Hi - I'm having a clearout at the mo so I've decided to move on my pair of Yamaha BEX-4 basses. If you're not familiar with them, they are 34" scale single cutaway semis (with a Gibson-style central block) & the electrics are a combination of magnetic soapbar + piezo pickups with an active 3 band EQ, giving you a pretty broad scope tone-wise. Controls on the body are volume & magnetic/piezo mix, with the EQ on the top like you'd find on an electro-acoustic guitar. Orange one now sold... The second one is in blueburst & needs a bit of work. It was defretted a while ago, but it's since had a refret (both jobs by a professional bass tech). It plays fine (out of the two it's my favourite to play as the neck's a bit thinner & the body's lighter), but there's an occasional problem with the electrics - the pickup blend occasionally cuts out, but comes back with a wiggle of the pot. Probably nothing too major if you're handy with a soldering iron - I'm not though! It's currently strung with old roundwound strings, but I'll throw in a set of D'Addario Chromes (40-100 - cut to fit) with this one. I don't have a case for it. I'm looking for £125 posted on this one. More info: - Yamaha Spec Harmony Central Reviews Give me a shout if you want any more pics or info... Cheers, B. ____________________________ [s]The first one is a Gretsch-style flamed Orange finish. It has a really comfy action - it had a pro set up when I bought it & it's currently strung with Thomastik Flats, giving it a warm rootsy tone. There are a couple of dings on the back & the edge of the rosewood bridge snapped off between the E & A strings. It's been glued back on & the break is purely cosmetic - it doesn't cause any issues as under the rosewood there's a metal frame that the strings are anchored into & it isn't visible from the front unless you're really close up (see pics). I have a hard case for this so it can be posted. I'll throw in a spare set of Thomastik flats (cut to fit the bass) too. I'm after £200 posted for this one.[/s]

Hi - been browsing to see what bass parts are knocking around for sale & I was wondering if it might help to find stuff if parts were in a separate section of the marketplace rather than alongside guitars/keyboards etc. in the 'Other musically related stuff' section. Just wondered what everyone else thought? B.

Brilliant and other positive noises.
Thanks for the kind words Luke - hope you enjoy it! And thanks to everyone elcse for all the other feedback - didn't spot it when it was written - cheers! B.

Hi - thanks for the help. Decided to take a punt on a cheap plate off eBay over the weekend, so will see how that goes. Gone off the idea of the thumbrest - after trying it blutacked on for about five minutes yesterday I realised that it might be a bad move... Cheers, B.

Hi - just bought a great Squier Classic Vibe Jazz from the forum, but I'm thinking of changing the stock scratchplate. I'm not sure whether a standard spare will fit - looks like it will, but I was wondering if anyone has done this & has any advice on a good one to go for please? Also, I'm thinking I might like to have a '70s-style thumb rest above the strings (had a Fender years ago that was nicked & I loved it). I've found a few '70s scratchplates online with pre-cut holes, but not sure if everything will line up on the Squier, as it's derived from a '62 Jazz. Can anyone help please? Cheers, B.

Bought a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz from Moos3h & he's a brilliant guy to deal with - great communication, expert packaging & very swift to deliver once the funds had cleared. Thanks again for a very smooth deal - cheers! B.

Sold my Dano '63 to Luke (with a bit of help from his mate Tom who lives near me). Nice guy to deal with - great communication & everything went smoothly. Cheers! B.

If he's put the bass on Gumtree & then pulled it, I would contact Gumtree straight away & let them know what's going on. At the very least, they may give you proper confirmation that the advert was placed, which could prove useful if you take things further through the small claims court... I think this is the link you need: - http://www.gumtree.com/cgi-bin/help.pl?i=77 B.
Morning all, sorry have not been well so have just got to this. I'm happy for the moderators to make a ruling here, but as jxl contacted with questions waiting to be answered, but bentdice is happy as is and posted to say so, then I'm not really sure who to sell to! Technically, jxl was first? Can anyone advise? Don't want to upset anyone! Cheers, James
Don't think anyone needs to get upset. It's a bit of a tricky one, but to keep things sweet I'm happy to stand aside & for you to sell it to jxl. If anyone knows of another one going (or for that matter a 4 string Status Groove Bass - been looking for one of those for ages!) then drop me a PM... Cheers, B. -

