Trust me, I don't own a Rolex. I think it was just pressing on the tendons slightly, and as I am still getting the hang of things any slight problem is a bigger one.

Simple question, do you take off your watch to play bass? I was struggling with some fretting a couple of weeks ago, and my tutor suggested I take my watch off. I'm right handed so wear a watch on the left wrist as traditional. It's not on tight at all, and I couldn't feel it restricting movement , but I was surprised to find that removing it did seem to make a difference. So now I take off my watch to play, What are anyone else's experiences?

Hello and welcome! I started last year, aged 51, At this rate we'll be starting an "over 50's learners" sub- forum 🤣 Best advice, play every day. Even if it's only a few minutes noodling. It takes a long time to build muscle memory, and you lose it quickly. Two weeks of not playing due to work/life/tiredness sets you back two months. Or it least it does me ☹ Lots of friendly folks here though, join in.

I like that version. And as others have said, you apply the appropriate adjectives. I am an amateur, unskilled musician. 👍

I commute to work on a bike, so I am definitely a cyclist. My colleagues dash around for miles at lunchtime, which makes them runners and nutters. I'm not a musician, I'm a chap learning to play bass. The friend at church, sadly deceased, who gave me the confidence to learn and started teaching me earned a living as a welder but was emphatically a musician. Another friend was a fantastic player, but hasn't picked up his bass in ten years now. I think there is something to do with skill level and regularity of activity in all the definitions. But thankfully it's very fuzzy. (And I know what some people who live abroad and earn their living remotely do for a living - I employ a few of them. And, no, it's not very interesting to explain to others 😁 )

In that case it will just have to wait.

Do you by any chance have notes or tab you could share for that? I'm not ready to play anything live, other than root notes of the chord sequence of simple stuff, but I love that song. And almost anything by The Move in fact. 😁

I don't actually like this song, or Muse especially*, but my bass tutor gave it me as a practice exercise. It's taken a while just to get a properly comfortable hand position, and the stretch from F to C and the little riff was quite hard and a good test.. Just about sorted now, except need to speed up. *Before the Muse mafia come round I will say that I have seen them live twice and they were fantastic on both occasions. Just a bit shouty listen to on record 🙂

I still like physical copies even if most of the time I rip them to mp3.

Just seen this topic.I won't join in, because I don't currently even own an amp and that is something I'll buy this year. But by coincidence I did say to the missus earlier today that I wasn't going to buy any more CDs until I have listed to the whole lot though again. That I suspect will take me through into 2021!

Evening all, Having lurked around and read BassChat off and on since March I thought I ought to say hello properly. I'm another late-learner, I started to play in March last year, having vaguely wanted to since University days. Now I'm "north of forty", and intend to stay at that age indefinitely. A friend lent me his travel bass when I said I was interested in learning, and I got hooked very quickly: I picked up a used Brawley KB24 Artemis about two weeks later, much to the wife's surprise. I really like it, and players I respect tell me it's an excellent instrument. In other people's hands it does sound good, but I can still make a noise like a cat falling downstairs carrying a tray of spanners! I don't get to practice anywhere near enough, but am getting better. I'd like to be at the midlands bash, but just realised it's the bank holiday weekend. Will have to see if it's possible.
