1. Burn is a classic. I'd personally go for Lay Down, Stay Down or Dealer. But TBH, it would be everything Mark 3 and 4. That's Purple for me. Much prefer that time to Mark 2.
2. Not for me I'm afraid - but if it sounds good, that's what matters!
3. Wonder if they do 'Fly By Night' by Rush?
4. I hope I didn't come across like a know-it-all on my previous post! Great band whoever was in it!
5. It's always been what NG has done, don't think it's an attention thing. He's made some great quotes over the years - I personally find him entertaining. Sweeping? Often, and probably. Winds people up? Almost certainly!
6. I'm not a fan of NG's music in the slightest - but I always enjoy his interviews. Love him or hate him, at least his says what he thinks, and provokes opinion. Like the previous 2 pages!
7. Failed guitarist..... ......**runs and hides in a very dark place**
8.
An amazing band. John McLaughlin just plays the most amazing guitar on this track.. Its so Billy Cobham on the busy drums, The legendary Tony Levin on bass, Jan Hammer (i think) on acoustic piano. Over the top for most, but the musicians involved are at the top of there game. This music can change like nothing else.
Can I please add that on this track (and the album), it's Narada Michael Walden on drums and Ralphe Armstrong on bass. Gayle Moran is on keys. Superb album, the penultimate of the original MO records. I love the MO, and John Mclaughlin's solo work too. What a career! Raphe Armstrong is a superb player as well. Not a name you see very often, but well worth checking out. His work on the last of the 3 MO records alone would be enough for legendary status!
9. Big problem I find is that many pubs will only book the same old, same old. Anything different is often greeted by 'the regulars didn't like it. It seems some places pander to the rule of diminishing returns, like the places is being run like an exclusive little club. There's a pub around here that will seemingly only ever book classic rock covers. Even our old-skool R'n'B trio was deemed to far from what they want....so heaven help anything from the 21st century!
10. My '74 Ricky had been unloved for about 30 years when I bought it. Pretty much left as the day the owner played the last note. As a result, it had a certain 'character' when I bought it. Some restoration work later, and TBH, up close, I can still get a whiff of the original odour....it's been fully cleaned, and re-sprayed in places too! At least I now know what 1980's indie music actually smelt like......
11. Depressing, I find that I am regularly the youngest person, both in the bands and pubs - and I'm 42! If something doesn't change, the demographic issue will no doubt have serious implications for the industry. Every year I say will be my last playing pubs - I find that with all the issues, it's only the odd gig that's fun, many are simply a chore. I love music and (sometimes) playing, but I find the playing the same circuit of pubs, that decrease every year both in numbers and attendance, will eventually have me giving up.
12. I play my '74 4001 on max. Just push the gain and bass on the amp. Newer 4003s are a different matter, though...
13.
Gregory Porter always seems M.O.R. to me. Is he not, really?
I agree. Massive soul fan here....but I've not been turned onto GP. I'm not sure what it is....but something leaves a little cold, the opposite of soul.
14.
It still amazes me that they can hear how great the likes of Gregory Porter and Rag n Bone Man are but booked Roy wood and Chaka Khan who were both awful (from a totally objective point of view based on how they sound now, not based on the past glories!).
+1. I too though RW's vocals were very iffy indeed on 'See My Baby Jive'. Chaka too. Full marks for the (I think) original key, but it's a modern symptom of acts carrying on like they did 40+ years ago. It pains me to say it, but play by all means, but pass on the vocals. This applies to numerous acts! Geddy's vocals came in for serious criticism over the last 10 (+?) years on Rush tours. Macca too. These guys can still play to perfection, but vocally?
15. Hacker T Dog for me!
16.
Not sure what you mean....
I couldn't breathe watching the clip!
17. What about Chaka Khan? The outfit - it certainly 'gained your attention' if you know what I mean!
18. Gorgeous. One bass I never got around to owing is a Stingray. Can't think why, they look (and sound) amazing. Enjoy!
19. Give Rickenbacker a break - they've only been making and spraying basses for over half a century....! Even as a fan and player, their QC has long been a major problem in my book. I had a fair few 'iffy' 4003's - and they never sounded as I wanted, either. Sole 4001 owner now. Best Ric, and bass, I'll ever have. Neck sticky-ness not a problem, as due to missing paint, it's had a lovely refin!
20. UB40? Which one?!
21. Am I right that he's using a pick in many of the performances? A bit hard to tell. Great player, great band. I was taken to see them aged 11 - and even at that age, they were superb. Big RIP to their drummer Mickey - amazing drummer who died a couple of years ago. Played with them from the beginning until he retired in 2009. I was just starting drumming when I saw them, and he was important in me seeing how a professional fits in.
22. I love Fender flats, best strings I've ever had by a mile.
23. PS4! I've even put it in the cupboard and I'm not going to open it until the 25th...even though I've already paid for it!
24. Shame it's gone - can't say I ever bought any of their publications, although I do read the website daily. I think it is a music press thing in general. I bought the odd Metal Hammer in the 80s as a teen, but in the 90s it was NME, MM, Select, Vox....loads to choose from and buy regularly. One by one they vanished, and I stopped buying the NME in about 2003 as it became, well, a joke if I'm honest. I then became a Q reader and subscriber until earlier this year. Again, the content was becoming more and more forgettable - every issue was a '20 years since....' piece, of which many I remember first time around, and had no desire to read about again! Subscription stopped, and as a lifelong music mag reader, I now only buy Total BMW magazine. I think that sums it up!
25. True! ....and can I also add (Sheena's In Love With) Joey Ramoney by Helen Love! In fact, a whole load of HL tracks reference The Ramones, and other bands as well.