Hi - bought a Danelectro 63 Long Scale bass a couple of weeks ago for a project that's not worked out & I need some space in the house, so I thought I'd move it on. Styling's definitely a love/hate thing - it's a black semi hollow ply/masonite body that has the advantage of being VERY light (great if you have a bad back) & a 24-fret neck with a very slight taper (like a Rick). It's passive, with a couple of lipstick pickups & Vol/Tone/3 way switch. I've been pretty surprised by this thing to be honest - it's basic, but with a bit of amp tweaking can go from '60s boom to Lemmy-style chordal madness. Some Dano stuff can be a bit rough straight out of the box, but I had this one set up & strung with D'Addario Chrome flats (40-100) so it's pretty comfy to play. I've only used it in the house since it arrived, so condition is pretty much as new & I'll throw in a Ritter gig bag too. The whole thing cost me just under £250 with strings/set up etc., so I was thinking somewhere around £140 would be a decent deal. Camera's out of action at the mo, so here's a stock pic: - There's also a video review at http://www.danguitars.com/BassGuitars.html (scroll down near the bottom of the page). Dropped price to £175 with the case. The action's very playable as it is and it's only a couple of notes up the top end that buzz, so at this price it's a bit of a bargain if jazzers are your thing. To be honest, I'd get it set up & keep it if I still played guitar, but I'd prefer to find it a home where it'll see a bit more use than it's getting here... Cheers, B.

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
Maybe they're limiting the market to keep the new prices artificially high? The thing that doesn't surprise me any more is the amount of high profile indie bands that have Rickenbacker endorsements; there's loads of the f***ers using them.

+1 I'm building up a healthy dislike of Ricks after looking for one for under a grand for over a year. There is just no way I would consider spending more than that on a bass especially when you consider what else you can get for that money. Just a pity that I'm playing Lemmy basslines though !!!

Stylish though
This is the problem with Rickenbacker - the likes of Lemmy & late '70s post punk players (where a lot of current indie styling is coming from) would have bought their Ricks when they were seen as a decent workhorse bass in competition with Fender. The Fender US standard series are now around £900 new, but a new 4003 is nearly twice that & I can't see how they can justify the price tag. They are beautiful instruments, but the company are riding the wave of trendiness while strangling supply, to the point that players are losing interest. Not a good long term strategy... The thing I don't understand is why the company haven't gone down the licenced quality copy road - they'd clean up! -
So are you saying that they are underpriced rather than overrated?
I'm saying that they are overpriced and, in terms of value for money, totally overrated. -

I've just discovered this thread & was really surprised that Rickenbackers haven't had as much of a slagging as they have. It's not that their basses are bad (although it's definitely a Marmite love/hate thing), it's difficult to understand whether they are good enough to justify the price. A standard build 4003 currently retails for around £1,699 & there's a waiting list of up to 12 months to get one if you can't find a shop that hasn't coincidentally ordered the one you want on spec a year in advance. I just don't get it... On the other hand, if you try to sell something vaguely resembling a Rick on eBay they'll be on to you faster than a burning whippet - they need to spend less time on the internet protecting their patents & more time on the factory floor doing some graft if you ask me!
Hi Bentdice and welcome Clearly you know how to make a proper introduction. Classy yet edgy influences, charming modesty, the promise of interesting gear to shift and a shower of (entirely undeserved) compliments.
Cheers - it did take me a few months to get round to it though! B.

Hi - been a member of Basschat for a while, but haven't actually introduced myself yet, so figured it was about time! I'm thirtysomething & live up north in Newcastle. Been playing bass for ages, but primarily due to spare time I'm not in a band or anything at present - just do stuff in the house with the laptop at the mo. Picked up bass due to players like Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Mani (Stone Roses), Jah Wobble (PiL) - I've always appreciated players who aren't necessarily technically perfect (like me!), but have a strong identity. Love how a simple bassline can make a tune. Currently play a couple of Yamaha BEX-4 semi-acoustic basses. Having a bit of a clear out at the mo & might be moving an orange one of these on in a couple of weeks. Also have a Washburn jazz guitar up for sale/trade here in the market place. This site's great - a very friendly & informed bunch of people. Glad I stumbled across it... Cheers, B.
