  1. And what are lessons going to do? Maybe, correct the mistakes and short comings in your technique?
  2. Until you start using some of this modern gear that clearly replicates every bodge you've been getting away with for years!
  3. I'd guess that knowing theory and having a good technique will make you a better player than you would have been without it, but I didn't say only guys with good knowledge and technique would be better players. My heroes are John McVie and Duck Dunn. I probably know more theory than both of them put together, but they are way better players than I'll ever be.
  4. Another piece of trivia. . . . the bass line on I Can't Go For That inspired Michael Jackson when he recorded Billie Jean.
  5. If you're comparing cabs etc play the same piece through each cab. IMO in a real world test you need a bass player. When we did this at the SE Bass Bash Lozz196 played the same lines through each cab and amp in the shoot out.
  6. He sold the format on to another company who made some shows in a studio on a set made up to look like DH's place. It looked lame.
  7. There certainly is a "correct" way to play most instruments, but this is Rock and Roll so "correct" doesn't always mean much or sound best. On the other hand, the guys who know music theory and have learnt a good technique will always be better players, think James Jamerson, Nathan East etc. PS one finger per fret is not as good a technique at the low end of the neck, as you found out. 1,2,4 is much better.
  8. Love it. We used to do this version in the cover band. The rest of DH is well worth checking out. He's just about 70 here! Pretty good performances from an "old guy" and it's a great concept. The only one I didn't like was the Keb Mo session. I don't think they got the groove right on that one, but the rest is several days or weeks of Youtube surfing with some quality musicians and some great live music.
  9. Speakons come from the PA industry where power amps of thousands of watts, long cable runs and many feet and gear movements always posed a threat. The bass world is totally different. Very short cable runs in inaccessible places and significantly lower power requirements means that jack plugs can still be an option. Using jack plugs didn't bother the good people at Ampeg when they designed the powerful 300 watt SVT or the guys at Mesa when they designed the 400 and 400+. Use speakons, why not? But don't demonize jack plugs. They work just as well for bass players and with negligible risk.
  10. Even a gorilla couldn't bend the gauge of strings I use.
  11. The other surprising thing (or maybe not) is how easy some people can decide that a musicians career should be over for no other reason than they don't like them anymore!
  12. You can cable from amp to cab to cab or amp directly to both cabs. Same difference.
  13. Unfortunately Alan Spenner didn't. He was one of the best bassists I saw on a stage, in the early days of Kokomo.
  14. My laptop is grinding to a halt on a regular basis, even when I'm only running Basschat. I use Firefox, so I'd also be interested in any answers or ideas.
  15. This is one of the best rhythm sections of all time. I used to see the original band in the pubs and clubs, so I'd happily watch them with any front line.
  16. According to various films and interviews he's been a royal PIA for many years. I'm surprised to hear he was still part of the band.
  17. Yeah. I don't find it's too bad, but I have to zone out the noise on mine as well.
  18. No but my interest is in trying to sound better. IMO if you can sound this good playing at home why settle for anything less.
  19. The best low volume amp and cab I use for playing at home is my regular Aguilar TH500 and a Barefaced One10. If I add the second One10 the sound is wonderful.
  20. Makes more sense than Paul Rogers in Queen and that line up did quite well.
  21. What style of band are you in? What gear do you currently play? What are you trying to achieve with this change?
  22. I've used 2 One10's together and, to my ears, they sound much better than the One10 on its own. I only play a 5 string bass but this was with an AG700 as well.
  23. OK, I'll be the grumpy one. . . . you guys shouldn't be looking at your fingers when you're playing!!!!
  24. I've had all of those and a lot more over the years. The flawed personality type who is drawn to play in a band seems to have existed forever. Mozart probably had guys like this in his orchestra. If you can't change them or fire them learn how to deal with them. I'll endure almost anything if the gig is good. I've played with the mildly eccentric to the outright criminally insane, but I've met more good guys and they make up for it all.
  25. I'm struggling to contain and tame a singer at the moment. We're running through songs and he'll do two of this and one of that, then the next rehearsal it's the other way around. I'm vainly trying to get him to play the agreed arrangement, every time. Apparently it's OK for him to change at will but the rest of us have to play our parts exactly and keep up with him. We're rehearsing for a gig at the end of next week and then that will probably be the end. Some people are just too selfish to be in a band.
