2. Yes, nut idea is the same as the washer(s) trick mentioned above. I just had to try very hard to not use the words 'ball-end' and 'nuts' in the same sentence.
3. Presumably you've tried washers on the ball-end of the string? (pleased I spelt ball-end correctly). I use the same set-up on my '63 and don't seem to have a problem but then again I get a nose bleed if I venture up past the 7th fret on the E string. As has been mentioned, try not to take too much notice of an electronic tuner and if the intonation is really 'far out' out, just call it jazz.
4. In my neck of the woods we tend to do 'backhanded' compliments. Fellow bass player to me on leaving the stage:- "I thought you played very well............. ...but I was wrong".
5.
You are Billy Sheehan,i claim my £5.
I think I did it first - may have to sue Billy for copying the idea. I still think you're worth the fiver though. I can't pay you in cash but, next time you're down this way, I can supply £5 worth of gentleman's literature.
6. Late to the show on this one. Non-identical twins:- On the left a genuine 1962 Jazz with Gibson EBO pickup added. On the right an early 70's custom built repro with Mighty Mite ebony fretless neck. Apologies to the purist/collector types for the 1962 but it was done in 1969 when the bass cost £45.00! 7.
Honest mistake. Many a slip. Smoke without fire. More in sorrow than in anger. Disproportionate response. Dead men tell no tales. At the end of the day. Let sleeping dogs lie. If you get my meaning.
"And when in Rome, do unto others..... and all who sail in her". Well said.
8.
Yes. And magnificently. On every continent, women of all ages have turned to me in post-coital languor and murmured "That was unbelievable. But you're not a patch on Howard The Bass Dog."
Even though I'm ancient I still get comments from young ladies at gigs. I am often compared to Hollwood hearthrobs. Just the other night one came up to me and said "You know, you don't look anything like George Clooney".
9. Married twice, and met both through gigging. Been with present Mrs. BD for 15 years and she's 26 years younger than me
10. I always quite liked the ones Aria did for him.
11. There doesn't seem to be a distinct time when rounds 'took hold'. There must have been a fair cross-over period because my 1978 Musicman Stingray came with factory fitted flat-wounds. Also my 1976 Bi-centenial Thunderbird had flats from new (orange silks! - still got'em) so rounds didn't particularly rule yet (then).
12. When I'm due some money I much prefer it be Johnny Cash rather than Jeff Beck. (sometimes the bass player is just going R.R. rather than R5).
13.
BC comprises a cross-section of people
Agreed - some people get cross very easily and some should be sectioned.
14.
As I suspected Howard, thanks. What do you do when the winding at the bridge end sits badly on the saddle, my E string really doesn't look at all comfortable on the old-style bridge (fine in the new one) and has the tendency to rattle when I give it some?
If this is a problem in respect of the 'rough' part of the winding sitting on the saddle, it's a good idea to put some washers ahead of the ball end (that's ball end) so that the smooth part of the string starts just behind the saddle.
15.
Are the Jamersons the same as '1954 Oldie Original' Deep Talkin' Bass? Mine are Blue Silks, 52,73,95,110, 0760M.
1954 Oldies are indeed the same strings as 0760M guage 52 to 110.
16.
Do the Jamerson have blue at both ends or just the tuner end Doc, I have a 'mystery set' here
Just the tuner end, at the bridge end they are naked.
17. Red silks for the 760FLs and blue for the Jamersons.
18.
I know a body on which that neck would look very nice Doc
Me too!!!
19.
I asked if it had a flame top.
Nah, it's ash.
20. Bonjour, Do you 'ave a leesonns for your minkey?
21. Congratulations on a splendid conversion.......I especially like the custom made pickguard (but then I wood, wooden eye).
22.
Cool, amazing that Leo got it so right, so early in the development of the electric bass! Roughly 50 years of technological advances later and IMHO you still can't beat a good P bass pickup sound
Especially when you've got a genuine '63 tip on your scratchplate.
23. I've never carried a back-up bass - only a set of strings. Mind you, I have been known to turn up to a gig without my bass, so a back-up would have been useful.
24. I tend to quote my own fee as £1.00 per correct note played on the night. Sometimes I get a fiver! But seriously, in this neck of the woods £200.00 for a band would be usual (normal pub style gigs), more for functions obviously.
