius or that (as other people have said) he changed the face of rock music in the 50s and 60s. Only that he was lucky enough to be the first to have his instruments accepted by so many musicians back then. As you rightly say if someone else had come up with the first production line bass guitar his own theory was that it's sound would have become the accepted norm. That's how modest the guy was. As far as modern exotic basses go we are so lucky to have so many excellent luthiers around (Leo never claimed to be a luthier as such) but if you ask the present master craftsmen how they themselves regard Leo Fender I think you'll find they will pay appropriate homage. I don't have stats to hand to prove it but I reckon the 3 most popular basses in the world are the Precision, Jazz and Musicman - and very probably always will be.
5.
Paul Tutmarc in fact Never the less happy birthday Mr. Fender
No I don't believe Paul Tutmarc designed the first electric bass guitar that is still valid today - that's what I meant.
6.
happy birthday leo
Err -except he died 23/3/1991 - can you wish someone a posthumus happy birthday? OK I think they can get basschat 'up there'.
7. Clarence Leo Fender - born 10/8/1909. Even non-Fender lovers must acknowledge whatever they like today can only have been designed FROM something Leo created. Somebody had to be first.
8. I see from the pic that you've got the type of bridge that allows a choice of string position - just slacken off the offending string a little and 'click' it accross till it lines up. Near enough is OK - most double pole pickups work fine as long as the string is within the magnetic field.
9. Sunday 9th - WoT at the Magnesia Bank you say. Not to mention the Stax Brothers on Friday 28th. (I told you not to mention it).
10. Fender's vintage fretwire is to early 60s specs - quite thin - 70s should be wider. Maybe their 'standard' size would be more appropriate.
11.
Can you put up a pic of the Schaller 3d bridge? Ta muchly
OK - it'll be later on this evening though - in the meantime you could view online with any one of the suppliers and be rest assured it's in good nick.

13. A-ha! We now know that Marcus is not leaving the music game altogether....... ('We now know that Marcus is not leaving the music game') [a la Leslie Nielson] Here's an extract from last night's Newcastle Evening Chronicle - entertainments page----check out Monday night at Saltwell Social Club.
14. Judging by the underneath view and the colouring of the wires I would say they are from a Mex. Fender Jazz. They certainly look the same type fitted to such basses but if you got them as spares in the boxes shown they may have simply been sold as the same kind as an oriental maker would have supplied to the Mex. Fender people (I don't believe the pickups themselves are Mex. made)
15. If we all form a line to post our respective wailings about Marcus taking time out, this thread will last till he comes back.....see?
16. Hi there - I'm based in Throckley - west of Newcastle if you can make it. If transport is a problem we could meet up in the city centre. I'm sure I could sort the action out for you. Let me know if you want my number by PM. Bass Doc (forty years of fiddling with Fenders)
17. PM'd with Harley's details. H.
18. Can't see anything wrong with your proposal - do it and let us all know if you're happy with the outcome.
19. Just completed a deal with JimBob on an EMG pickup - very smooth transaction and great communication. Altogether a splendid chap. H.
20.
Made you an avatar: That'll cheer you up every time you log on. J.
Nice idea but you don't quite get the sense of scale in the same way as the original. I would suggest downloading the full picture and framing a copy to place in an area easily seen when coming through the front door - that way you'll always come home in a good mood.
21. I've used lighter fuel to good effect in the past - if that doesn't work go back to the thread containing the Jimmy Cranky sized singer and have a good laugh.
22. Rotosound do RS 55s in extra long scale - maybe a special order job but they do exist.
23. This is weird - it could well be that someone else did what I did way back then. I wish I had kept a pic. of my version at the time.
24. Answering the request for a pic of the (almost mythical) Vox Symphonic bass here's the well butchered example I referred to. You have to use some imagination and blot out the routs for Kahler trem, J pickup and bass half P pickup and then you will see where the two Vox pickups would be (still showing signs of the original sunburst finish). I tend to think now that the Prick is a custom body as it does not show signs of scratchplate holes which would be present on the Vox.
