I'm currently running a 500w head through a 400w cab. Fender head, Markbass cab (a 2x10). Most gigs, neither is being pushed...volume at just over 1/4 most of the time, as it's a trio in pubs most of the time. I'm looking for a slight change with the head, and given what's on offer, and contemplating a 250w head. Anyone out there gigging with one? Guess I'm currently carrying loads more power than necessary...in fact, too much for the cab. The new Marcus Miller heads are very tempting..... I appreciated it's very debatable....headroom and all that....but I'd be interested to hear any insights!

My bass head isnβt quite doing it for me...
spongebob replied to iain_psb's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've read some good stuff about the Tech 21 heads. Got me quite curious, as to if you can really get that extra crunch without running a pre-amp. Usable crunch, rather than flat-out distortion. -
Albums which haven't aged all that well
spongebob replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in General Discussion
Funny how tastes differ - I've been listening to a lot of 80's Rush of late, and stuff like 'Hold Your Fire' and 'Presto' - at the time, I was just getting into them, and didn't care for the 80's clangy-ness of it all. Now, I really like them a lot more - 'Presto', in particular. To me, they've aged well. Better than 'Caress Of Steel' for sure! I used to love the early Manic Street Preachers stuff, until Richey disappeared. However, those first two albums don't sound so great today. The stripped-back nature of 'The Holy Bible' still works. Guess there's a production lesson in there - less maybe is more! π -
I only saw them once - it was about 1991 from memory? 'An Evening Of Yes Music Plus' - and featured pretty much every ex-member (up to that point) on revolving stages. Good show, as far as I recall....although backstage was probably a right old atmosphere! π€£

I'm another unfamiliar with his work. Only things I ever picked up about JB were over on TB, where he had - seemingly a fair bit - had a good old rant/tantrum, and alienated loads of players! I though he was banned from TB for a while? Or stormed off or something?

Congrats on the Markbass 2x10. I bought one after Christmas in the sales...it's a great cab. Used to run a 1x12 and 1x15, now I just use the 2x10 Traveler.

We play old-skool Rhythm and Blues - covers and originals - in the Dr. Feelgood vein. I quit earlier this year, after 6 years, but I've re-joined! Recently helped form a semi-acoustic trio - covers and originals again - very much in the laid-back 'West Coast' vein - first gig with this in a couple of weeks' time.

Because Jamerson was known for his power trios

I'd have thought as a professional, as your job, you'd be doing it exactly for the money! π -
Not sure....it's been a few years since I had the XL's. Definitely less tension than flats, though!

^^^^this. I've got a US Geddy Lee....wanted one for ages, finally got one at a sensible (ish) price. Works for me over a standard US jazz because of the pickups, neck, and bridge. Helps I'm a GL fan, but the bass offers me exactly what I need for my current 2 bands.

I think the quality of the top end sig stuff is pretty near to Custom Shop....seriously well made quality instruments.
-
Not my thing, but good on Fender for producing it. Sure they'll be hordes of Flea aficionados queuing to grab one, many some non-fans too, as with the other sig bass of his. I'm not a Flea fan, but I had one....cracking basses.

May be a little late to the party on these, but I bought a set last week (45-100), and fitted them to my US Geddy Lee Jazz. Wow! They are really excellent. I used to use the standard XL strings for some years, but the last few, I've been using Fender flats. Tried some Fender nickels on the bass, and they just didn't cut it. Did some research.....looked at DR....lots of various materials/compounds, but stumbled across the NYXL's. Fitted them last week, and the bass was transformed. It was great before, but these have made it take off - love the tension, feel, balance, can't fault them at all. They feel really nice of the fingers, quite soft - I'm assuming they'll be kind to the frets as well, feeling like they do! Not the cheapest, but if anyone is considering a set, give them a try. Definitely feel a league above the 'standard' XL....and the packaging is awesome as well! Well done D'addario. You've won me back! π

Thread revival! I'll be on the hunt for a smaller combo in the next few months. Gigging a Markbass 102P Traveler cab/Rumble 500 for the 'power trio' gigs, but I'm now gigging with a semi-acoustic trio - vocals (x2), acoustic guitar, electric bass (me!) I'm assuming that this 2x8 would be sufficient? It's a Sunday PM pub gig band....maybe use it as a practice amp as well? Got the louder set-up for the other band, but was thinking this could be a way of carrying less! π

How nice when you take on a great dep gig.

Boz's 'Lowdown' - worth it for that alone! π -
I'm now listening it for the first time, on the basis of this thread! π

What gear exceeded expectations for you?
spongebob replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in Bass Guitars
Ditto. I had to change to the Rumble 500 head (car change), but it was a seamless transition. Pumping it through a Markbass 2x10 102P Traveller cab, and it's awesome. I'd have another one tomorrow if my one blew, without hesitation. Funny thing, after a recent bass change, I'm now using, on occasion, the bright setting. Just shows after a couple of years, it can still surprise you. -
Great minds and all that! π

I'm not a Londoner, but I visited The Bass Gallery when I was there. Great shop and very nice staff. Sold a bass via commission with them afterwards. Highly recommended.

New Fender MIM Player series replaces Standard
spongebob replied to Gottastopbuyinggear's topic in Bass Guitars
Some of the new finishes look nicer than the the 'Pro' range! I saw one over on TB, a new limited edition MIM that was (I think) Ocean Turquoise/Tort. It looked the dogs' danglies! π -
Bassists you like who aren't your normal cuppa char

I'm not a slap fan at all, but I've always got time for Mark King. Tasty player, bass out front, definitely done a lot for the instrument. Comes across as a nice guy too. -
Quick update - seems to have stuck after all! Well done UHU!

I've got some D'addario NYXL's coming today. Can't report yet, but by all accounts they're billed as a longer lasting round. Going to stick them on a Geddy Jazz, looking forward to getting these on.
