  1. Bacchus... if only they could wipe Brian.
  2. Ahh.... just downloaded the spec for the Uni-Pre and it does have a sweep! I think this is one to consider.
  3. I'd need some top end sparkle but really something to fatten out the rear J coil. I'd love a bit of frequency sweep but I don't think I'm going to get that on a 3-gang harness.
  4. Frisco I can handle for a guitar's brand name, but BRIAN?? Guy at gig: 'Cool bass, mate. What make is it?' You: 'Err....it's a... Brian'.
  5. So, I have this Levinson Blade B4 J-Bass, built in '91. I only play it at home but last year I hired it out and was at the sound-check. It went through an SVT Classic but, amp aside, I was surprised about how Old Skool active it sounded on a stage: it had a very prominent top end and seemed to lack some low end. Adjusting the trim pots made slight differences, usually to the lower mids and sometimes not for the better! The bass was never used in anger at the gig but it got me thinking about upgrading the pre-amp system. Levinson Blade tell me they have not updated that system so I'm going to swap it out for something like the John East Uni-Pre 3. Before I make my mind up, has anyone else got any recommendations? It has to be a three-gang job as there are only volume, blend and boost on the B4. Also, I recall that the Blade has a dummy coil to filter out interference so if I swap the blade circuit out the dummy will become redundant.
  6. They look like props from an old Dr Who series, circa Tom Baker. I'll pass.
  7. Nearly always been because of control freakery by A.N. Other. And, FWIW, I've never been in a band where there was a leader, i.e., the band was his or hers.

Very rare bass. I have the same model. Shouldn't last long on here at that price.
  9. Now, why did I never think of that over the decades?? What a great idea!! Was that your idea of have you seen it elsewhere in the past? Haven't done it for ages as I use Dunlop Steels but I used to pare back the thread with a Stanley blade.
  10. Pedal Steel player looks like a younger version of B.J. Cole, the renowned player.
  11. I thought that his Ibby Rick was black. Did he have an FG one, too? Apparently sold for nearly £2k at auction back in 2016. Wow.
  12. Tried it back in my teens, didn't work for me. Being a fingerpicker acoustic player, I sometimes use that technique on certain bass parts.
  13. 'We made the decision in your absence.' - Those words resulted in my voluntary permanent absence from one particular band.
  14. Never had a problem in the past. Bought a 4001CS, Tom Petty 12 and other expensive stuff from Germany. All good.
  15. A tenor sax player I once played in a band with would sometimes just stop playing his part, letting the alto carry on. He made it look like he didn't have a part to play yet to us, and maybe to the audience, it was obvious that the tenor part was missing. It was the same at rehearsals with him and he put it down to 'drawing a blank'. He's still in the game, very much so, but as a singer and not as a tenor sax player. And, get this: he doesn't forget his words!
  16. Who the eff was this guy? What an impressive musical Messiah complex! Do you still hear word of him?
  17. Vocalists AND guitarists. 8 piece Funk band, two female singers. One would shriek every time she made a fluff/mistake, even when gigging; that drove me insane! Guitarist in same band was a massive Prima Donna who (annoyingly) cultivated a faux-gay persona and went in the huff every ten minutes. Those two quickly became an item and then started travelling separately to out-of-town gigs. Division ensued, becoming an 'Us and Them' camp. They eventually left the band and drifted off into musical oblivion. Then there was the male vocalist who was obsessed with Elvis and used to pull crap, Elvis-style karate moves on stage, often losing his balance when doing so. Totally cringeworthy. At times I was thankful for both my position near the drum riser and the fogger that occasionally hid my disapproving countenance from the punters. Two guitarists in another band became hooked on heroin and consorted with the (serious) underworld figures they were buying it from. They became completely unreliable fast, and were two of the most accomplished fabulists I have ever met! One time, they rocked up hours late for a rehearsal. Their excuse? They had gotten us a gig! In a brothel! I shid you not!! Both eventually succumbed to the demi-monde they had been sucked into and did time; they were also rumoured to be police informants. A shame, for they wrote some good tunes! Female vocalist channeling Janis Joplin. Good Blues shouter who would, out of the blue, make random, disparaging comments onstage about some of our original numbers. Go figure. Female vocalist channeling Stevie Nicks, complete with wardrobe but, thankfully, sans private off-stage tent and substances. A lovely girl with stars in her eyes who couldn't sing for her supper and assured us that 'RCA/Arista/Polydor/Sony are at this gig tonight!' at every gig! Then there are the drummers. But I'm not going there. Yet!
  18. They do look like a set of blades, don't they? The only one I recall making them around that time was Bill Lawrence.
  19. Wow...... never knew either of those things!
  20. Was having a gander at The Fender Telecaster Book this morning and spotted the attached. The photo is of Waylon Jennings' band, circa 1973, and the bassist appears to be sporting a modded stack-pot Jazz. Check the pups......
  21. It's very reminiscent of the Zon Hyperbass which also had extended range 'board. Sure, only a virtuoso would fly over all that range but if that bass up there had 4 strings and didn't have that issue on the neck I'd make the seller an offer.
  22. Yeh. And shame about that fail in the wood. I know it's been repaired but it would still bother me.
  23. Yeh, intrigued. Had a gander on NoTreble basses of the week (going back years) but to no avail.
